Ensrouded burst into early access at the very end of January — and immediately attracted the eyes of the players. In the popularity rating on Steam, it was surpassed only by the phenomenal Palworld, but even the second place brought the project more than 2 million players in the first month. However, something else is much more important: the developers did not rest on their laurels. February was spent actively working on the game — two major updates were released, at the beginning and at the end of the month, and both significantly changed the project. We cleaned up the technical roughness, adjusted the balance, revised the logic of the appearance of monsters and redesigned the arrangement of key objects on the map.
I myself have spent this whole month in the world of Ensrouded, watching how it is changing. And now that the game has become noticeably more stable and interesting, I want to tell you what it is today — even if the status of the early version has not gone away.

Enshrouded Free Steam Account
First of all, it is worth dispelling the main misconception: Enshrouded is not really about survival. Despite the fact that the game is often called a “survivalist”, you can’t call it truly harsh. It is much softer and more friendly to the player than the titans of the genre. Of course, many compare it to Valheim, but this comparison is not entirely accurate and, frankly, a little confusing.
In Valheim, for example, after half an hour you are already being killed by frost, a falling tree and a logical riddle in the style of “how to build a roof if without a roof you can’t put up a workbench, and without a workbench you can’t build a roof?” Not to mention the fact that you have to navigate the world by talking to a crow and inscriptions on stones. Or take Sons of the Forest – there the first minutes of the game are marked by confusion: in front of you is a notebook with incomprehensible schemes and a silent partner who himself does not understand anything.

Against this background, Enshrouded almost looks like a caring guide. Here, no one makes you suffer from hunger, freeze, or frantically look for shelter from the weather (and there is no weather as such). From the very first minutes, the game takes you by the hand: look, go there, put up the Altar of Flame. No complicated constructions are needed – just find five stones, which are abundant around. This altar will clear the area of the Shroud (more on that later) and will become your resurrection point, which can be placed anywhere. Over time, it can be improved – and your hero will become stronger, and the number of possible revival points will increase.
And then a leisurely, almost cozy adventure begins. You are gently guided: “there, in the ruins, a blacksmith is hidden – help him”, then “go here, find resources”, then “here you can find a carpenter, an alchemist and other craftsmen.” Everyone has their own requests, their own tools, their own crafts. Yes, they all need a roof over their heads, but no one requires you to build a grandiose base – it is enough to put up the simplest walls and a roof to keep them happy.
Yes, there are plenty of opportunities for creativity in construction. If you want, build a house out of wood, or out of stone, add stairs, benches, fireplaces, tables, decorations and other atmospheric little things. And this is not just “for show” – thanks to the voxel system, you can literally mold the world to suit yourself: level the ground, dig holes (by the way, soil is really needed for crafting here), make passages through walls or rocks with a pickaxe. Sometimes chests or even characters associated with quests are hidden behind such obstacles. And this is already a little intriguing. But, alas, the enthusiasm quickly fades. The interface for construction is as if specially created to get tired of it. It is much easier to just stick a large hut and settle artisans in it – the job is done. And at the very beginning, you don’t even have to bother: next to the first ruins, they leave you a spacious tent. Put a blacksmith there and the camp is ready. Beautiful.

The construction itself, oddly enough, does not feel necessary. It is more like another item on the task list: “Build a base – get a bonus.” No cold, no rain, no snowstorms. And even enemies do not bother you – neither creatures from the fog, nor real players. But there is a co-op here – up to 16 people. And if you get together with friends and start building something epic together, it can really drag you in. But let’s be honest: in Enshrouded, building is more fun than a necessity.

Stamina and inventory in Enshrouded
Enshrouded has enough game conventions that sometimes make you scratch your head. It seems like you can build a whole mansion, even a palace, but with an ordinary capacious chest – trouble. Space in the inventory is limited, and more and more junk accumulates. And instead of putting everything in one big box, you have to place an entire army of small chests around the base. Only after building one of them and having the necessary resources does the opportunity to create a special magic warehouse open up. This one really makes life easier: resources from there are available from any point of the base – you no longer need to carry everything on yourself.
But the main “bottleneck” is related to endurance. It is spent on literally everything – strikes, running, dodging – and at the same time it is restored slowly, especially in the midst of battles. To somehow compensate for its rapid expenditure, you have to use everything that gives bonuses: put on special armor, drink water, cook suitable food. By the way, food here is more of a buff to the characteristics and a way to restore health than a cure for hunger. The character, characteristically, never complains about a growling stomach.

