Shadow Warrior (2013) is a first-person shooter, an attempt to breathe new life into the cult game of 1997. The project was taken on by the Polish studio Flying Wild Hog, known for Hard Reset, and published by none other than Devolver Digital – the same ones who gave us Hotline Miami and STRAFE.
Frankly speaking, it was not without controversy. On the one hand, the old-timers were nostalgic, the critics nodded approvingly, and even Lo Wang himself returned with his signature jokes. But there was no mass enthusiasm in the store. Buyers, as usual, were divided: some began to nostalgically compare it to the original and complain that the grass in the remake is not the same, it does not tickle the soul with chlorophyll. Someone expected something in the spirit of Far Cry and did not understand how you can play a shooter without an open world, viewpoints and capturing outposts. And some people shied away from the words “Polish shooter” like the devil from incense – reflexes, you know.
Ironically, history repeated itself. Like the original, the reboot found its audience, but never became a hit. Sales remained modest, and when Shadow Warrior 2 came out, it almost didn’t resemble the original in any way. So much so that those who were waiting for the return of “that very game” could only sigh and smoke a sad cigarette without the smell of summer.
That’s where I wanted to talk about this strange, bright and underrated game. I’ll try not to be fanatical, but also not to be boring. So get comfortable – make some tea, put a pillow under your back, because there will be a lot of text further on, but almost no pictures. And the GOG version, the bastard, doesn’t get along with the overlay.

No one expected a deep drama with twists and metaphysical reflections under the sakura petals from Shadow Warrior 2013. And thank God. Those who remember the original know: without a couple of glasses and help from Google, it was difficult to understand what was happening there.
Everything is different here – simple, fun and to the point. The main character is Lo Wang, a charismatic chatterbox who with equal pleasure jokes below the belt, chops demons into cabbage and gobbles up cookies. He has a great partner – a demon named Hodge. He suffers from amnesia and has a caustic sense of humor. Well, and a magic sword is included – the seller, however, quickly drops out of the plot, so do not get attached.

The plot is presented in a classic genre. Comic-style inserts explain who all these demonic villains are, where their otherworldly reality, the Shadow Realm, came from, and why they suddenly decided to visit our world. Most often, the story is told through first-person cutscenes: they provide motivation, explain why the bamboo forest suddenly changed to a dungeon, how Lo Wang ended up on the Manticore, where the snow came from, and why it hurts so much to fall now. At the same time, the scenes are not drawn out, do not tire, and, importantly, you can skip them – even if you play through them again, they do not irritate you.
No, the plot here does not pretend to be a contender for the award for best screenplay. And although the ending tries to squeeze out a tear, it will only really touch the particularly sensitive. But it is not even about the plot – it is about how it is presented. Lively characters, ironic dialogues, tons of references and Easter eggs like “I came here to chew gum and kick ass… and the gum is already running out” — all this fills the world with life. Add Lo Weng’s signature phrases and notes with “fortune’s wisdom” — and you get a game that you really want to be in, not just run through level after level.

Shadow Warrior Gameplay
As befits a classic old-school shooter, everything is simple in Shadow Warrior: you go from point A to point B, shooting everything that moves, picking up ammo, opening doors and blowing up everything that can explode. The logic is simple – forward, through bullets and guts.
The game world looks really impressive. Here you have well-groomed blooming gardens, and cozy streets, and gloomy cemeteries, and laboratories, and even the ominous dimension of Shadow Realm. Everything is detailed, colorful and pleasing to the eye. It is especially cool that almost everything can be smashed to pieces – from cars to barrels. Well, how could we do without barrels, a classic of the genre. The only place that caused a persistent “meh” in me was the bamboo forest. But here I am biased: I didn’t like it even in the original.

However, the devil, as they say, is in the details. It’s worth slowing down a bit and stopping rushing like a hurricane, as you begin to notice – the scenery is sometimes too monotonous. At some point you catch yourself thinking: have I been here, or have I just seen exactly the same room a couple of levels ago? And also – invisible walls. A real heartfelt greeting from the designers. In the original game, you could try to jump to any ledge – the only limits were physics and your agility. And here – corridors, corridors, corridors. Yes, sometimes there are forks … Probably … Somewhere.
As a result, the world of Shadow Warrior (2013) is both a thrill and a disappointment. It is great for running through it with a battle cry, pouring lead on everyone around and enjoying the process. But if you decide to stop and explore the environment a little – alas, it is unlikely to bring pleasure. This game is not about that. It is about drive and meat. And it copes with this perfectly.
What enemies and bosses await you in Shadow Warrior
As befits a lively shooter, the world of Shadow Warrior is teeming with enemies. Demons are literally at every turn here – and almost all of them, to put it mildly, do not shine with intelligence. Sometimes “hand-to-hand fighters” with the instinct of “run and scratch” rush at you, then a fireball from a local “long-distance driver” flies from around the corner. There are also curious specimens like exploding mutants with egg-like growths, “shieldmen” with inflated self-esteem and “pilots” who, with some perverted pleasure, slam into the ground so that it becomes pitiful. By the way, this is not the entire list – I will leave some of the opponents without description. Let them be a surprise.
And when you start to feel too confident, the game throws in heavy artillery. “Commanders” with huge axes come out on stage – not only do they hit hard, but they also charge the soldiers nearby with fighting enthusiasm. “Shamans” from the spirits at your disposal resurrect everyone you sent to the next world with such difficulty. And the dull but persistent “rhinos” honestly try to trample you, like in dozens of other games before. All this cheerful madness falls on the player with varying intensity, forcing him not to stand still, but to constantly move, shoot and look for someone else to chase. Moreover, the battles here are staged great: the map constantly changes, the enemies effectively fall apart into pieces, and all this does not have time to get boring until the very end. Sometimes they even let you shoot a couple of people – apparently, for variety.

