The development started in March 2011 and took about six months. The independent studio Be-Rad Entertainment, founded by game designer Brad Johnson, was responsible for the creation. The Unity engine became the basis, and part of the code from Lame Castle was redesigned and improved to add new features and mechanics.

Special attention was paid to the visual style: all the graphics were hand—drawn by artist Stefan Royer with colored pencils, which gave the game a unique aesthetic and atmosphere of the old indie animation. The developers tried to keep the players’ attention longer than in typical runners, so they added boss battles, missions, and even role-playing elements like character enhancement. However, after testing, these RPG aspects were removed – they did not fit into the pace of the game.

Be-Rad Entertainment gained almost complete creative control over the project, with the exception of a few edits regarding Sam’s appearance, which were coordinated with the publisher. Initially, it was planned to complete the development in two months, but the process dragged on to six — every detail required refinement.

The final release took place on September 15, 2011 on Android and iOS, and the PC version was released a little later — on January 24, 2012. Despite its small scale, the project has become a prime example of how a talented indie team is able to bring fresh ideas to even an iconic franchise.

The controls are adapted to mobile devices: the jump is performed from the left side of the screen, the attack is performed from the right. There is even a double jump, which increases the horizontal distance and allows you to avoid dangers. Among the powerups, there is a slowing down of time, a decrease in rage, an increase in points — all this helps to last longer and get closer to the goal.

For a change, the developers have added the ability to unlock kamikaze skins so that he doesn’t always look headless, as well as three game modes:
