Well, how else to explain their almost sadistic pleasure in the suffering of players? Remember how Crowley proudly said that he designed the M25 highway, which became the source of endless traffic jams and motorists’ rage. It seems that IronOak Games made a similar deal with the underworld: this is the only way to explain how they managed to create such cruel, unfair, but at the same time damn exciting games.
The games of this studio skillfully play on the strings of excitement: you break ahead, are almost celebrating victory – and then fate strikes. Losing is painful, offensive. You want to turn everything off to hell … But only a minute passes – and here you are again, in the same place, with a new game and a stupid hope: “Well, this time I will definitely get lucky.” And so on and so forth. Like a plan written by someone for slow emotional destruction. But the strangest thing is that you like it. Even if it reminds you of emotional swings, from which your head is noisy, and anger and delight fight in your heart.
My acquaintance with the first For The King began in early access. Then the game was raw, monstrously unbalanced and brought nothing but disappointment. I was angry, wrote angry reviews and abandoned it for many months. And then I came back – and could not stop. Solo, in company, with or without DLC – each game brought unique emotions, regardless of the outcome. When the developers announced the sequel, I was already preparing for a new round of madness. And for good reason: For The King II really became better in everything – deeper, more diverse, angrier. But at the same time it remained just as insidious and unbearably beautiful. But history took a different path: Queen Rosamon, once wise and fair, could not stand the test of power. She became what she once fought against – a ruthless tyrant. Your adventure begins with choosing a class. In addition to familiar archetypes such as a blacksmith, hunter, herbalist, and scholar, a new character is now available – a shepherd boy. The scientist and herbalist brilliantly cope with tasks that require intelligence – be it the use of books or magic staffs. The hunter stands out for his speed and combat reaction, which makes him an excellent shooter and fighter with a polearm. Skills are important not only in combat, but also in exploring the world: for example, a blacksmith or a woodcutter will easily cope with a strength test, and it is logical to trust a highly lucky character with a card game.
In addition, skills directly affect interaction with objects: a hunter, for example, is more likely to break open a locked door, and a scientist will create a more powerful portal for teleportation. Some abilities depend not on equipment, but on the class itself. Thus, the scientist has a chance at the end of each turn to restore a point of concentration – a resource that allows you to strengthen throws and pass checks with a higher probability of success. The healer can find a rare healing plant, and the hunter can move more squares per turn thanks to the “Surge of Strength” ability.

Where does the story and first mission start in For the King II
The story begins in the city. It is here that the first serious task unfolds – to save the imprisoned Rozomon rebels and breathe life into the nascent resistance. On the way, the heroes will meet both new allies and old friends. Following my habit, I immediately went to explore the city and, without wasting time, took the first task from the notice board – counting on a quick leveling and useful loot. In the first part of the game, any delay or wrong choice could result in failure, so by inertia I again began to play at maximum concentration.
Seeing a tempting weapon in the list of rewards, I rushed without hesitation to the enemy camp, where not only a giant jelly cube was waiting for me, but also his friendly aggressive comrades. My team had just started their journey and had a zero level, while the enemies were a cut above. The result was a quick and painful death for the entire party. The game honestly congratulated me on the first failure. I couldn’t believe what had happened, restarted the campaign and went down the same road again – with the same outcome.
Then it dawned on me: maybe it wasn’t the game after all? I exhaled, exited the “mad onslaught” mode and took a closer look at the interface. Unlike the previous part, there is no longer an ominous timer accumulating chaos that could lead to the death of the entire team. There is also no countdown to the capture of the next stronghold of corruption. No one forced me to rush at the enemies at the very beginning – it was purely my initiative. And for haste, as we know, life punishes quickly.

