Bethesda Softworks studio is in full swing spinning the production flywheel of the long—awaited The Elder Scrolls VI (TES VI) – and that’s where Todd Howard decided to throw some wood on the hype bonfire. In a recent interview for the YouTube channel Kinda Funny Games, the game designer, by the way, confirmed that the project has entered the stage of active creation. In fact, the lion’s share of the team is currently working on the game, although they are still afraid to name a specific release date.

Interestingly, the technical foundation of the sixth part will be Creation Engine 3, a deeply upgraded iteration of the engine that Starfield actually flew on. The developers apparently plan to stick to their “classic formula”, diluting it with elements from Fallout 76.

Rumors about the release date are not very encouraging — insiders predict a release no earlier than the end of 2028, and this is in the most optimistic scenario. It looks like it’s going to be a long wait.

The Elder Scrolls 6 release date and reasons for the delay

The Elder Scrolls VI release schedule seems to have become a real puzzle due to Bethesda’s changing priorities. First, all forces were thrown at Fallout 76, then at Starfield, and only now the focus has finally shifted to the “scrolls”. Although we saw the first teaser back at E3 in 2018, the full—fledged gameplay will probably be shown just before the release – the studio loves the “shown and released in six months” tactic, as it was with Skyrim.

Project Development Roadmap

Development Stage Estimated Date Comments
Announcement June 2018 E3 Teaser
Pre-production 2018–2022 Post-Fallout 76
Active Development 2024+ Post-Starfield
Release 2027–2028 After GTA VI?

In addition, the pandemic and the prolonged refinement of the Creation Engine gave the project a couple of extra years. Considering that the industry is waiting for GTA VI in 2025-2026, TES 6 will logically join the queue for the end of 2027 or even 2028. Interestingly, insiders like eXtas1s are trumpeting December 2027 and a possible announcement at the Game Awards, but Bethesda, in fact, is never in a hurry with dates. Thus, the gap between the full—fledged screening and the release will be a maximum of 12 months – cool, really.

Approximate dates of the stages: — Gameplay debut: Probably 2026 (according to the Oblivion scheme). — Release window: Q4 2027 — Q2 2028 (the most realistic forecast). — Exclusivity: Xbox and PC at launch — Microsoft bosses confirm this.

Incidentally, deadlines are influenced not only by the studio’s internal system, but also by external industry titans, to whom Bethesda clearly does not want to expose itself.

Competition with GTA 6 and Microsoft’s influence on release dates

Todd Howard The Elder Scrolls VI

Rockstar, with its GTA VI, is the main predator in the market, and Todd Howard, apparently, understands perfectly well.: going out with such a monster in the same year is a disastrous idea. Bethesda has clearly taken into account the experience of Starfield and is now planning a schedule to capture the audience of RPG fans in a moment of calm after the hype around Grand Theft Auto. Actually, the interval of 15-17 years after the release of Skyrim (2011) sounds scary, but that’s exactly what it’s all about.

It looks like the TES 6 will be the ultimate trump card for Game Pass and the entire Xbox ecosystem at the end of the decade. If the subscription goes up in price, then adventures in Tamriel should be an excuse for players — that’s it. In addition, the studio is planning strong support after the release, inspired by the successes of ESO and correcting the mistakes of Starfield in terms of filling the open world. It’s interesting, of course, how they implement live content in the singleplayer.

Leaks from 4chan are screaming about the end of 2028, but it’s worth being skeptical here — Bethesda is now focused on quality, not on chasing numbers. Therefore, we have a long-term construction project that will either return the studio to greatness or become the loudest disappointment of a generation. Apparently, everything will be decided by how deeply they have explored the world beyond the loading screens.

What they’re cooking for us — basic gameplay insights:

  • Scale: The world can be 1.7 times bigger than in the legendary Skyrim — it’s powerful.
  • Seamless: Small huts and shacks will open without loading — cool, really.
  • The main character: Rumor has it that we will begin our journey as an escaped pirate prisoner who escaped from a prison island during an uprising – typical of the series, but with taste.
  • Logistics: Fast travel, by the way, can be replaced by caravans, boats and road signs – apparently, they will focus on immersiveness.

Production of the TES VI is proceeding smoothly and without excesses — at least, that’s what Howard himself claims. Using Creation Engine 3 should provide a decent picture, although fans are, frankly, wary of the engine.

As a result, we have an ambitious project that is trying to sit on two chairs.: preserve the spirit of the old school and introduce modern technologies. It’s curious how lively the world will turn out to be if large buildings still retain loading screens — that’s it.

In general, Bethesda is betting on scale. We can only hope that the pirate theme and the huge map won’t turn TES VI into a “fantasy-wrapped Starfield” — that would be a shame.
