After Dawko mastered the 50/20 mode, one of the most difficult challenges in the history of Five Nights at Freddy’s, fans began to eagerly await his interview with Scott Cawthon, the creator of the franchise. And on August 8, 2018, it was released. In this conversation, Scott shared not only his thoughts on the previous parts of the series, but also talked about what awaits fans in the future.
One of the main announcements was the mention of a VR project for FNaF. Scott said that a third-party studio was developing it, the name of which he did not yet specify at the time. According to him, the team showed him a demo version of the first part of FNaF, completely transferred to virtual reality. The demo impressed him so much that he suggested the studio go further – to create VR remakes of all the original games in the series. This format, according to Scott, can give players a completely new level of immersion and fear.

And on August 19, Cawthon updated his blog post dedicated to new FNaF projects. This time, he revealed more details. For example, it became known that the VR game is being developed by Steel Wool, a studio previously known only for small projects in the field of virtual reality. Despite their relatively modest experience, Scott entrusted this team with one of the most important tasks – to rethink FNaF in the VR space.
He also mentioned that the future game will feature episodes inspired by Sister Location – in particular, moments when the player had to fix Funtime Freddy, trying not to give away his presence. These tense scenes promised to be even more frightening in virtual reality, where every sound and movement is literally felt on the skin.

Gameplay Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted
First of all, it is worth noting that the engine has been completely updated in the new version of the game. Now the project runs on Unreal Engine 4, which paved the way to full-fledged virtual reality and made the visual part much more expressive. The graphics have noticeably improved: although the animatronics have lost their previous hyper-detail, they have become more voluminous and realistic. This is not just a cosmetic improvement – now their presence is felt much more strongly, especially when you are in the same virtual room with them. The goal is obvious: to immerse the player in a familiar world with their head and scare them in a new way. Everything that used to scare you on a flat screen now comes to life in 360-degree format. Here you are not just watching – you really find yourself inside the game, where every creak and movement is felt almost physically.
The central menu with all available segments is displayed on the monitor in front of the player. There are only seven of them, and each is accompanied by a small humorous illustration with Helpy – the signature mascot, who has long been part of the FNaF universe. A nice feature is that you can complete the levels in any order, which gives you some freedom and allows you to move at your own pace. There is a special lever next to the main monitor that you can use to activate the ultraviolet mode. This is essentially a more difficult version of the standard tests. The same levels, but with tougher conditions, a smaller margin for error, and more pressure. Suitable for those who want to not just play, but really test themselves.

One of the segments recreates the legendary gameplay from the first part of Five Nights at Freddy’s. Everything is classic here: you need to hold out in the office until 6 am, trying not to become a victim of Freddy and his “friends”. Calls from Von Gai — the same voice that we heard in the original — return unchanged, causing nostalgia in long-time fans of the series. As part of this mode, you will have to go through four nights. On the first, you will encounter only Bonnie and Chica. Starting from the second, Foxy is activated, and by the third night, Freddy himself enters the game. Everything is built as in the original game, only now you are not just watching the events, but are literally inside what is happening.
There are also important differences from the classic version. The tablet now lies right in front of you on the table – you do not need to pick it up or close it. In addition, it no longer consumes energy when used, which greatly changes the dynamics. The energy meter is now located on a separate screen, which makes resource control more convenient and visual. The image from the security cameras is transmitted to a small monitor located behind the tablet. The video is now black and white, with characteristic interference – exactly like the recordings from surveillance cameras from the 90s. This quality not only creates the right atmosphere, but also fits perfectly into the canonical timeline of FNaF events.
What is especially impressive is that you can now see how the animatronics really move between rooms. They no longer teleport, as they did before, but step by step move towards you. This adds realism and builds fear, because you literally see the threat approaching. When the animatronic approaches the door, its dimensions in VR are felt almost physically. And at this moment you begin to really worry. You need to close the door not just in time, but exactly at the moment when the enemy turns his head towards the passage. A mistake – and you are no longer safe.
What do purple cassettes give in the game and how to collect them
During the game, in addition to the standard Faz-tokens, you can also find something more mysterious on the levels – purple cassettes. There are sixteen of them, and each of them brings you closer to a strange and frightening ending.
As soon as you pick up the first cassette, the outlines of the Yellow Rabbit begin to appear in the main menu, near the dark passage on the right. At first, it is barely visible – like a shadow at the edge of vision. But with each new cassette, this creature becomes closer and more visible. Gradually, its silhouette takes on features, as if materializing before your eyes. It waves its hand to the main character and says a single word in a distorted, anxious voice: “Hello.”
You can not only collect cassettes, but also listen to them. To do this, go to the Prize Corner. There, on the top shelf, there is a record player. Knock it down with a ball, and it will become available from the main menu – but only in ultraviolet mode.

