Developers at WildArts Games and publisher Black Lantern Collective have officially confirmed the release date for their survival horror game, Fright Train. Already dubbed a “mix of Resident Evil and Five Nights at Freddy’s,” the game is set to arrive on PC via Steam on September 15, 2026. Yet the real question isn’t when it arrives, but rather how far this story will go in transcending typical horror expectations.

The setting is classic, yet with a twist. The action unfolds aboard the L.R.S. Great White, a massive research train hurtling across the frozen wastes of Antarctica. Players step into the shoes of Agent Doug Barker, a rookie with P.A.W. (Paranormal Agency Worldwide), an organization dedicated to investigating paranormal incidents. An anonymous distress signal from a train owned by the SHARK corporation serves as the first clue, leading the hero into a trap teeming with interdimensional entities and ice-bound zombies.

A key feature that sets Fright Train apart from similar titles is its “the train must keep moving” mechanic. If the locomotive grinds to a halt, the character will either freeze to death or fall prey to the monsters lurking outside. This is far more than just an atmospheric touch; it is a critical survival condition that dictates the game’s pacing. Keeping the train operational—fixing malfunctions and monitoring equipment—becomes just as vital as gunning down enemies. In this race for survival, every stop spells potential death.

As for the combat system, the developers promise an experience that goes beyond mere monster-shooting. Enemies can interact with one another; some may support their allies, while others might hinder them. This creates a dynamic ecosystem where tactics matter more than raw firepower. The inventory system is also meticulously designed: items are placed on the character’s body, and the time it takes to access them depends on their location. Retrieving ammo from a chest pocket is faster than grabbing it from your back—a small detail, perhaps, but one that could save your life in a critical moment.

The visual style, inspired by mid-2000s games, deserves special mention. It is a deliberate homage to an era when horror games were dark, angular, and genuinely unsettling. Combined with elements of dark humor and self-irony, the game avoids becoming overly melodramatic, remaining instead lively and unpredictable. However, if you were hoping for a long list of console platforms, I’m afraid I have to disappoint you: only a PC version has been confirmed so far. Pricing, regional restrictions, and pre-order bonuses also remain a mystery—the developers are keeping quiet for now.

That said, a demo is already available on the Steam page, allowing you to see for yourself how well the game lives up to its ambitions. The system requirements are known, too:

  • minimum — Windows 10, Intel Core i5-6500, 4 GB RAM, and NVIDIA GTX 980;
  • recommended — Core i7-12700H, 16 GB RAM, and RTX 2060.

Given that WildArts Games already released the horror gem Caput Mortum in 2025, Fright Train is a title worth taking seriously. This isn’t just another run-of-the-mill indie project; it’s a contender for one of the year’s most unique horror games. If you enjoy tense survival horror with unconventional mechanics and an atmosphere that grips you right to the very end, go ahead and add the game to your wishlist. The next stop is September 15th. And remember: the train must not stop.
