Long before Gord was released, many rushed to list it as a direct competitor to Frostpunk. And the comparison really was obvious: both games combine elements of a city-building strategy and a harsh survival simulator, immerse you in an atmosphere of hopelessness, confront the player with moral dilemmas and offer an original setting based on historical motives. However, the developers from the young Polish studio Covenant.dev, headed by Stan Just, did not follow the path of simply copying the success of their compatriots from 11 bit studios. Instead, they tried to bring something of their own to the genre – from a unique world to fresh gameplay solutions. What came out of this, we will analyze in detail in the review.

Slavic mythology is much less common in video games than the usual set of orcs, elves and dwarves. That is why Gord immediately stands out from the crowd – here, ancient beliefs and legends of the Eastern European lands become not just decorations, but the core of the story and the basis of the gameplay.
The events unfold in the mighty kingdom of Kalantia, as huge as its ruler is ambitious. King Isidor II is a stern and ruthless man, but not without intelligence. He is not used to throwing away valuable people, even if they stumbled. When his adviser Edwin fell into disfavor, ordering the execution of the chief cartographer in the midst of a war (a controversial decision, to put it mildly), Isidor did not send him to the scaffold. Instead, he exiled his subordinate to the outskirts of the country, to the wild lands of Lysatia, as a simple envoy.
Here, among the recently conquered tribes, Edwin is forced to seek a way to forgive the monarch. His companions are the elder Bogdan, a sage with bitter experience, ready to help, but who gives in to the powerful stranger, and the mysterious witch Lynx, an ally by necessity, whose goals are never obvious.

Despite the strategy genre, the creators of Gord paid special attention to the plot. Each hero can hardly be called a cardboard figure – they all live their own lives, although they appear on the screen mainly in cutscenes. Edwin is the personification of petty official treachery, Bogdan is the keeper of the people’s memory, but with a fair amount of fear in his heart, Lynx is the embodiment of cunning and unpredictability. The atmosphere of the world is enhanced by a dark palette. Here, this is not just an artistic style – the earth has survived a catastrophe known as the Great Curse. The angry gods have deprived people of sunlight, and now the change of day and night can only be distinguished by the phases of the moon.
The forests of Lysatiya were already restless, but in the eternal twilight, life has turned into a struggle for survival. A handful of locals, trapped in darkness and fear, must somehow cope with trials where on one side of the scale is Edwin’s cunning, on the other – Bogdan’s wisdom and the magical power of Lynx.

Gord Gameplay
Gord tries to stand out not only with its setting, but also with the way it presents its gameplay. Considering it a regular “urban survival game” like Banished is a big mistake. The developers clearly wanted to do something of their own, something different from the usual representatives of the genre, and they succeeded… although at the cost of a number of controversial decisions that made the process less comfortable than it could have been. For example, construction here is not so simple: key buildings can only be erected within a closed palisade. At the same time, most of the buildings are directly related to the professions of the inhabitants. Want fresh meat? Until there is a hunter’s hut in the village, forget about venison.
The palisade is not there for beauty. Beyond its borders, impenetrable darkness reigns, wild animals and much more sinister creatures roam the forests. Even without a direct threat, the darkness weighs on people, making them nervous. But sitting locked up will not work – resources are hidden behind the walls, without which you cannot survive. You have to set up lighting, send patrols and assign guards to the workers so that they don’t become easy prey.

Dangers lurk not only outside. The sanity indicator plays an important role – something like an analogue of stress from Darkest Dungeon or Dwarf Fortress. Darkness, illness, hunger, injuries and other troubles slowly destroy the psyche. A drop in sanity can turn into a “spiritual illness”: a peasant will start stealing, attacking neighbors or even break down and run away into the thicket, where he will almost certainly die.
The situation is also affected by the average level of sanity of the entire village – the speed of the appearance of children depends on it. Little ones will not immediately get into the ranks, but they can help adults and learn skills. By the way, children can also be… sacrificed here. No, no, it does not come to human sacrifices, although special monsters live in the forests, which are called misfortunes. Each plague is unique, lives in its own wilderness and demands a victim – sometimes an item, sometimes a rare resource, and sometimes even a child. Ignoring the demands results in punishment: an epidemic, a decline in resources, or an attack by powerful enemies. You can try to kill the plague, but this is a serious test – it has considerable strength.
There is another important resource – faith. It accumulates when residents pray in temples or sanctuaries (and here children will also come in handy). Faith can be spent on spells – both combat and auxiliary: acceleration, inspiration, protection. Their use sometimes becomes decisive when a village is in trouble.
Microcontrol in Gord
It seems that the authors’ desire to stand out at any cost often turns against the game itself. In the case of Gord, this manifests itself in three main problems: cumbersome controls, excessive microcontrol, and an overly gloomy, eye-tiring picture. Each of these problems individually might seem bearable, but together they turn the process into a series of irritating moments.
The darkness, which is supposed to create an atmosphere of a dangerous forest and convey the fear of its inhabitants, ends up working against the player. When you have to peer into the black thicket in search of at least some details, your eyes quickly get tired – and even special illumination of objects does not help much.
You will not be able to complete the game by completely avoiding exploring the outskirts – important resources or objects that cannot be ignored are often hidden there. But subordinates act extremely passively: automation is almost absent. Yes, you can order residents to collect materials or patrol the territory, and they will carry out the task themselves. However, everything else – battles, reconnaissance, rest, treatment – requires personal intervention. And all this through an inconvenient interface that only adds to the problems.

For example, when selecting a character, a panel with his characteristics pops up on half the screen – almost useless and also overlapping the mini-map. Why can’t the peasants heal themselves, rest, or at least gather in the center of the village during an attack? Instead, each such action must be set manually, risking forgetting scouts in the thicket or missing a monster raid.
The decision to force the player to rebuild a settlement from scratch in each new chapter of the campaign is also unsuccessful. The monotonous repetition of the same steps at the start quickly becomes boring. And there is no need to talk about technical flaws – it seems that the developers simply forgot about any optimization.
Is Gord worth playing?
Gord, despite all its shortcomings, still cannot be called a project that is worth passing by. Yes, the controls here leave much to be desired, and constant microcontrol can be tiring, but if you endure the first couple of hours and understand the nuances of the mechanics, then the rough edges no longer seem critical. But you will find a fascinating story in an Old Slavic setting, rare for games, for which the campaign is definitely worth completing.

But outside the plot, Gord is not so impressive. Despite a wide choice of settings when starting a mission on a separate map, the strategy comes out too simple, and the settlers outside the campaign do not inspire much sympathy. There are no deep tactics and full immersion here – outside the storyline, it is worth playing only for the atmosphere and setting.