Clicking on the record player will take you to a hidden room. It is empty, dark, and gloomy. The only furniture is a table in the center and a shelf with tapes. To your right is the record player. Here you can listen to each recording. All of them belong to a girl named Tape Girl, a quality control specialist. In her monologues, she shares disturbing facts about the development of the game, its strange features, and what went wrong. These tapes are not just stories. They give hints about hidden mechanics and what is really happening behind the scenes of the project.
When you collect all 16 recordings, the final shift will occur. In the main menu, right behind the monitor, the Yellow Rabbit will appear again – now fully formed. This is Glitchtrap. He slowly raises his hand, and it becomes clear: he is trying to break out of the game. If the player ignores the instructions on tape 16 at this point, an irreversible process begins. Glitchtrap takes over the player’s body, and the beta tester – the main character – is locked inside the game. Forever.
However, there is another way. If you follow Tape Girl’s instructions to the end, you will end up in a mysterious room. There is almost nothing in it, except for a giant metal door. Bloody handprints are visible on it – as if someone was trying to break out … or, on the contrary, to prevent what is inside from leaving.
Why Help Wanted Was a Successful FNaF Reboot
Ports of Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted to other platforms began at the end of 2020 — the developers sought to expand the audience and make the game accessible not only to owners of VR devices. The first in line was the mobile version for Android and iOS.
The port to smartphones, of course, required simplification. Players immediately noticed: in the mobile version, you couldn’t look back, which greatly affected the atmosphere. But most importantly, all mentions of Glitchtrap completely disappeared from the game. No tapes, no endings, no mode inspired by FNaF 3. As if the sinister virus had really escaped from the game world and was hiding on the sidelines. But it was the mobile edition that received a unique thing that no other version had — the Princess Quest mini-game. This small but bright adventure unexpectedly wove into the overall story and gave players another reason to immerse themselves in the lore.

Later in November, Help Wanted was released on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. These versions were virtually identical to the original PC version and the PlayStation VR edition, which was a boon for those who wanted the full experience without a VR headset.

The most important and long-awaited was the Non-VR mode. It allowed you to play the game on a computer or console without the need to use a virtual reality headset. This significantly expanded the circle of players and helped many get acquainted with the project without spending money on expensive equipment.
The game quickly became a hit. Already in the first days of sales, Help Wanted demonstrated fantastic numbers. It quickly rose to the top of Steam and became the best-selling VR game on the platform. Player reviews were almost unanimous: “Very positive.” On Metacritic, the average score was 81. Critic Jordan DeVore from Destructoid gave it 9 out of 10 and noted that this is one of the best implementations of FNaF in all its frightening splendor. The Multiplayer.it publication gave the game 7/10, but also emphasized that the atmosphere and tension created by virtual reality take the franchise to a new level.

Fans accepted the game with particular enthusiasm. For many, it was a return to the roots: to those very first games, where every sound, every creak of the floor, and every approach of the heavy footsteps of the animatronics made the heart skip a beat. The appearance of Glitchtrap was a real sensation – the new antagonist looked no less creepy than the familiar Freddy, Foxy and company. At the same time, his digital nature, viral character and connection with the player gave a special touch of paranoia and intrigue.
Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted is not just a sequel. It is a reboot. The game says directly: everything that came before is a game within a game. Reality, as we knew it, is distorted. This step became a powerful plot twist and opened the doors to a new arc, full of understatements, riddles and codes. It is this feeling – that you are playing not just a horror game, but a part of something bigger, something with shadows, secrets and meta-commentary – that hooked many players.
For Steel Wool, this project was the first such ambitious challenge. The team is small, there is little experience on such a scale, but the result exceeded expectations. They proved that even a small studio can breathe new life into a cult series. And they have an even more serious task ahead – the next project in the FNaF universe, much larger and darker.
