In Gothic 1 Remake, starting as a mage or simply getting a powerful boost early on will be much easier if you find the right mentor. The first NPC willing to teach the hero spells is Torres. He doesn’t give magical training for free, but as a reward for completing a short quest, “The Price of Magic.” The reward is worth the effort—the Nameless One will receive a full rune without any unnecessary hassle. However, this mentor has a habit of changing locations, which often confuses newcomers.

We’ll explore where to find Torres at different stages of the game, how to complete his quest, and which spell to choose—Fire Arrow or Healing.

Where to find Torres in Gothic Remake: all locations

You won’t be able to catch Torres in one place throughout the entire game—the developers have assigned the character a strict schedule. The location directly depends on your progress in the story:

Before completing the quest: Head to the Old Camp. During daylight hours, Torres hangs out in the southern part of the location—look for the trading area and the indoor market.

After completing the quest “The Price of Magic”: The Mentor changes his base and goes to the central fortress of the Old Camp (where the guards are unlikely to let you in at the start of the game). Look for him cruising near the local church.

You can become Torres’ apprentice through a simple process. To start the quest and collect the coveted scroll or rune, follow these steps:

Activate the dialogue. Approach Torres and mention that you have a letter for the Fire Mages. He will immediately show interest and offer a training deal.

Gather resources. The mage will require a standard crafting kit: a piece of parchment and two wolf claws.

Where to get the claws: The easiest way is to visit the merchants in the Old Camp—for example, Mordrag regularly sells the required goods. If you’ve already leveled up your hunting skill, you can go and butcher the wolves yourself, but for a “green” character, this is a questionable and dangerous decision.

Where to find the parchment: Cartographer Andrew will help. His hut is located west of the main northern gate of the Old Camp; the craftsman himself is usually standing by a boiling cauldron.

Complete the quest. Return to Torres with the loot. The cost will be five training points—that’s how much the mage asks for his lessons.

The final chord: Torres gives you a choice of two starting runes, and you add 250 experience points to your account. Incidentally, after this, the character will also begin to function as a full-fledged merchant of magical items, so it’s worth keeping an eye on him.

What should I choose from Torres: Firebolt or Healing?

Before the reward, the game will present you with a classic choice, and if you’re playing Gothic 1 Remake for the first time, take Firebolt. The logic is simple. You can lick your wounds in the early stages with cheap food or standard potions, which are in abundance.

But combat magic is the ultimate weapon in the beginning.

Firebolt deals a solid 35 damage and also inflicts a long-lasting burn on the target. For clearing out the starting monsters, it’s the perfect choice, saving you a ton of nerves.