Rest in the game is not an empty formality, but a real source of strength. Lying down on a bed or sitting by the fire under the roof is not just about the atmosphere. If you add a little coziness around – a table, a carpet, a fireplace – the effect of rest will increase. And with it will come a powerful bonus to endurance and its regeneration. And, indeed, it is nice when something beautiful turns out to be useful.
Therefore, you should not neglect the decor. Especially since there are enough dilapidated huts and abandoned tents around the world where you can catch your breath. The main thing is not to forget to rest. Especially before heavy battles or before forays into areas absorbed by the Shroud. It was for this that the endurance system was invented – so that each of your decisions had weight.
The Shroud Mechanic in Enshrouded
The main threat and, at the same time, the basis of the plot in Enshrouded is the Shroud. According to legend, once upon a time in Embervale they overdid it with magic, and the result was catastrophic: a suffocating fog spread across the world, infecting all living things and turning the once flourishing lands into gloomy wastelands. We play as the only one who can enter these deadly zones. But even the hero has a limit.
Immersion in the Shroud is a strictly timed matter: 5-7 minutes at most, and the timer is inexorably ticking. Yes, there are consumables that slightly extend your stay in the fog, but each time it is a race for survival. You need to have time: collect rare resources, complete the quest, loot the chests – and get out of there before death catches up. And death is fast and merciless here: if you don’t get out in time, you die, losing almost everything. At least you can return for the dropped loot – if you get to your tombstone, everything that was lost can be picked up. And even if you die again on the way, the things will not disappear. True, sometimes three or four such “graves” accumulate on the map – a picturesque metaphor for your attempts to be a hero.
And yet, it is the Shroud that is the little that really works as an element of survival in Enshrouded. Getting into a fog-shrouded area means experiencing a pure adrenaline rush. Time is running out, enemies are aggressive and crawling from all sides, weapons quickly break, and the rested hero suddenly suffocates and runs out of strength again. You can’t escape by teleporting – there is only one way: back on foot, through the chaos, until you find the exit. And in the fog, if anything, orientation is a disaster.

There are also the Red Shroud zones – it’s better not to even look there: death comes instantly. Some of these “red” areas disappear after the story upgrade of the Altar of Flame, but the foggy lands never become completely safe. Sometimes there are barely noticeable deadly areas, similar to hot rivers – and as soon as you step into them, hello, loading. I lost my entire inventory on this several times – and at the same time, it seems, I scared the cat more than myself: the swearing broke out automatically.
You will have to visit the Shroud regularly — and it is not only because of the interest in the foggy lands. Many story quests are directly related to these dangerous places, and some require going through the Shroud to get to the desired goal. In addition, it is here that you can get rare resources needed to improve the Altar of Flame. And it is worth doing this not only for the sake of the plot — each upgrade of the Altar gives a noticeable increase to the character’s characteristics and allows you to withstand the effects of the fog itself longer.
Of particular interest in these zones are the Elixir Wells. Here, the player will have to find a giant rotten tree — the source of the infection — and destroy it, fighting off aggressive enemies and mini-bosses. If you succeed, the infected area is cleared, and as a reward you receive impressive experience and useful skill points.
Combat system and character leveling in Enshrouded
Leveling up a hero in Enshrouded is not just a nice addition, but the basis of the gameplay. Here, every piece of clothing and every upgrade matters. Armor and weapons can be crafted manually, and each craftsman offers their own options – someone makes armor for a heavy warrior, someone sharpens equipment for a mage or archer, and someone likes silent killers and stealth. At the blacksmith, you can not only repair, but also seriously strengthen your weapon. And if you want deep customization – welcome to the skill tree, which in scale and flexibility is vaguely reminiscent of Path of Exile. Whether you want to be a pure healer or a hybrid of a fighter and a mage – no problem, it all depends on the chosen path.
At first, I treated leveling carelessly – like, this will do. I handed out points wherever, sometimes even forgot about their existence. Most enemies fell without much resistance, and the magic wand seemed like a lifesaver: it doesn’t break like a sword, doesn’t require arrows like a bow, and magic charges don’t run out like a staff. And stealth? It seemed completely unnecessary.

