In general, the basic principles remain the same: scientists continue to dismantle trophies and study alien technologies, and engineers, relying on their discoveries, create modern equipment – from magnetic rifles to next-generation armor. In parallel, they clear out abandoned sections of the ship, turning dusty and forgotten rooms into useful modules powered by onboard power systems.

Some buildings received new names: for example, the officer school has now become a partisan school. Completely new buildings have appeared – the military technology center accelerates the healing of fighters and allows you to change their specialization. In the testing zone, engineers are now personally engaged in the development of special projects, such as exosuits, and in the Hall of Shadows, the most important research is carried out, for the sake of which all other work of scientists is suspended. In addition, we are now entrusted with managing personnel ourselves: you can, at your own discretion, transfer engineers to those tasks that need to be completed first.
New types of resources have also been added to the game. In addition to the usual materials (aka money), alien alloys and elerium crystals, we now have intelligence data. We obtain this information like real underground fighters in order to expand our network of contacts with the resistance and make deals on the black market.
Major changes and features of the strategic map in XCOM 2
Although at first glance, many things seem new in XCOM 2, in fact, most of the changes are more cosmetic. The basic model of the organization that went underground has remained the same. In the first part, we saved countries and launched satellites into orbit, and now we establish connections with resistance cells around the world and build repeaters. All this is needed primarily in order to obtain more resources: materials, engineers, soldiers and scientists. The most serious innovation is the base, which no longer stands still, but constantly moves, working in conditions of an acute shortage of time. Time has become the main resource, and it must be spent wisely. The aliens do not just conduct raids and intimidation actions from time to time – they are implementing a secret project “Avatar”. The closer its completion, the sooner we will lose the war.
This is somewhat reminiscent of the mechanics of the recent fantasy strategy Sorcerer King, where an invisible timer counted down the time until the villains reached their goal. To slow down the progress of Avatar, you will have to storm enemy facilities, complete key story missions, steal technology and destroy enemy bases. But you can get to such facilities only after establishing contact with the resistance in the desired region – be it Mexico, Africa, Europe or Brazil. To do this, you first need to build a communications station, and then spend a few more days scanning the territory to get in touch with local fighters. Any movement or action of a mobile base on the global map takes away precious days. Sometimes allies report “points of interest” – to explore them, you will have to spend from three to seven days, but as a reward you can receive resources, recruits or access to operations. Even to pick up cargo sent from headquarters, you need to fly to the place and scan the territory. And all the time you have to choose: go for resources or drop everything and fly to Chile, where a new Avatar object has been discovered? Materials are needed for construction, but lost time on the global map can be too expensive.

At the same time, you have to do research, launch projects, periodically return to headquarters for unique bonuses like accelerated healing or fast construction of buildings. And you also need to react to “hidden events” – the vile intrigues of aliens. If you do not thwart them in time, you will have to put up with unpleasant consequences for some time: a decrease in the influx of resources, an increase in the cost of recruits, or the constant appearance of Faceless in missions – especially dangerous opponents who can change their appearance.

Strengths and weaknesses of the tactical system of XCOM 2
The feeling of lack of time now haunts the player not only in the global strategy, but also in many tactical missions. If on the scale of the entire campaign this adds drive and tension, then in battles on the ground everything is not so clear. The main combat system has remained recognizable: two actions per turn, the use of shelters, heights, roofs and observation mode. There are also five classes – sniper, psionic, assault (aka ranger), grenade launcher and specialist engineer.
At the same time, the arsenal of skills for each has been significantly updated. The ranger, for example, is able to overcome half the map to plunge a blade into the skull of an alien, and with a special stunning sword it is also tactically advantageous. Specialists have acquired drones that can heal allies, attack enemies and even hack enemy turrets or robots – the very ones that the aliens now especially rely on. Sometimes it is even possible to intercept their control for a while. Medals and awards that provided passive bonuses are no longer available — they have been replaced by weapon modifications. Locations have become much more destructible, so grenade launchers now have to be used more carefully. The same applies to roofs: a couple of unsuccessful hits — and the squad along with the roof can end up below.

A new feature is camouflage. Initially, the entire squad is hidden from the enemy’s eyes, and specialists are able to hack cameras and scanners using drones to remain unnoticed. This is especially appreciated by rangers, who have skills such as instant hiding or attacking from the shadows. The enemies have also been updated. In addition to the already mentioned Faceless, there are now mutant snakes that drag fighters into a suffocating embrace, cunning Codes that can clone and teleport right behind their backs, and hovering Archons that rain down a hail of shots from above.
But all these innovations pale in comparison to the main change — strict time frames. Most missions are now sabotage-type: infiltrate a guarded facility, steal valuable data, or mine a building; capture and extract an important character, and so on. You have a strictly limited number of turns to complete them, which sometimes forces you to forget about tactical accuracy and rush to the target, abandoning cover and even part of the squad, just to have time to evacuate at least someone. Even collecting trophies from defeated enemies is now subject to a timer. On the one hand, this adds dynamics, freshness, and a tense atmosphere. When you manage to take a VIP at the last moment and save a couple of veterans (even if the rest were captured), you get the feeling that you have just pulled off a real feat – albeit at a bitter price.
However, the old problem, familiar from Enemy Unknown, has not gone away: your fighters can miss dozens of times in a row, even with a hit chance of 80% or higher. And if one of them is destined to die on the next move, all that is often left is to watch helplessly.
XCOM 2 Pros and Cons: Is It Worth Playing in 2025
Yes, XCOM 2 has something to criticize. First of all, for the unsuccessful optimization of the engine, due to which the game manages to sag in performance even on high-end computers. However, if you close your eyes to this shortcoming, the new experiment of Firaxis Games with the DNA of the cult series can be called successful. The atmosphere of guerrilla warfare in the conditions of a constant shortage of resources and a strict time limit makes the gameplay noticeably more dynamic and complex.
