Gorogoa is the fruit of many years of work by Jason Roberts, who single-handedly realized his dream. It would be a shame if such an unusual and one of the most striking puzzles of our time remains unnoticed by many players.

Gorogoa was first talked about back in 2012. At that time, the game’s author, Jason Roberts, was confident that he could bring the project to release in just a few months. But the deeper he delved into the work, the more new ideas arose, and everything had to be redone. The visual part – almost entirely hand-drawn – changed several times. Some scenes were crossed out completely, others were radically reworked or barely corrected. And yet, one thing remained unchanged: at the center of the game was a puzzle with four tiles that had to be moved to find a solution.
From the first minutes of the game, we see a boy looking out the window. A huge, but mesmerizingly beautiful monster appears on the horizon. In a panic, he turns the pages of his book and suddenly finds a picture in it: people are bringing gifts to this creature. Did he know in advance that the monster would come? Or is it a coincidence? And was he ready for this meeting? The game doesn’t give an answer – much is left to the player’s imagination.
The next shot: the boy looks into the pantry, and the action seems to freeze. The camera can neither be zoomed in nor zoomed out, and you can’t control the hero directly either. One picture of the boy hangs in the corner, and next to it is the roof of a house with a door leading somewhere further. And it is at this moment that the magic of Gorogoa is born. As soon as you guess to move the panel, the image suddenly “merges” with the neighboring one, and the door appears in the right place. The boy goes out onto the roof, although a second ago he was standing in his room.

Then he continues on his way: collecting gifts, wandering through different times and eras, encountering secrets, where each puzzle turns out to be more difficult than the previous one. The first scene with the door is just a warm-up before a series of amazing tasks, and it already becomes clear why the work on the game dragged on for many years.
The main idea of Gorogoa is to show how everything around is connected. Every object can become part of something bigger: what lies on the table, hangs on the wall or lies on the floor suddenly turns into a piece of a new picture if you connect the panels in the right way. The game remains true to this principle until the very end, surprising with its ingenuity and depth. And to give specific examples would be to deprive the future player of the pleasure of discovering everything himself.

Why Gorogoa Puzzles Are So Unique
The most amazing thing about Gorogoa is how thoughtfully its puzzles are designed. You can’t just drag and drop pictures at random and hope for success, especially when you have four panels in front of you and the ability to move the camera. The game is designed in such a way that after a few simple tasks, you seem to “understand its language.” You catch yourself noticing hidden clues faster, connecting objects together, and finding solutions that initially seemed impossible. Those fragments that seemed too confusing suddenly become clear once you understand the internal rules of this world.
At the same time, each new chapter gives fresh and unexpected ways to use familiar mechanics. It’s easy to think of The Witness here – there, too, everything seemed to come down to drawing lines on tablets, but each zone of the island offered a completely new approach to the tasks. Gorogoa is built on a similar principle: with each change of time and space, you are greeted with new ideas, and smooth transitions between scenes turn an ordinary puzzle into something akin to visual magic.

The best comparison for this game is an illustrated book without a single word. The story here is made up of pictures and small “thought clouds” where you can see the experiences of the characters. In the spirit of indie traditions, no one will chew the plot and explain every detail. But this is what makes the story special: everyone thinks it up in their own way, shares impressions with friends or simply enjoys the process, even if they do not understand everything.
You can complain that the game is short, but in fact, its brevity is a plus. If you stretch out such mechanics, it will lose its charm. On average, the passage will take one and a half to two hours, and after the final credits, you will certainly feel a slight feeling of incompleteness and a desire to return again. During this time, the game will not let you get bored for a minute: you admire the stunning illustrations, then rejoice at a small victory over another riddle, then examine the little things, trying to grasp the author’s idea. And it is quite possible that immediately after the first playthrough you will want to start the second – with a new look, to find answers to the remaining questions.
Pros and Cons of Gorogoa – Is It Worth Playing?
It was easy to understand that Gorogoa would become something special even after its first demonstrations. The demo version captivated players, the project collected awards at festivals, attracted the interest of the Indie Fund and eventually received support from Annapurna Interactive. All this foreshadowed high quality – and the game really did not disappoint. Gorogoa feels like a real work of art, which can easily be placed on par with Braid, Inside, Fez and The Witness.

Unique and fresh gameplay;
-
Amazing visual style, completely hand-drawn;
-
