The Stop Killing Games initiative has successfully concluded the first phase of its campaign and is now preparing to engage in discussions with representatives from the European Union. Ross Scott, the organizer and popular vlogger behind the movement, shared this exciting update. He emphasized that the collective efforts of the community have effectively brought attention to the alarming trend of widespread online game closures. Additionally, they are addressing the serious issue of users losing access to the games they have purchased once the servers are shut down, highlighting the need for greater protections for consumers in the gaming industry.

How Gamers’ Protest Changed the Rules of Digital Game Distribution

The campaign itself became a worthy example of how the gaming community can unite for a common goal – more than 1.4 million gamers from all over the world signed the petition, expressing their concern about what is happening in the industry. The reason for such a powerful response were resonant events: the disappearance of the original version of Overwatch after the release of the sequel, as well as the complete closure of The Crew. These decisions caused not only bewilderment, but also a real flurry of indignation among players.

As one of the leaders of the movement, Scott, noted, it was such cases that became the trigger for mass protest and showed how vulnerable digital products are in the modern world.

At the moment, an initiative group uniting lawyers, analysts and veterans of the gaming industry is actively preparing an extensive legal framework and a strategy for negotiations with representatives of the European Union. The main goal is to develop a sustainable and transparent system that will guarantee:

  • long-term preservation of digital games,
  • continuous access to already purchased content, even after its support by publishers ends.

This initiative doesn’t just protect the interests of consumers – it shapes the future of gaming, making it more reliable, fair and transparent for millions of players around the world.
