It’s still hard to believe that the little-known Croteam studio at that time, which had only a few strange experiments for the rare Commodore Amiga, managed to create such a bright and daring shooter. Their project didn’t just stand out — it set a new rhythm, offering uncompromising combat and a flurry of emotions.
Despite the intentionally simple, almost old-school gameplay, Serious Sam was striking in its dynamics. The adrenaline that the game literally injected into the blood made every fight intense, and each passage was unique in its own way. Players spent sleepless nights in it, constantly returning for the feeling of speed, chaos and vibrant combat atmosphere. This action game worked like a magnet: the more hordes of enemies appeared on the horizon, the more I wanted to continue.
And even today, one has only to remember those crazy races racing with roaring kamikazes or desperate shootouts with whole hordes of monsters, as a familiar shudder rolls down one’s spine. Honestly, it’s still a mystery how the developers managed to completely bleed out the fast-paced gameplay that became the hallmark of the first part of Serious Sam. Instead of a branded drive, players are given an unexpectedly calm, even relaxed action. However, do not think that the game has turned into a walk through the desert: at every step you are still met by aggressive monsters ready to tear the hero to shreds, and we, as usual, respond with heavy fire. But, alas, the general rhythm of the adventure has become predictable — and already at the beginning it is clear that there are no further surprises to be expected.

The problem lies in the pace — it has noticeably subsided. Enemies attack sluggishly, as if reluctantly, turning shootouts into a simplified shooting range, where the player only needs to patiently pull the trigger. Movement, evasion, and combat dynamics have all become secondary. As a result, saving the world with a renewed Sam feels surprisingly bland. The drive that used to make you literally bounce in your chair has disappeared. The first few levels are still capable of entertaining, but withstanding over forty episodes is a challenge even for fans of hardcore shooter gameplay.

Serious Sam 2’s arsenal and visual design
The sad thing is that the trouble is not limited to mechanics. The design of the levels and weapons evokes similar emotions: it is colorless and devoid of personality. There are fifteen guns in the arsenal, but only a small part of them is impressive. To make it clearer what types of weapons are represented in the game, they can be roughly divided as follows:

However, even here, joy quickly turns to disappointment — the enemies are as pale as the weapons. There are almost no memorable opponents, and faceless giants, green spiny creatures and crowds of undead are annoying with their monotony. Their deaths look ineffective and bring almost no pleasure. If we recall the enchanting nature of the enemies in Painkiller, the contrast becomes especially obvious — Serious Sam II seems lifeless against this background.

Fortunately, the developers decided to develop the plot component. The second part has a complete story with the search for an artifact and the pursuit of another world villain. Each level is accompanied by clips, dialogues and Sam’s trademark humor — and sometimes the jokes really worked out. This makes the passage more diverse, even if it does not save the entire project.
From the visual side, Serious Sam II tries to look solid, but it is far from the leaders of the genre. Good jungle and aquatic locations are juxtaposed with dubious special effects and angular animation of monsters. The chosen cartoon style adds lightness to the game, turning the battles into vivid, almost comic skirmishes against the background of acid-green grass and excessively sunny scenery.
The physical model is present in the game, but it makes a strange impression. Enemies fly away from the shotgun for a good ten meters, but the explosion of a grenade, on the contrary, barely lifts them off the ground. The feeling of realism is clearly not the main priority here.
But the destruction system turned out to be vigorous: trees fall under the blows of explosions, huts instantly crumble, boxes fly into splinters. After a large—scale battle, the location really resembles a battlefield – it adds atmosphere. It is a pity that the maps themselves are rather poor in content: huge expanses of the same type of tundra, desert or jungle, and rare settlements represent a minimum of buildings. The detail is noticeably inferior to competitors and sometimes causes outright boredom.
