The Tomb Raider series has always held a special place in the hearts of gamers, and the anticipation for a remastered collection of the first three titles is palpable. Of all the video game series, Tomb Raider is the one that gets my attention at every trade show, awards show, or other venue where a new game might be announced. I’ve written about how long we’ve been waiting for a new project. Many gamers are also waiting, perhaps dashed on the rocks of Yamatai. For them, the remastered trilogy will be a solace.

The trilogy is the first three games in the series. Normally, I’d add that they’ve been “updated for the modern age,” but that’s not quite true. It’s an interesting point to consider: games are often too eager to erase their own history, so fidelity to the originals is important. At the same time, the originals are available on PC in all their glory, and the first game was already remastered in 2007’s Anniversary Edition. Perhaps that fidelity is overdone.

Tomb Raider Overview

Despite all the changes, the core game is still the same, and I’m glad that Tomb Raider’s legacy hasn’t been forgotten for the sake of today’s more demanding players. The game looks like an improved version of its 90s look, with a more cartoonish style compared to the photorealism of the Survivor trilogy, which is certainly a good move. However, as I mentioned, being faithful to the original has its costs.

While the ability to instantly switch between graphics modes is an interesting decision, it also imposes limitations. In the 90s, the level of design required angular shapes, as circles were a designer’s dream. In today’s graphics environment, this adherence to the style looks much more dated than even the classic mode. It’s distracting: the square sections of the floor felt so out of place that I thought they were a clue to some mysterious element or platforming section I’d forgotten.

I searched for a solution and found none, only to switch to classic graphics in the hope that something would stand out – and realized that it was just an aesthetic element. Using modern graphics while maintaining an angularity that was never intended to exist makes it seem like the simplest solution was chosen, not the best. This is highlighted by the fact that I tried changing graphic modes in search of a clue: the lighting in the remaster is very different, and switches or doors that used to be clearly defined are now lost in the background in the pursuit of realism. This graphical upgrade is especially noticeable during cutscenes. As FMV clips, they already looked significantly better than the game itself, and now all that has changed is that they are less blurry on a modern TV.

Such faithful recreations of the levels also lead to problems with modern controls. I tried both the new and the original “tank” control methods. While the “tank” controls have come back to me over time, it always felt like riding a wild steed. I can tame it for a while, but there’s a docile pony nearby that can do the same job without too much trouble. The problem is that ponies have their own shortcomings. The levels were designed for a tank Lara, and trying to rotate the camera while jumping (as you can in any Tomb Raider of this era or the games it inspired) results in chaos, with only the top of her head showing.

The modern controls also fail to deliver the smoothness required, and often found Lara catching a ledge too late or simply running off the edge of a platform even when I pressed the buttons in time. The modern controls are a bit of a letdown, as the game expects tank controllers, and the tank controls themselves aren’t the most comfortable either.

That said, it’s hard to argue that this is probably the best way to play the original Tomb Raider trilogy now. You can play the levels as they were intended, with tank controls for complete authenticity, or enjoy the polish with more comfortable Lara controls. I just wish it were a little more polished – other than improved graphics (which is pretty subjective in itself), there’s not much new to the experience.

Of course, some people may not have played these games at all. I find that hard to believe, but TheGamer staff includes professional adults who weren’t born when Tomb Raider came out. They weren’t born when Tomb Raider 3 came out either. So it’s important to consider the games themselves, too.

Tomb Raider Trilogy Remaster Review

The games are still as great as ever. I’ll admit, I miss some of the improvements that Anniversary brought to the original Tomb Raider, but I appreciate the pure atmosphere that Lara’s debut offered. Tomb Raider 2, meanwhile, remains one of my favorite games (and, more critically, one of the best in the series). No game, not even my beloved Legend, captures the spirit of Lara Croft quite like Tomb Raider 2 does.

New players will be surprised by how many seemingly harmless animals Lara is forced to destroy (and the oddly updated, blocky models instead of creating new bears). Still, the climbing, puzzle-solving, and secret-hunting elements that the series has abandoned in favor of more action-packed gunplay create a classic Tomb Raider atmosphere. For all the fans who came along later, it’s worth going back and seeing what made Tomb Raider great, even with the potential control issues.

Tomb Raider Remastered Trilogy isn’t as polished as its ‘90s rivals like Crash Bandicoot: The N. Sane Trilogy or Spyro Reignited, and it probably won’t win over many new fans. Those great games still look good at a basic level, but the remaster doesn’t offer a perfect way to play them. I fear the reaction will be more “what’s all the fuss about?” rather than “what have I been missing all these years!” Tomb Raider deserves a little more.

It’s a combination of nostalgia, respect for the legacy, and truth when I say that Tomb Raider 2 is a perfect game for its time, and that its neighbors are worth checking out, too. I hope newcomers give it a chance, but it feels like the remaster could have done more to that end.