Nevertheless, a certain time limit is still present – but now it is logically integrated into the plot. The timer is tied to key tasks and is updated if you complete them on time. At the top of the screen there is a scale with icons: when there are four of them – failure, and the campaign will end. At the first stage of the storyline, you urgently need to free the rebel from prison. The scale will then warn of planned attacks by the city guard, and then it will begin to tick towards the wrath of the robber king – if you delay it for too long.
No one forbids you to take quests from the very beginning – you just shouldn’t rush to complete them right away. You are given a decent number of turns to complete the tasks, so there is time to calmly level up on less dangerous opponents – like crows, goblins and wolves, who tend to set up ambushes in the most unexpected places. Don’t forget about the main storyline: if the level of the task matches the level of your team, you can take a risk. But if it is more difficult, it is better to wait a little with the exploits, accumulate experience and keep an eye on the time.
Predicting how far your squad can advance in a turn is not an easy task. The number of steps depends on the dice roll at the beginning of the turn and can change due to various conditions. For example, in good weather you can go a little further than usual, but in the rain or in the swamps, some of the cells on the map will be blocked. As a result, the team can unpredictably crawl in different directions, completely relying on the whims of randomness.

Splitting up a squad is far from the best idea. Only those who actually participate in the battle gain experience, and in battle, a comrade’s shoulder will definitely not be superfluous. Although there are moments when you have to make desperate decisions: someone teleports across half the map using a scroll to save a teammate, another sells the last of his things to buy a ship and get to his comrades who were trapped after a kraken attack and the loss of the boat.
Fights can be started in different ways. Sometimes it makes sense to break in abruptly, “on foot”, and sometimes it is better to try to set up an ambush – if possible, you can seize the initiative and defeat the enemy in parts while his allies are outside the support zone. But it is not that simple: an ambush may not work, and then you risk starting a fight in very unfavorable conditions, with a bad turn order and noticeable discomfort.
How does the turn-based combat system work?
Before each battle, the game determines the order of turns — and here everything is decided by the speed parameter, which can be compared to the initiative from D&D. The higher the speed, the earlier you go. True, this can be influenced: allies can be sped up, enemies can be slowed down. As a result, tactical space is already at the start. Each fighter has his own set of characteristics, and they play a key role. Under the portraits of the characters, you can see the attack power (whether magical or physical), protection from different types of damage (physical and magical separately), as well as evasion — it shows how deftly the character evades blows if the enemy does not make an ideal throw. These parameters are not static — they are increased with the help of various items: amulets, rings, or even candies, which permanently strengthen the heroes.
The turn-based combat system itself has hardly changed since the first part — old-timers will immediately feel at home. Some things are done almost automatically: it is wiser to attack mages with swords, and it is better to first deprive well-armored opponents of protection. And do not forget about control: slow down the most dangerous enemies, stun them, prevent them from making throws, inflicting the “Shock” status. But this is not the end of the acquaintance – new mechanics have been added that really refresh the gameplay. For example, now the battle takes place on a grid, where you can place your heroes in two rows. And, most importantly, they do not stand like pillars – everyone can spend an additional action to move. This already opens up a bunch of interesting solutions.

A system of surface damage has also appeared: if the cell under the hero catches fire, it is better to retreat, otherwise you will be fried. Characters with a shield can now cover allies standing behind from pinpoint strikes. However, the shield will not help against area damage. Melee fighters (those same “melee”) can now attack only from the front line, but the guys in the background get a bonus to evasion – a small 5%, but at a critical moment this can decide the outcome of the turn.
And also – there is an opportunity to throw enemies. Literally. Special weapons allow you to throw an opponent, pull him out of cover or expose him to an area spell. There are a lot of combinations. For example, your archer can throw an enemy fighter back, and then your warrior will run up, who will impose a stunning effect – now this enemy will not be able to either move forward or hit. That’s it – the most dangerous enemy on the field is incapacitated. Isn’t it an alternative to stunning from the original?
But such tricks require attention and precise calculation. Otherwise, you will have to hope for luck. And given the local difficulty level and capricious randomness, each battle is not just a battle, but a full-fledged emotional carousel. Both victories and defeats are felt especially keenly here. Lost? You can blame your friend and laugh. Win? The joy is real – deserved. It is ideal to go through all this with friends: only they will understand your pain, only they will sincerely rejoice for you (or joke, of course), and only with them an accidental failure turns into a funny story that you want to tell again.
Best Weapons and Talismans in For the King II
After a violent fight with half of the local fauna, completing a couple of strange but interesting side quests and spending all your hard-earned coins on a lady’s beard with ginseng in the first village, you finally get the chance to get down to the story. The path promises to be eventful: from the serene plains to dark thickets, slimy swamps, musty sewers and further, to the basement of Hildebrant – the very one that still brings nightmares. Through noisy taverns, dangerous dungeons and again – to the open sea, where a meeting with a kraken awaits. All this is a real adventure, full of surprises and bright moments.

