Long before anyone called him the Chronokeeper, Zilean was an Icathian mage who watched his homeland disappear.

The Fall of Icathia

Zilean once served as a powerful mage in Icathia, a nation swallowed by an incursion of the Void. He never had the chance to properly grieve that catastrophe — the scale of the loss was too immediate and too total — so instead of mourning, he turned to ancient temporal magic, using it to search through every possible outcome that might undo what happened to his people.

A Mind Unstuck From Time

That search left him functionally immortal, adrift between past, present, and future rather than anchored to any single moment. He bends the flow of time around himself constantly, and the goal driving that endless drifting has never changed: finding the one moment that could reverse Icathia’s destruction, a task he has yet to complete after untold years of searching.

Time as a Weapon

On the battlefield, that mastery becomes a support kit built entirely around tempo. His passive, Time In A Bottle, banks experience and lets him grant it to allies, speeding up their growth. Time Bomb sticks to nearby units and detonates after a few seconds, chaining into a second blast if a fresh bomb is placed quickly enough. Rewind shortens his own cooldowns, Time Warp speeds up allies or slows enemies, and Chronoshift — his ultimate — marks an ally with a protective rune that pulls them back from lethal damage.

Playing Against the Clock

Sequencing decides how well that kit performs. Pairing Time Bomb with Rewind lets him stick two bombs to the same target in quick succession, since planting the second detonates the first and stuns everyone nearby, and Time Warp can just as easily speed an ally toward a finishing blow as slow an enemy trying to escape. Chronoshift is a strong deterrent against enemies focusing his carries, though casting it too early can prompt a target switch that wastes the effect. He is fragile once focused directly, which is why a team is generally better off committing to killing him together rather than piecemeal. His story sits within the wider history of Shurima, the buried empire whose ascended warriors are stirring again, alongside figures such as Azir, whose fate is bound to that same region.
