You will have to dance around them like around an enraged bull – one step to the side, and you are already a smoking pile of metal.

But driving the car is a pleasure. It slides around corners with such a chic drift that you involuntarily recall the best moments from Hot Pursuit. Jumps on bumps, tricks, flips – all this looks like an ideal combination of arcade drive and visual fun. Even when your car crashes into a wall with a roar and turns upside down, it causes a smile rather than irritation. Everything is done with such charm that you want to drive around the maps just like that – without a goal, for fun.

Renegade Ops: Co-op, Heroes, and Replayable Gameplay

From a visual point of view, Renegade Ops looks more than decent. There is no feeling of “copypasta” here – each mission takes place in a new setting, and you are not just rushing through another dull desert. Today you are storming a fortified base in the mountains, tomorrow you are smashing the jungle with enemy camps to pieces, and then rushing through sand storms. The locations differ not only visually, but also in structure – you have to rebuild tactics on the fly. All this is seasoned with a juicy picture – the engine from Just Cause 2 does its job: special effects, explosions, detailing of the environment – it is pleasant to watch. However, behind this external beauty there is a problem: Renegade Ops runs out of steam ahead of time. Yes, the arcade gameplay is lively, the controls are responsive, shooting and explosions cause instant pleasure. But after a couple of hours it becomes clear that nothing new will happen. Everything you saw in the first half is repeated further on, only in slightly different settings. The campaign takes 3-4 hours to complete, and by the end the feeling of novelty has had time to evaporate. If you are not a fan of the old school, which the game clearly wants to revive, boredom can set in quite quickly.

But it cannot be said that the developers did not try to diversify the process at all. Before the start of each episode, the player is offered to choose one of the heroes – and each of them not only looks different, but also plays differently. One pilots a fast jeep with an electric strike, another drives an armored car with thick armor and the ability to call in an airstrike, the third is a support master. Each character has his own style, and this is nice.

In addition, the game has a leveling system: for completing tasks and destroying enemies, you earn experience that allows you to improve the characteristics of the character. You can increase ammunition, strengthen armor, reduce the cooldown of skills. This RPG component adds a tactical element and encourages experimentation: try one hero in one mission – in the next you will want to take another and try out new tactics. And it works. Thanks to the uniqueness of each hero, the passage can be a little freshened up. Especially if you consciously change characters from mission to mission, the gameplay doesn’t change, but it feels a little more energetic.

But what really makes the game come alive is the co-op. Any game, even an average one, becomes much more interesting if you play with friends. In the case of Renegade Ops, this is especially noticeable. When you’re alone, you feel the monotony: the same waves of enemies, the same goals, the same pace. But invite a friend – and everything changes. One distracts the enemies, another destroys armored vehicles, the third covers from the air. Joint actions, support and live communication take the experience to a completely different level. And the campaign in this format is faster, more fun and with more passion. Even moments that could be annoying alone turn into a reason to laugh and discuss tactics on the fly.

Renegade Ops is the kind of game you don’t expect, but are pleasantly surprised by. But as soon as you hook up a friend or two, the real chaos begins: rockets fly in all directions, screens are full of fire, and the laughter never stops.

The project from Avalanche Studios doesn’t try to be something more than it is. It honestly pays tribute to classic arcades and is not afraid of its “old school”. This is not a game you’ll come back to for weeks, but for a couple of evenings – especially in a group – it will give you a lot of pleasure. The locations are colorful, the heroes differ in abilities, and everything around literally explodes from an excess of action. And the final video, albeit short, ends the adventure with a smile.

If you grew up on arcades like Jackal, Desert Strike or just like simple, dynamic entertainment, Renegade Ops will be a blast.
