From the very first minutes, Fortified makes you feel like you’ve seen it all before – but that only adds to the charm. After a lively introductory video, in the spirit of old sci-fi films from the 50s, where Martians attack Earth, you are faced with a choice of one of four heroes. There is a captain in military uniform, a scientist with a jetpack, a representative of the secret service in a formal suit, and a charming astronaut with the smile of a Hollywood star.

As soon as you make your choice, you’re straight to the battlefield. Your task is to protect the nuclear missiles at any cost while they are preparing to launch. This is not just defense, but a real battle for the future of humanity. Between waves of alien attacks, you will build fortifications, place turrets and plan where to expect the next onslaught. All this is in an atmosphere of retro sci-fi, where each battle is like an episode from an old black-and-white TV show, only with a much greater dose of action.

If you take a closer look, it becomes obvious: there is a lot in common between the games Robot Entertainment and Clapfoot. The scheme is familiar – the player has to defend against endless waves of enemies that fall out of portals and inexorably move towards their goal. Every second is worth its weight in gold, and the slightest mistake can result in defeat. But the atmosphere here is completely different. Instead of frivolous fantasy with orcs and humor – a strict, almost old-fashioned sci-fi world, where the main threat is robotic invaders from Mars.

For each successfully completed battle, characters receive experience – a standard, but still enjoyable way of leveling up. These points allow you to open new types of weapons, improve defensive installations and experiment with tactics. Everything is intuitive and without unnecessary complications: set up a turret, load the guns, get ready for an attack.

But after a few missions, you understand: Fortified is not just another tower defense with a pleasant retro style. Despite the visual simplicity and comic shell, the game knows how to throw up surprises. Even on the average difficulty level, the enemies do not let you relax. They may not be the smartest, but they act decisively and often in numbers. And if you do not pay due attention to preparation, choose the wrong equipment before the start of the mission or ignore alarm signals, the consequences will not take long to come.

Make a couple of mistakes – and your line of defense will crumble like a house of cards. The enemy will rush through seemingly reliable obstacles and reach the key point in a matter of seconds. Especially if you, as often happens, ignore the minimap in the upper right corner – and this is where the whole picture of the battle is visible. Fortified requires attention, reaction and strategic thinking, not forgiving thoughtless decisions. And this makes it much deeper than it may seem at first glance.

Why Fortified is a team defense with a real challenge

The first thing Fortified quickly and harshly teaches any player is to think ahead. Here you won’t be able to mindlessly rush into battle, hoping to fight back in close combat, as often happened in Orcs Must Die!. Enemies in Fortified behave differently: small fry are constantly underfoot, preventing movement and can unexpectedly cause a lot of damage if you let them get too close. Therefore, it is better to deal with them from a distance, before they reach the center of the map. But larger opponents are a separate tactical task. You can’t just stop them on the fly. They need to be slowed down, weakened, kept at a distance – all so that your guns, turrets and squads of soldiers have time to properly “chew” their thick armor.

A special conversation – boss battles. These giants are almost invulnerable alone. Damage to them is slow, attacks are powerful, and there is never enough time. And if you are alone, without support, then the outcome of such a clash is almost always obvious: you will quickly collapse, and the base will follow you. Therefore, the logical solution comes by itself – urgently look for partners and switch to co-op. Two, three, or better yet, four – here the dynamics of the battle are different, and the chances of winning are noticeably higher.

The second important truth that you need to accept if you start playing Fortified: this game is created with the expectation of co-play. Yes, formally there is a campaign here – but you can’t call it a full-fledged story. At best, it is a set of 12 maps, which are slightly glued together by motivational videos about the heroic resistance of earthlings to the alien threat. Each mission is just a battlefield, an arena on which you build defenses and repel waves of enemies. No dialogues, characters, development of events – everything is as utilitarian as possible.

And while the game is forgiving – up to the fifth or sixth mission – you can play alone. But then the situation changes dramatically. The Martians start attacking from different directions at the same time. Moreover, the routes do not intersect, so you need to use a separate approach to each one. No tricks in the spirit of “I’ll set up traps here, and then I’ll run there myself” will work anymore. Firstly, there are many times more opponents, and neither the towers nor the troops can hold back the onslaught. Secondly, you simply physically cannot be everywhere at once alone. Yes, there is a respawn system, but it is almost useless: while you are reviving, the aliens easily destroy the main building – and you have to start the level over.

At some later stages, the situation becomes especially acute when you have to defend two or even three positions at the same time. This is where the whole essence of Fortified comes into play – it is a team game. Only well-coordinated interaction, distribution of roles and support for each other give a chance to win.

There is also an additional mode – Invasion. It stands out a little from the general structure and is a survival on three small maps, where you are attacked by endless waves of enemies. Everything would be fine, but random modifiers come into play. They can either simplify or greatly complicate the passage, changing the balance of the game literally on the fly. For example:

• strengthen or weaken the player’s character;
• increase or decrease enemy damage;
• change the durability of defensive structures;
• limit the number of buildings;
• even change the behavior of the base itself.

And considering that the maps themselves are cramped, there is almost no room for maneuver and placing traps – everything needs to be calculated in advance. A positioning error can cost you a loss already on the first waves.

In general, Fortified is not about the plot, but about dynamics, coordination and the ability to adapt. If you like to pump up your reaction, experiment with buildings and work in a team – this is for you. But loners will have a hard time here, especially closer to the end.

How Fortified plays out in multiplayer

Fortified truly shines when you play not alone, but in a company. It is in the network mode that it sheds its modest shell and turns into a frantic, sometimes crazy battle, where not just anything, but the future of humanity is at stake. Everything that may seem monotonous in a solo game – placing turrets, shooting down enemies wave after wave – comes to life and is filled with meaning here. Because there are those nearby who will cover, save, help you survive. Fortified seems to be specially created for co-op: the mechanics push players to joint strategy, mutual assistance and improvisation on the fly.

No plan can withstand the onslaught of chaos, into which the best moments of the game sometimes slide. Plasma volleys from giant robots tear the air, turrets one after another are disconnected from energy impulses, flying saucers and annoying drones rain down from the sky on your heads, and suddenly … he appears – the juggernaut. Huge as a skyscraper, slowly but inexorably striding forward. Its appearance is no longer just a challenge, it is an event that can make even the most experienced players freeze. To defeat it means to play in a coordinated manner, with intelligence and desperate courage. And if you play with friends – get ready, this is a completely different level of emotions. You will yell at each other in the voice chat, laugh, swear, coordinate in a panic and celebrate victories with delight. Such moments are unforgettable and turn the game into a real team blockbuster, where each participant is irreplaceable.

The developers from Clapfoot seem to have put their soul into the game. And if they continue to support the project with updates or even release free DLC – Fortified has every chance of acquiring a stable, loyal community. Even now, despite rather modest sales, you can still find those online who will gladly accept you into the team. This is a rare case when a small but passionate community keeps the project afloat – and does it with pleasure.

Especially against the background of the lack of worthy alternatives. The same Orcs Must Die! 2, which is often referenced in conversations, has not looked fresh for a long time.
