Elden Ring is another masterpiece from From Software and Hidetaka Miyazaki. Their previous game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, was released back in 2019, and now it’s hard to say when to expect the next one. Judging by how much effort and resources went into Elden Ring, the pause may drag on.
But knowing this, you forgive the game a lot. Yes, it has its shortcomings, but every work of From Software in terms of gameplay beats most modern AAA projects. In their genre, they have almost no competitors. After all, there is little that compares to the feeling of euphoria when, exhausted and on the edge, you finally defeat a powerful boss. And certainly nothing can convey the atmosphere of the inevitable decline of the world that makes Miyazaki’s games truly special.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice told its story more or less directly, but Elden Ring returns to FromSoftware’s classic fragmented narrative. Most of the plot is hidden in item descriptions, random NPC lines, and veiled hints. I could be wrong about the details, but the general idea goes like this: Once upon a time, the Betweenlands was ruled by Queen Marika, an immortal ruler surrounded by her demigod descendants. Thanks to her and the Golden Order, a mixture of religious faith and philosophy, the kingdom flourished. At the center of this teaching was the Ring of Elden: not just a symbol, but the very foundation of the universe that determined how this world works.
But the idyll collapsed when one of the demigods stole the rune of predestined death. Without it, all living beings, including the gods, lost the ability to truly die – instead, they are doomed to rot forever in a cursed existence. In the royal palace, strife began, which quickly escalated into a bloody civil war. The demigods, once loyal to Marika, tore the Elden Ring apart, each trying to get a piece of its former power. As a result, the queen was forced to turn to the last hope – the Extinguished. These are the descendants of the first demigod, who was banished for his sins. Now they must collect the fragments of the Ring and either restore the Golden Order, or build something new on the ruins of the old world.

If you are familiar with the previous FromSoftware games, the plot will seem painfully familiar to you. Before us again is the tragedy of a fallen kingdom, just with new names and decorations. And in this, Elden Ring does not hide its pedigree at all, no matter how much it is called a “completely new universe.”
Elden Ring Open World: Freedom, Exploration, and Hidden Secrets
The main innovation of Elden Ring, which caused the most controversy among Soulsborne fans, is the transition from closed, carefully designed locations to an open world. Many were afraid that this would lose the atmosphere of the series, but the game dispels these doubts quite quickly. About five hours in, when the player defeats the first serious boss, he has almost complete freedom of travel in the Betweenlands. Yes, in order to progress through the story, some tasks will have to be completed in a certain order, but otherwise the developers do not try to limit freedom of action unnecessarily. There are no invisible walls or artificial barriers that are so annoying in other games, only space for exploration. Many key locations can be reached in different ways, sometimes even by accident. For example, I spent an entire evening trying to find the key to the sealed gates of the Academy of Magic. Only later did I realize that all this time I was incorrectly reading the map, which indicated the location of the cache. But in the end it even worked out for the best: instead of just standing at closed doors, I came across a bunch of interesting places that I would have otherwise missed. Elden Ring never puts the player in a hopeless situation. If you get stuck somewhere, just go in another direction, gain strength, find equipment, explore the world. There are plenty of opportunities.
The developers didn’t even forget about the notorious “towers” familiar from Ubisoft games, but decided to use them in their own way. Here they are rare and perform a really useful function, so climbing up for the sake of another portion of information is not a pity at all.
Technically, the open world of Elden Ring is structured the same way as any other sandbox. The map is divided into regions, and each is full of interesting points: mini-dungeons, ruins, hidden locations, riddles and bosses. But if in other games the open world often turns into a checklist of tasks, here everything is different. For example, in the towers of hermit mages, you can get powerful spells, but only if you solve their riddles. In the tombs of heroes, huge mechanical chariots ride around the halls, guarding the peace of the dead – by defeating them, you can get a spirit assistant. Rare resources for upgrading weapons are hidden in the mines, and valuable artifacts and equipment can be found in the ruins. Even giant walking chapels that slowly wander the world on stone paws store the rarest relics – all that remains is to find a way to make them kneel.
You can list such activities endlessly, but the most important thing is the presentation. Most AAA open-world games are afraid that the player will accidentally miss the content, and literally point their finger at it. Elden Ring goes a different way: no one holds your hand and gives out a list of all the interesting places. The game simply creates a world full of secrets and invites the player to explore it himself. What you find and what adventures await you depends only on your choices. As a result, traveling through the Betweenlands feels organic and natural. Finding secrets is interesting because they are really important. Every find, even the smallest one, can save a life in a difficult situation. For example:
- A new amulet can increase your defense and give you a chance to survive a boss fight.
- An ordinary chest may hide not gold, but a teleport to an unexpected region.
- In the nooks and crannies, you can stumble upon an NPC who will give you a useful quest or open access to new opportunities.
- Even a modest piece of ore can help improve your weapon, and therefore increase damage.
This creates that unique spirit of adventure, where every step brings something new. There is always an incentive to explore the world, because you never know what awaits you around the next corner.
Why Elden Ring Is the Quintessence of Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Work
Elden Ring masterfully maintains intrigue for dozens of hours, constantly throwing up surprises and rewarding players with moments of pure delight from discovery. This magic of exploration has long been FromSoftware’s calling card, but now the studio has somehow miraculously transferred the atmosphere of Dark Souls to a world of truly grand scale. The size of the Betweenlands is staggering – leaked images of the map on the Internet do not even come close to convey its true scope. Just when I thought I had finally explored the entire territory, the game grinningly opened up another region in front of me, and then another.
Importantly, FromSoftware did not sacrifice quality for size. Despite the fact that we have an entire continent in front of us, each location here is worked out with signature attention to detail. All this creates the feeling that Hidetaka Miyazaki used the concept of an open world as an excuse for absolute creative freedom. Elden Ring seems to be the studio’s most eclectic project, where there is room for everything: absurdity, grotesque, biblical motifs, high fantasy, tragedy and even elements of space horror.
Here are just a few situations that may catch you off guard:
- You escape from a giant crayfish and accidentally stumble upon a church, where a huge turtle in a cardinal’s hat gives a lecture on the fate of mad gods.
- A night walk along the main road suddenly turns into a duel with a headless horseman who appears out of nowhere.
- An ascent to the mouth of a volcano ends not with a battle with a fiery monster, but with an unexpected bullfight in a crater filled with meteorite fragments.
No less memorable are the secondary characters – each with their own history, personalities and secrets. It’s just a pity that many of them are given very little screen time.
