The promise of a cozy detective quest, classic narrative mechanics, and a short walkthrough didn’t scare the audience away — quite the opposite. By the summer of 2021, the game had firmly established itself in the lists of the most anticipated releases of the season. There was an intrigue from the very beginning — but did it pay off after the release?

Each attempt reveals new details, and gradually it becomes clear: behind this tragedy there is a secret that must be solved. And only by finding new paths and answers can one hope to escape the endless horror of the same evening.

Gameplay and Features of 12 Minutes
Is it possible to change the course of events? In life, it’s unlikely, but in video games we are looking for this opportunity. Unlike films, where the viewer remains a passive observer, in games we have the right to turn aside and try another path. But in 12 Minutes, this freedom is limited. As soon as you leave the apartment door, the cycle starts over. And the list of objects that you can interact with is so small that it is quickly remembered.
The player’s main tool is not things, but conversations. The hero has few interlocutors: a wife, a mysterious “policeman”, and a few more numbers in the phone book. But even here, you shouldn’t expect complete freedom. The lines open strictly according to the script, and in order for a new line of dialogue to appear in the future, you will have to go through the old one almost without changes. It turns out to be a strange illusion of variability: it seems like there is a choice, but it turns out to be strictly defined.

If you look at the gameplay itself, it is in many ways reminiscent of classic quests. You need to collect objects, combine them and check what happens. At the same time, each attempt is limited by time, and some events occur strictly on schedule, regardless of what you do. The atmosphere is somewhat reminiscent of “How to Annoy Your Neighbor”, only without humor and with a much darker subtext.
True, there are less than two dozen items in the game, and the only “scene” is a tiny apartment. Variability suffers, and any experiments with the hero’s actions still run into the plot framework. There is no real “sandbox” here – only repeating cycles with small deviations.
The gameplay in 12 Minutes is not striking in freshness and does not offer revolutionary ideas. The main hope of the game is the plot and acting. After all, it was not for nothing that the developers invited famous Hollywood stars to the project.
Is Twelve Minutes Worth Playing?
There are spoilers, but I will say it straight: the story did not impress me. Or rather, it surprised me, but not in the way I would like — its predictability. The first attempts at the game give hope for something intricate and multi-layered, almost in the spirit of David Lynch (and the game deliberately pushes towards such associations). But the closer to the finale, the more the old Latin American series from the nineties come to mind — the denouement looks at their level.
As for the actors, everything is ambiguous. The voice acting is done well, there is no doubt about it, but the very “top-down” delivery practically deprives the game of cinematography. And the repetitive dialogues quickly turn the strong voices of the stars into background noise: after the twentieth time, you start mechanically “clicking” through the scenes, without reading or listening. From the technical side, miracles are also not to be expected. No one expected a graphical breakthrough, but when characters pass through each other or the game crashes due to bugs, it’s too much.

And yet, there is one paradoxical plus. The constant need to start all over again is annoying, but it is this feeling that brings the player closer to the main character. You literally live through his despair: you do not understand what is happening, you want to find answers and are angry that you cannot influence the events in any way. At some point, I even caught a funny effect – my character repeated out loud the same phrase that I muttered a second ago. It felt like a slight destruction of the “fourth wall”.
In the end, 12 Minutes is rather disappointing. Perhaps it is due to too high expectations after the announcement with famous actors or the authority of Annapurna Interactive. Their previous game about a time loop – Outer Wilds – was a real revelation and rightfully collected many enthusiastic reviews. Here, everything looks simplified: the plot is naive, the mechanics are banal. But if there is nothing more worthy at hand, you can still spend a couple of evenings in 12 Minutes. After all, we go to the cinema not only to see Lynch.
