November 2026 is actually booked — and not for some kind of indie. It’s about Grand Theft Auto VI. After the June presentation of the State of Play, the industry began to stir: major publishers are massively postponing their blockbusters to September and early October. The players are already joking — the main problem of autumn is not the choice, but the money.

Why publishers are afraid of GTA 6 release in November

The release of GTA 6 is officially scheduled for November 19, 2026. Analysts give a wild forecast: about 40 million copies will be sold in the first few months. This is the historical record level. No other project can withstand the competition in the same period, which is why publishers are panicking.

At the last State of Play, several dates were confirmed at once. Konami releases Silent Hill: Townfall on September 24. Events are moving to Scotland, and for the first time in the series there is a first—person view. The next day, September 25, Capcom returns Onimusha: Way of the Sword. It’s been a while.

It is on October 1 that Ubisoft’s Rayman Legends Retold is released, an updated platformer. A day later, on October 2, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Them will be released. And this is superficial.

GTA 6 sales forecasts and GTA V financial record

Analysts at Morgan Stanley predict that Rockstar Games will be able to sell an insane 40 million copies in the first four months of sales. Does it sound fantastic? However, if we compare this with the historical records of its predecessors, the scale of the disaster for competitors becomes obvious. The previous part, the iconic GTA V, released in September 2013, made 29 million in the first month, and its total circulation exceeded >230 million with a development budget of about ~$265 million. The novelty plays in a completely different league. According to Business Insider estimates, the clean development cost Take-Two between one and one and a half billion dollars. And if we take into account the salary fund of the Rockstar North studio starting in 2019, then the total costs are approaching the 3 billion mark. The head of the corporation, Strauss Zelnik, concisely admits: production turned out to be incredibly expensive.

GTA 5 vs GTA 6

To discourage such investments, the publisher plans to close the 2027 fiscal year with a net income of $ 8-8.2 billion, which exceeds current figures by 20%. DFC Intelligence analysts predict the game will generate about $3.2 billion in revenue in the first year alone, with a billion falling solely from pre-orders. By the way, the combined base of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles will grow to 127 million devices by the end of December 2025. It turns out that Rockstar intends to sell its hit to about 31% of the entire active audience of ninth-generation platforms. Other major releases from previous years grossed noticeably more modestly:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 role-playing action game from Polish studio CD Projekt RED. The game was released in December 2020 with a budget of ~$316 million and sold 13 million copies in the first two weeks, with a total circulation of ~30 million.
  • Fantasy hit Elden Ring from FromSoftware. The project started in February 2022 with a budget of ~$100 million, having issued 12 million units at the start and surpassing the target of >30 million over time.
  • Hogwarts Legacy adventure game from Avalanche / WB. The main bestseller of February 2023 with a budget of ~ $150-200 million sold 12 million copies in two weeks, and the final circulation flew over the mark of >40 million.

How did the State of Play show change the fall calendar?

The official announcement of the release date of Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026 provoked panic among game publishers. The June presentation of the State of Play served as a trigger for mass exodus. Third-party companies began frantically shifting their fall blockbusters to September and early October, trying to stay away from the November typhoon. The competitors simply didn’t have any new hits — everyone preferred to give way. As a result, the beginning of autumn turned into a total mess.

Konami publishing house will roll out the horror Silent Hill: Townfall on September 24, and we are waiting for a first-person view in the surroundings of Scotland. The next day, September 25, Capcom will bring back the legendary action game Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Next, on October 1, Ubisoft releases the Rayman Legends Retold platformer. The long-awaited release of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Them will take place on October 2. Marvel’s Wolverine superhero action game from Insomniac Games has joined this wave, which is storming the shelves on the 15th and pre-orders are already open. This token includes Blood of Dawnwalker, Hell is Us, and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV strategy. The autumn calendar is literally bursting at the seams.

Who postponed the releases due to competition with Rockstar?

Of course, not everyone dared to have a direct confrontation with the main media giant of the generation.

Release dates for Fable and Phantom Blade Zero games

The developers of the ambitious RPG Fable wisely crawled away to February 2027, deciding to wait out the storm in a safe harbor. Analysts agree that this maneuver is solely due to fear of Rockstar.

Fable game 2027

The Chinese S-Game team did the same: their stylish Phantom Blade Zero slasher was carefully moved to October 29. The official version sounds great: the authors needed additional polishing of the code. However, the industry is well aware of the real motives, although the chosen date still looks dangerously close to the release of GTA VI.

Remedy Entertainment and Control Resonant Strategy

However, there were also brave souls. Remedy Entertainment studio has firmly stated that their Control Resonant will reach players this fall. Finnish developers are confident in the uniqueness of their genre and hope to coexist peacefully with titan.

The rising cost of Grand Theft Auto VI and market risks

The effect of the release of the new Grand Theft Auto goes far beyond the usual game dev. According to forecasts by Circana, the total spending of American gamers in 2026 will grow by 3% and amount to a record 62.8 billion dollars. This will break the maximum of the 2021 pandemic year, when the industry recorded 61.7 billion. It is noteworthy that only GTA 6 is called the key driver of growth — the mobile segment and even the new Switch 2 console fly past the box office.

Gaming industry growth

However, for ordinary players, there are also disturbing rumors. On the sidelines, they are actively discussing the possible increase in the cost of retail copies. If the basic version gets a price tag in the region of $80-90 instead of the standard $70, unit sales may be slightly lower than expected, but total revenue will skyrocket to a cosmic level. In any scenario, the game will irrevocably change industry standards.

September is overloaded with major releases

Even before these announcements, September looked like meat. On the 15th, Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games — pre-orders are already open. It includes Blood of Dawnwalker, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV and Hell is Us. The calendar is bursting at the seams.

Who left and who stayed in the autumn calendar

Fear of GTA 6 is no secret. Some studios have already admitted that they are adjusting their schedules. A recent example is Fable, which was rolled back to February 2027. Analysts believe that it is precisely because of Rockstar.

But not everyone gives up. Remedy Entertainment has announced that their new project, Control Resonant, will also be released in the fall. The studio is confident that the demand for different genres will allow them to coexist even next to a giant.

But Phantom Blade Zero from the Chinese S-Game was formally postponed to October 29 “for polishing”. But everyone understands that they don’t want to get under the distribution in November. However, the date is still dangerously close to the release of GTA 6.

The results of GTA 6’s impact on the gaming industry

The mass transfer strategy for September–October is a double—edged sword. On the one hand, a direct battle with the most anticipated release of the generation was avoided. On the other hand, autumn has turned into a real challenge. The competition between the “runaways” themselves may not be weaker than the fight with GTA 6.

If the predictions come true, the new Rockstar game will dominate not only until the end of 2026, but will also capture a decent chunk of 2027. The coming months are some of the hottest in the history of modern game development. And this is not an exaggeration.
