OverviewAbout Shurima

Centuries underground do strange things to an empire’s dead — this one refuses to stay buried, and pieces of it keep resurfacing whenever the desert shifts.

Beneath the Sand

The empire’s collapse is old news by now, its capital long since swallowed and its people scattered across the desert that used to be its heartland. Amumu, the Sad Mummy, wanders that same desert as a small, mournful reminder of everything the fall cost, cursed rather than destroyed by it. Renekton, the Butcher of the Sands, and Nasus, the Curator of the Sands, were guardians of the empire’s memory together once, until whatever changed one of them into a monster left the other still trying to hold what’s left together.

What Wakes Beneath It

Azir, the Emperor of the Sands, is the clearest sign the empire never fully ended — a ruler risen back from his own tomb to reclaim a throne that technically stopped existing centuries ago. Xerath, the Magus Ascendant, sought that same kind of power and got a considerably worse result, left as living, furious energy barely holding a shape. Skarner, the Primordial Sovereign, predates the empire’s people entirely, a crystalline guardian whose sleep the empire’s rise and fall barely interrupted.

Not everyone in the desert is waiting on the past. Taliyah, the Stoneweaver, and Sivir, the Battle Mistress, move through the ruins with their own present-day reasons for being there, one still learning what she can do with the ground itself, the other treating ancient tombs mainly as a source of income. K’Sante and Naafiri both belong to the desert’s living cities and warbands rather than its buried ones — proof the empire’s story isn’t only being written by whatever is climbing back out of the sand.

Even the desert’s timekeepers seem uncertain which era they belong to. Zilean, the Chronokeeper, wandered so far into his own study of time that he lost track of which century he was standing in, and now drifts between the empire’s past and its present without fully committing to either. Rammus, the Armordillo, is older than most explanations offered for him, curled and waiting under the sand the way the empire’s other secrets tend to wait. Whether the desert is remembered as a ruin, a warning or a kingdom still owed its throne mostly depends on which of these figures a traveler happens to meet first.
