For many, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is not just a cartoon, but a piece of childhood filled with warmth and nostalgia. Some remember rushing home after school or getting up early on weekends just to make it to the beginning of the series about the green brothers fighting evil. Those who are older probably remember the game rooms with bright arcade machines, where you could fully immerse yourself in this world with your friends.
I didn’t live through the real boom of arcades, so for me, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are primarily associated with the animated series of the 2000s and, of course, with the game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project. My friend and I spent hours hanging out at the old cartridge console, and these memories still make me smile. It was they, perhaps, who pushed me to buy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge – as if it were an opportunity to return to that carefree time.

As soon as I launched the game, a wave of memories literally fell upon me. Seeing the pixelated logos of Dotemu and Tribute Games, I felt for a moment as if I was holding an old 8-bit console in my hands again. The atmosphere works flawlessly from the first seconds: the game seems to deliberately pull us back to childhood and does it with amazing ease. But the question arises – what is hidden behind this nostalgic shell? Can a classic beat-em-up interest us in 2022?
Of course, such games are best revealed in the company of friends. But, as luck would have it, my childhood friend was not around. Fortunately, Shredder’s Revenge does not make you bored alone. Everything is arranged here in such a way that it is easy to find partners: you can create your own lobby and wait for those who want to join, or you can break into an existing game. Moreover, there is even a system for searching for players at the level where you stopped last time. Thanks to the active community after the release, you will definitely not be alone. The only fly in the ointment is that sometimes I encountered a bug: the characters simply did not load at the beginning of the level, and I had to restart the session to continue the game.

A real feeling of “the good old days” especially strongly rolls over when you turn on the Story Mode. Everything here is extremely simple and familiar: an easy introduction, a straightforward plot and a laconic presentation. Instead of long cutscenes – a short animated video with credits, and between missions we are greeted by funny inserts, where another villain runs away from the turtles, forcing us to rush into pursuit again. All this is done as simply and deliberately old-fashioned as possible, but this is precisely where the charm of the game lies.
No cost, no problem – your next adventure starts with a steam free account.
Gameplay and character features
The gameplay in the game turned out to be much more interesting than I expected. From the very beginning, we are offered to choose one of six heroes: Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo, Splinter or April O’Neil. And after completing the main campaign, Casey Jones joins them. It is important that the characters differ not only in appearance – each has their own animations, style and set of characteristics. This makes the team truly diverse and adds depth to the passage.
For example, Leonardo is the most balanced option, he has average strength, speed and strike range. Donatello acts slower, but thanks to his bo-staff, he has a huge radius of destruction. His complete opposite is Michelangelo: he is incredibly fast, but his attacks are short. And so everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. After I tried all the heroes, the choice of the favorite was obvious – Donnie. His long stick allowed me to build entire series of blows, and in the end it was with him that I got the most spectacular combos. At the end of each level, the game shows statistics: the maximum length of the series and the total number of knockouts. If you play with friends, it turns into a real competition – who will be cooler.

Before the start of the level, there is a mini-instruction on the available attacks. There are regular combos, and a super blow that opens after accumulating “ninja energy”. To charge it, you need to collect series of blows: the longer the series, the faster the scale grows, but as soon as you take damage – and everything disappears. There are jumping attacks, and techniques after dodging, and heavy blows that take longer to charge, but break through the block and do not allow enemies to knock us down. You can grab opponents, throw them at each other or even throw them off the screen. The choice is impressive, although they do not allow you to train separately – you have to master everything right in the fight.
When you play with four people, it becomes more difficult to figure things out: sometimes you yourself don’t understand where your character is in this chaos. That’s why I recommend going through a couple of levels solo first, getting used to the attacks, and then calling your friends. But if you don’t want to delve into all the mechanics, you can act more simply: just randomly press Z, X, and S (jump, hit, and dodge). This approach also works. Of course, closer to the final levels, difficulties will begin — the enemies become stronger, and without the proper use of super attacks, it will be more difficult. But even “playing at random” gives a lot of pleasure, and sometimes it is this that makes the process the most fun.
How Story and Arcade Mode Work in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The game is based on a map of New York, along which we move, choosing the next episode to complete. Having completed one level, you can immediately move on along the plot, or you can stay and try again – to find all the hidden secrets or complete additional tasks. By the way, there are three such tests on each level: for example, to complete it without a single hit, deal with three enemies using a super move, or avoid more than three hits with objects. They are common, and often repeated in different locations.

In addition to the story, the game has an arcade mode. At first glance, it is not much different, but there is one important difference – there are no saves and a second chance. Started a run – be kind enough to complete it to the end without the right to replay individual episodes. Died? All over again. This scheme makes the arcade more intense, but adds excitement. And, like the plot, the arcade can be completed with friends. This is not only more fun, but also much more convenient: if your health is zero, your comrades will have another ten seconds to get you back in line by “feeding” you a slice of pizza.
Review of the pros and cons of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge
Overall, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge left a pleasant impression. It’s a bright, dynamic and atmospheric game that you really want to dive into again and again. It pleases both fans of retro action games and those who just love a fun co-op. But I can only call it a must-buy for true fans of the Ninja Turtles.

The reason is simple – it turned out to be too short. I went through the story without much haste, tried the arcade mode in the company and alone, returned to the levels several times to complete additional tasks – and still, in the end, Steam showed only 5.4 hours. And this is despite the fact that I was not chasing speed. Five and a half hours for a full release is, frankly, too little. It’s one thing to spend a token in an arcade machine and play for a couple of hours, but it’s quite another to shell out $10 and get a game that ends before you can properly enjoy it.
What I liked:
-
It’s easy to find partners to play with;
-
Each character has their own style and unique features.
What I didn’t like:
-
The game’s catastrophically short duration.
