Back in 1997, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee discs were passed around like secret artifacts — in half-whispers, with restrained laughter and a slight sense of the forbidden. Discussing it out loud, especially at school, was risky: what if the head teacher hears? How would you explain that “mudokon” is not an insult at all, but a peaceful alien, the main character of the game, and not your classmate?
Where this word “mudokon” came from, no one ever understood. Either the developers simply collected strange sounds at random to make something alien, or there was someone among them who understood how it would sound in a Russian ear. In any case, the name of Abe and his strange world was remembered even by those who were cool about games.
And now, years later, Abe’s name is on everyone’s lips again. The wave of remakes has reached it too – Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty carefully recreates the original game from 1997, but on a modern 3D engine. This is not just a restyling, but a complete update – something like Black Mesa for Half-Life fans. The same story, the same atmosphere – only now without pixel ripples, with living shadows, textures and emotions.

Oddworld is not just a game. It is an unusual combination of a platformer and a quest, where jumping and puzzles go hand in hand with emotions and moral choices. At the center of this dark, ironic story is Abe, a modest Mudokon with huge eyes and a kind heart. He worked at the meat processing plant “RuptureFarms” without asking unnecessary questions. Day after day – the same conveyor belts, the same smells. Until one day he accidentally heard the terrible truth: the owners of the factory decided that the next product would be a delicacy called “Mudokons on a stick”. And Abe is one of the ingredients.
At this moment, his life turns upside down. Instead of mindless work – escape, instead of submission – fight. He decides to save not only himself, but also as many of his fellows as possible, trapped in a cruel industrial system.

But escaping from the factory does not mean just sneaking out through the ventilation. Each Mudokon literally needs to be led by the hand. Abe commands them, coaxes them, whispers: “Follow me”, “Stay here”. He disarms traps, eliminates guards, disables security systems. All this is for the sake of those who would have died without him, not noticing a pit or not coping with their maddened brothers exposed to the evil gas. Mudokons are like children: trusting, naive, ready to follow you even into fire. But any wrong move can kill them. They imitate you in literally everything, repeating your steps with frightening accuracy. Therefore, the responsibility is enormous – one wrong decision, and one of them will die. Not through the fault of the enemy, but through yours.
Oddworld is not a story about a hero with a gun, but about a hero with a conscience. Here you do not fight for glory, but try not to become the cause of someone else’s death. This is a game where salvation is not an abstract goal, but a personal mission. And when at the end you look back and see how many lives you were able to save from hell – that is your true victory.
Only real games, no cost – that’s our free steam accounts promise.
Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee Gameplay
Abe is not just a funny character with bulging eyes and an awkward gait. His appearance hides a whole arsenal of skills, thanks to which he not only survives in a harsh world, but also fights for the freedom of his people. He can run, jump, sneak, throw grenades, interact with various mechanisms, turn valves, hide in shelters and communicate with other Mudokons. And not only with words – sometimes you have to push them to action, disperse them or even reason with miasma if they start to panic. But Abe’s most powerful weapon is his ability to penetrate the minds of enemies.

Here’s just a small part of what he can do:
-
Sneak up on enemies and bypass guards
-
Throw grenades and activate traps
-
Give commands to other Mudokons and lead them
-
Take over the minds of opponents and temporarily control them
-
Use elements of the environment to create paths or distractions
At first glance, it seems that with such power, no guards are scary. Possess one of them – and go ahead, shoot the rest, open the passage, it’s simple! But the game does not let you relax. Enemies are not stupid – if they feel that someone is trying to take over their minds, they will immediately start looking for the culprit, and, having found Abe, will open fire without hesitation. Moreover, even if you managed to take control of someone, this does not mean that you can do anything. An enchanted enemy is limited by its functions, and you can’t go far with it – its behavior is still subject to the established framework.
Therefore, each level is like a puzzle. You need to observe, study the behavior of enemies, look for loopholes. Sometimes you can lure someone onto mines, sometimes you can trick them into a force field. Some can be pushed against each other and set against each other, while others are best left alone and tried to slip past without making a sound. It all depends on the situation, and there is simply no universal solution.
For those who played the original Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, these techniques and atmosphere will be familiar – for them, this is a reason to refresh their memories. And for those who are just discovering Abe’s story, it’s time to catch up – the game is already available on PlayStation 4, and will soon appear on other platforms, including PC. Let’s go save the Mudokons!
Updated Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
To be honest, you shouldn’t expect any radical changes in the gameplay – the basis remains true to the original. But still, some things have changed, and these innovations are felt. The most important is the appearance of difficulty levels. Now the player can decide for himself how harsh Abe’s path will be. On an easy level, for example, the hero no longer dies from every unsuccessful step or fall from a small height, which is especially nice for those who just want to enjoy the story and atmosphere without unnecessary stress.
I was also pleased that you can now quickly save – just press the touchpad of the controller on the PS4, and the progress is saved. This is a small thing, but so convenient that it quickly ceases to be unnoticeable. But the controls have been slightly redesigned: for Abe to run, you now need to tilt the analog stick more strongly, instead of holding the trigger. And although this looks logical on paper, in practice this solution often gets in the way, especially in situations where precision is required – for example, when jumping over chasms or trying to slip past mines. You literally feel how the controls start to work against you at the most inopportune moment.
The change in the level structure seems much more significant. Previously, these were separate screens with constant loading — a typical legacy of games of that time. Now everything has changed: the game has turned into a solid, living world without abrupt transitions. The camera has become a little freer — it can deviate, give a little space, open the viewing angle. As a result, the player gets the feeling that he is really in this strange, frightening, but at the same time enchanting world.

