Freljord

Leadership in this frozen expanse has never settled on one claimant, and the climate seems to prefer it that way. Sejuani, Fury of the North, leads by riding straight at whatever threatens her people, while Ashe, the Frost Archer, holds her position through patience and a bow that rarely misses. Neither approach has managed to unite the tribes that share this land, and neither shows much sign of trying harder to.

Some of the region’s fighters answer the climate with raw endurance rather than strategy. Olaf, the Berserker, treats a battlefield the way most people treat a warm meal. Tryndamere, the Barbarian King, has survived enough to stop being surprised by any of it. Volibear, the Relentless Storm, and Trundle, the Troll King, are less human answers to the same pressure, each holding territory the old-fashioned way. Braum, called the Heart of the Freljord, is the rarer case: strength used mainly to shield the people around him rather than to win anything for himself.

Beneath the visible tribes, older things are said to move. Three names in particular read closer to myth than to any living ruler:

• Anivia, the Cryophoenix, a being that dies and reforms rather than simply living out a life
• Lissandra, the Ice Witch, whose grip on the region’s oldest magic has outlasted every tribe that has tried to challenge it
• Ornn, the Fire below the Mountain, a forge-god content to stay hidden until someone gives him a reason not to

Braum’s shield and Volibear’s storm answer to no single tribe, which is part of why neither of them has ever been fully claimed by one. That refusal to be owned runs through most of the land’s stranger champions too: something here rewards whoever survives on their own terms rather than whoever swears the right oath first, whether that means outlasting an endless battle or simply outliving every rival who tried to make the claim before you.

Between the tribes fighting for the surface and whatever is holding on underneath it, this frozen expanse has never needed outsiders to make its winters harder.