What’s really frustrating, though, are the bosses. There are only three of them, and each one of them… well, let’s face it, wouldn’t even qualify for a mini-boss position in Doom. Slow, predictable, weak points glow like neon signs, and you get so many supplies during the fight that you could pave the road to the end credits. Even the main villain – the one who is supposed to be “the concentrated evil of the universe” – looks like a lost baby compared to the horde you have to cut through before meeting him. The irony is that the most interesting fight is the one with the only human boss. At least he sets conditions for you, behaves lively, and really makes you sweat.
Lo Wang’s arsenal consists of nine types of weapons, including some rather unusual options like torn hearts and demon heads. However, fans of the original game will notice some replacements: for example, shurikens have given way to a revolver, and a flamethrower has replaced a grenade launcher. Yes, you can no longer swing your fists, the railgun has also been dragged off to the scrap heap, but a very convenient crossbow has appeared, and this is, frankly, an excellent replacement.

Along with weapons, fast strafes also came into the game – so effective that they can be considered a separate type of weapon. They both dodge damage and accumulate karma easier.
Each weapon can be upgraded by unlocking an alternative shooting mode. The crossbow will start shooting sticky bombs, the flamethrower will throw fire grenades, and the rocket launcher will get an auto-target lock. It all sounds cool, but there is a nuance: upgrades cost money, and money is scattered around the levels and not always in large quantities. The upgrade system evokes mixed feelings. In the classic 90s, everything was simpler: found it – use it. And here you seem to first have to “earn” the upgrade. For an old-school player, this may seem like an artificial limitation, and in general – most of the time you will still run around with one or two favorite guns, and you won’t even try the rest. Of course, no one forbids changing weapons. Moreover, for actively “juggling” the arsenal, they even give karma. But to be honest – you can complete the game with just a sword. After upgrading, it can launch an energy wave, heal the owner, and a successful hit restores up to 30 HP. So in skilled hands, the sword is both a weapon and a first aid kit in one bottle.
How to Use Karma and Chi Crystals in Shadow Warrior
In Shadow Warrior, not only the arsenal can be upgraded, but also Lo Wang himself. Two resources are used for this: karma and chi crystals. With karma, everything is simple – you do good deeds (well, as much as possible in a world where you cut up demons left and right), earn points, and then spend them on improvements. You can increase your health and endurance, enhance your skills with a katana, and get other useful passives.
But you will have to look for chi crystals manually – they are scattered throughout the levels and glow so brightly that it is simply impossible to pass by. These crystals enhance the magical abilities that Lo Wang was taught by the caustic demon Hodji. The hero can heal himself, use analogues of magical signs like Quen and Aard, and also lift enemies into the air, turning them into convenient targets. Although in fact, almost everything always comes down to healing – other spells are good only on paper.

Why is that? It’s all about control. To, for example, launch enemies into the air, you need to press S, then S again, and then RMB – it is advisable to do all this on the run and it is advisable not to die along the way. At the same time, the right mouse button is also responsible for alternative shooting, so the result is often, to put it mildly, not what you wanted. Against this background, simply shooting off the enemy’s head is much easier and more enjoyable.
The katana’s skill activation system, by the way, is also not simple: S, S, LMB – and Lo Wang launches a wave that destroys everything in its path. It sounds impressive, but in the heat of battle, such combinations often hinder than help.
Is Shadow Warrior Worth Playing?
Shadow Warrior has a couple of interesting features that I haven’t mentioned before. For example, sometimes you come across stationary machine guns right on the levels. I won’t say that this is really wow, but if you want to relax a little, you can set up a mini-shooting range and blow a couple of demons to pieces. Not like in the original, of course, where you were allowed to crush everything alive with a tank, but it’ll do. And here you often encounter riddles in the style of: “if you want to open the door, smash the statue.” After which, as if on command, the script starts, and a fresh batch of demons comes rushing towards the main character. A classic of the genre.

The following moments were especially memorable:

Machine gun nests that turn the level into a shooter attraction;

Script traps with sudden waves of enemies;

A level with a mine cart that brings back memories of old arcades;

A gas mask that limits your view and adds claustrophobia.
By the way, about the trolley — it’s really annoying here. You’re driving, shooting blindly, missing, freaking out… A pure greeting from the 2000s.
Add a gas mask to this. It sounds cool until you spend more than a couple of minutes in it — a distorted picture, limited view… At some point, you start to feel like a suffering simulator rather than a hero. But, to be honest, all this doesn’t make the game bad. Shadow Warrior 2013 is not a masterpiece, but it’s made with soul. It’s not a trendy cinematic action movie or an old-school shooter with pixels and acid. It’s something in between — lost in time, but that only makes it more charming.
And even if it’s not perfect, it’s so cheerful, bloody and fun. If you want some action, dark humor and heartfelt dismemberment, you should definitely play it. So I wish you a good session: more flying limbs, torn out hearts and cheerful screams of demons on your way.