The developers did not skimp on the little things. If you stop and look closely at the surroundings, you can notice many details: dilapidated walls, traces of everyday life, remnants of long-past tragedies. All this makes the game’s universe truly alive and convincing. New locations have also been added — there were none at all before. Mudokons are hiding in these small spaces, which can be saved. Now there are 299 of them — 200 more than in the original version. This expands the player’s goals and gives the journey more meaning: you want to explore, search, save, help.
As for the graphics — there is real magic here. It has preserved the spirit of the original, but has found a new breath. The visual style, the same one that fans got acquainted with back in 1997, has been transferred to three-dimensional space with amazing respect and accuracy. The characters are no longer flat sprites — now they are full-fledged 3D models, but so recognizable that you get the feeling: you are looking at something you once saw a long time ago, only now — live. As if childhood memories have finally acquired clear outlines.
And this is the main strength of the game. It remains the same, but it feels deeper, more alive, more mature. And if you were ever among those who worried about Abe and his friends, then this remake will give you not just nostalgia – it will give you a chance to live this story again, with new colors and emotions.
Pros and cons of Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
Has this ever happened to you? When something from childhood seems like a real miracle – a game that is impossible to forget, a fairy tale that you believed in with all your heart. And then you grow up, the years go by, and one day you decide to go back – to be nostalgic, to immerse yourself in the past. But instead of delight, you are met with disappointment. Everything is not as bright, not as interesting as in memory. Memories turned out to be more beautiful than the thing itself. Classics are collapsing against reality – and it’s sad.
But Oddworld is an exception. Seriously. We ourselves did not believe it until we tried it. Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty does not just resurrect an old game – it gives it a second life. Exactly as you remember it: magical, atmospheric, catchy from the first minutes. Only now without technical flaws and the pain of the old camera.

The most important thing is that the gameplay has remained practically untouched. And this is a compliment. Still the same smart levels, where you can’t move forward on autopilot. Here you need to think, calculate the steps, choose the right moment. Such games are almost never made today. Modern platformers often choose simplicity and speed. And Oddworld remains thoughtful, even a little meditative – but that makes it even more catchy.
The graphics have been updated, but the style has remained the same: recognizable, strange, disturbing. This is still the same world of mudokons, in which a trap awaits around every corner, but the light of hope also breaks through the darkness.
What was especially pleasing:
-
The game has not only stood the test of time — it has beaten it. Even after all these years, it feels solid, logical, and well-thought-out
-
The art style has been preserved with incredible respect. Everything looks modern, but at the same time, it is absolutely in the spirit of the original
-
Even more puzzles, interesting situations, and small nuances have been added, for which Oddworld is loved
But there is a fly in the ointment:
-
The controls sometimes seem a little less convenient than in the old version. It lacks a little smoothness. But these are small things, and you quickly get used to them
If you, like us, want to immerse yourself in a real classic that has not been spoiled by time — Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty is worth your attention. This is a rare case when nostalgia does not lie, but on the contrary — it shows how cool our childhood was.

Sometimes the most amazing adventures begin where you least expect them – in a factory, among rusty metal, gears and a dull workshop hum. Abe is just a worker, without ambitions, without much strength… but with a kind heart. One overheard phrase destroys his familiar world: his friends are just raw material for a new delicacy. And now you are not just playing – you are looking for a way to salvation together with Abe, whispering spells, running past spotlights, trying not to breathe loudly, and every step can be your last.
Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee is not a banal “save the world”. This is a soulful, sometimes sad, but infinitely humane adventure. Here, the enemies have a machine gun, and you have only ingenuity and compassion. But this is enough to change everything.