But this illusion crumbled as soon as we got to more serious locations in the main story. There, you had to think: the enemies became stronger, the magic was weaker, and the previous strategy no longer worked. That’s when I started to seriously delve into leveling: choosing talents, adapting to specific challenges. Even stealth suddenly became a salvation – sometimes it’s easier to slip past than to get involved in a head-on fight.
By the way, the combat system in Enshrouded turned out to be surprisingly exciting. It’s certainly not Dark Souls, but it’s not a banal “click until it dies” either. Here you need to dodge, block blows in time, use counterattacks, and if you have learned jumping blows, use them at the right moment. Especially memorable are the intense battles in the Shroud zone or in co-op, where enemies become stronger as your team grows. At such moments, the game really challenges – and this is when it reveals its most interesting side.
Exploring the World in Enshrouded
To cope with local enemies, it is not enough to simply upgrade a couple of skills. You will have to really immerse yourself in exploring the world: clearing Elixir Wells, accumulating experience, participating in battles and grinding. Fortunately, the game encourages this – the world here is huge, open and diverse, divided into biomes with regularly respawning enemies and a lot of new points of interest that appear on the map literally at every step. The Altar of Flame and the artisans are also not asleep – tasks pour in one after another. This is not just a banal collection of resources. Sometimes you have to look for lost items, as in the case of a blacksmith who suddenly asked to find his chest. And then it turns out that it is not some monster who is involved in the matter, but … a local carpenter. Such plot details make the quests more alive.
During your travels, you will constantly come across notes – they reveal the lore of the world and often lead to bandit lairs, abandoned caravans or hidden treasures. But even without them, there is so much around that your eyes run wild: ruins, remains of settlements, mysterious crypts and majestic spires. These spires, by the way, are local analogues of towers – if you get to the top, you will not only get a portion of lore, but also discover new interesting places, and at the same time learn where to look for altars and chapels of flame. And this is directly related to strengthening the character, because it is there that the resources for upgrading the camp and improving the Altar are stored.

You get out of the suffocating Shroud – your heart is pounding, you heal on the go, and finally – a clearing. A quiet settlement suddenly appears before you, and a little further away a house with a roof you can climb on rises. There are either beds with rare plants, or… an unpleasant surprise in the form of a new type of enemy. Take a couple of steps in the other direction – and you are already descending into a mine or an ancient crypt. Sometimes you find deposits of rare clay, sometimes – a real treasure: a huge chest with a legendary weapon. Dungeons, spires and tombs are rarely given away for free – most often they require solving a puzzle (in the style of “find and activate four runes”) or deftly bypassing a chain of traps. All this is familiar and at the same time pleasantly invigorating. It is not surprising that Enshrouded is often compared to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Here you can also glide above the ground and use a grappling hook, and the world itself seems spacious and full of secrets. The first twenty hours are like a holiday for an explorer: towers, riddles, chests, quests… you want to go further and deeper.
What really grabs you at the start:

But if you dig deeper, it becomes clear: there is not much depth here yet. The story is more of a background one, it is presented through notes with pieces of lore scattered around the world. The entire gameplay gradually boils down to the usual cycle: you collect resources, upgrade your equipment to cope with stronger opponents – and start over. Alone, this can be tiring, but in co-op it works great. Personally, I lack bright plot twists and truly significant events – I want the game to provide not only room for grinding, but also reasons for emotions.
What improvements await Enshrouded?
The developers of Enshrouded assure that the game already has all the main things they wanted to implement at the start. But they decided to use early access, which will last at least a year, as a chance to refine and expand the project – listening to the opinions of the players. The immediate plans include a significant increase in the size of the world, new biomes with unique landscapes and enemies, as well as additional resources and recipes for crafting, fresh types of weapons and equipment.
“As you level up your character, you will unlock new abilities in the skill tree. And even more furniture and materials will appear in construction – we want everyone to have a truly unique camp,” the developers share their plans.

It is interesting that the players themselves are primarily asking not so much for more content as for depth: they lack dynamic weather changes with an impact on gameplay, enemy raids on bases and, in general, a greater challenge in survival. All this, according to the team, is already in the works.
A separate topic is co-op. Currently, all progress online, including completing quests, is tied to the server and the general team. This is inconvenient: if your friends completed a task while you were away, it will be listed as completed in your journal, even if you haven’t seen it. The developers acknowledged the problem and promised to make changes: quests will be possible to complete personally, and the journal itself will be redesigned so that it clearly separates general and individual progress.
Is Enshrouded Worth Playing in 2025: Pros and Cons
Enshrouded can be called a survival for those who don’t like to suffer. The entry threshold is low, and the game itself is friendly to newcomers – perhaps that is why it gained popularity so quickly. The developers are trying to stay somewhere between the severity of Valheim and the atmospheric adventure in the spirit of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Visually, everything is done at a high level – at times it seems that you are almost a full-fledged AAA project.

But what the game lacks is depth. For fans of survival games like Valheim, everything is too simple here, and Zelda fans may not find that very magic of exploration. Sometimes the environment is completely reminiscent of the standard open worlds from Ubisoft games, where there are many points of interest, but little real meaning. This is the direction in which the authors should work hard while the game is in early access.
