Insomnia Gaming Festival has cancelled i74 — the festival scheduled for April 30 – May 3 at the Staffordshire County Showground will not take place. The organizers were unable to attract enough sponsors and participants to make their debut at the new venue, and rising production costs finally put an end to the event.

The team announced the decision on March 3. Michael Virks, head of the festival’s operations department, admitted that preparations had been underway for months, but the organizers did not want to go public with a reduced program. “To hold the festival half—heartedly — without the exhibitors and the entertainment that people expect — would be disrespectful to the community,” he explained.

What did the participants and the audience lose?

The i74 program included six confirmed esports tournaments. VALORANT, Overwatch, CS2, League of Legends and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare raffled off 3,000 pounds each, Rocket League — 2,000 pounds. Plus game exhibitions and a BYOC zone with participants’ personal PCs. All of this has now been canceled.

Ticket holders are promised a full refund within seven to ten days.

How do I prepare for the next UK gaming festivals?

For many, the cancellation of i74 is just a pause before the next outing. DreamHack Birmingham, EGX and other UK gaming events have not gone away, and you should prepare for them in advance, otherwise you will lose again.

Tickets. As soon as the organizers announce the dates, fix the sale site — the official website, a large ticket service, but not dubious resellers without clearly defined ticket refund conditions. The money is usually returned within 7-10 business days, but the specific rules always depend on the organizers. If you are traveling with a company, take tickets for one account.: This makes it easier to track statuses and, if necessary, launch a general refund.

Housing and transportation. Hotels near NEC and other exhibition centers become more expensive a couple of weeks before the start — cheap options fly out first. The tactic is simple: once you’ve decided on dates, book a hotel right away with free cancellation and flexible train tickets. The insurance reserve is ready, and the return route is clear in advance.

BYOC and LAN zones. Many UK gaming events still rely on the “come with your PC” format. Minimum checklist:

  • a reliable case for the system unit and peripherals;
  • network cable from 5-10 meters;
  • extension cord and adapters for British sockets;
  • flash drive with drivers, launchers and offline updates;
  • Noise—canceling headphones – it’s loud at festivals.

Comfort package. Long queues, matches until night, LAN zones without proper sleep — it dries up quickly. A bottle of water, a light snack, earplugs, a power bank, cables — all this in a small backpack. It sounds corny, they remember already on the spot.

Plan B. The story of Insomnia 74 has shown that even a festival with a 25-year history can collapse a couple of months before the start due to sponsors, rising costs for live events, and venue changes. Before buying tickets, check whether there are insurance partners, how the cancellation procedure works, who actually returns the money — the site or the organizers themselves. A checklist is not just a list of things. It’s a safety net.

A blow to the British esports scene

Insomnia Gaming Festival has been in existence since 1999 — for 25 years without interruption, the festival has been the anchor of the British event industry. Over the years, Newbury Racetrack, Telford International Center and NEC Exhibition Center in Birmingham have served as venues. In 2018, CWL Birmingham was held here, one of the major Call of Duty tournaments of that era.

The festival closed in 2024, announcing a return in 2026. Apparently, there won’t be a second attempt in the near future. “At the moment, Insomnia is resting,” the organizers summed up, stipulating that with a more favorable sponsorship climate, a return is still possible.
