The Story of Azir
A Reign Cut Short
Long before the desert of Shurima swallowed its own cities, Azir ruled as a mortal emperor at the height of his power, close enough to immortality to almost touch it. That closeness proved fatal: at the very moment of his greatest triumph, he was betrayed and killed, his ambitions ending with him.
Returning from the Sand
Millennia passed before Azir rose again, not as the man he was but as an Ascended being carrying the weight of that old age. His buried capital rose out of the sand alongside him, and with it came a single purpose, rebuilding Shurima into the empire it used to be, this time with a god-warrior at its head rather than a mortal ruler who could be cut down.
Azir’s kit turns that ambition into a battlefield presence built on command rather than direct force. Shurima’s Legacy lets him summon a Disc of the Sun from the wreckage of towers, allied or enemy. Conquering Sands drives every Sand Soldier at his disposal toward a location, slowing and damaging what they pass through. Arise! calls a soldier to fight in his place, extending his attack range through a proxy rather than his own blade. Shifting Sands shields him and hurls him to a soldier’s side, readying a fresh one if it connects with an enemy champion. Emperor’s Divide, his ultimate, raises a wall of soldiers that charges forward and throws enemies back, a defensive tool as much as an offensive one. Other rulers and remnants of old empires, like Nasus, share Shurima’s long shadow, though Azir’s path back to power runs through the throne he never got to keep.
Played today as a hybrid mid-lane or marksman pick, Azir channels Mana into a toolkit built entirely around soldiers rather than his own blade, a style that separates him from peers who share his era of Shurima’s history, including Naafiri and K’Sante, both shaped by the same desert empire in their own ways.