Despite the fact that the in-game economy suffers from considerable inflation (prices are growing by leaps and bounds), rewards for quests and victories in battle have become more generous compared to the first part. By the end of the first chapter, I had cleared out all the shops, filling my backpack with potions, armor, and other useful things. Did it help me survive? Alas, not really. And yet, it was my third attempt to complete the game that turned out to be the longest and, perhaps, the most successful. And all thanks to the absolutely charming clown hammer for the hunter – a weapon whose effectiveness directly depends on luck. I didn’t lose my head: I went around the local shops, bought a talisman in the form of a cat (+20 to luck!) and even took the time to pray at a mysterious statue to increase my concentration. And it seems that fate has finally begun to smile on me.
Pros and Cons of For The King II: Is the Sequel Worth Playing?
Many who have already tried For The King II, in their reviews note that this part seems more difficult than the original. But to be honest, I think that this is not entirely true. Yes, it has become more difficult to become that very “imbalanced wunderwaffe” — that is, a character who is capable of literally everything and everyone. But, knowing the ingenuity of the players, I am sure that very soon there will be craftsmen who will find new strategies and loopholes to arrange solo runs, as it was in the first part.
What has actually changed? The game has added a battle grid and elemental damage depending on the position on the map, and now you also have pets — allies, but very wayward and unpredictable. These innovations are not about complication, but rather about expanding possibilities. They make each battle more tactical and interesting, adding variety that is immediately felt. And of course, cruel randomness still reigns here – it sometimes knocks down the entire party in an instant, but sometimes unexpectedly plays along with you, turning the tide of battle in your favor.

There are also a number of changes that, on the contrary, make life a little easier. For example, enemies sometimes behave quite strangely: they can stubbornly stand on cells that are burning, not trying to leave, or suddenly run out from behind their own shield bearers. This behavior may seem illogical, but on the other hand, it gives the player additional chances and opportunities. Resources in the game are now collected much more quickly, which relieves some of the tension and allows you to experiment with tactics more often. Also, you no longer need to painfully search for quests with the task “Chaos -1”, which in the first part was almost an eternal headache.
However, each concession has its price. The main “balancing” moment is the disappearance of the universal pipe for smoking herbs, which was previously in the healer’s arsenal. In the first part, this item allowed you to heal the entire party with an incredible number of potions and gave the healer the status of an invulnerable hero. Now the tubes are disposable consumables that only affect one character, and not the entire team at once. However, the herbalist can still heal allies outside of combat, and in battles, his main task is to remove negative effects, without wasting precious herbs. This seriously changes the tactical component and forces you to think ahead.

As a result, the game has hardly become more difficult, but it has definitely become deeper and more cunning. For The King II is still the same insidious board game in a digital format that skillfully plays with your patience and nerves. It still makes you rush through endless dungeons with a bunch of rooms, where sometimes there is not even a single store to heal or buy the necessary items. The game is not kind, regularly breaks your plans and throws in unexpected situations where no strategy guarantees an easy victory. Each run is a unique experience with new difficulties and surprises. And that is what we, true fans and even a little masochists, appreciate it for.
