At the very end of May, Deep Silver publishing decided to prepare a special gift for the players — a reissue of Dead Island: Definitive Collection. And although it’s not easy to compete with high—profile releases like DOOM, the developers have found an interesting way to attract attention: by pre-ordering the collection, you’ll get another pixel action game, Dead Island: Retro Revenge.
To make fans immediately understand what a surprise awaits them, the creators have released a short trailer. It shows the main character of Retro Revenge — an evil, and at the same time ridiculously charismatic guy who has to deal with hordes of the walking dead.

The plot of the game is deliberately absurd and at the same time funny: zombies came running from the Dead Island universe, who managed to steal not only the hero’s beloved cat, but also his car. And now the guy has no choice but to embark on a bloody 16-bit revenge quest. There was even a rumor online that Jack Black himself could have given the character a voice, but so far this information remains unconfirmed.
You shouldn’t expect serious horror or a dark atmosphere from Dead Island: Retro Revenge — it’s not horror, but rather a humorous platformer with fights, pixel explosions and references to the classics of the 90s. The focus here is on drive and fun, so fans of retro graphics and old-school action will definitely have something to do.

Dead Island Retro Revenge gameplay and plot
Dead Island Retro Revenge is a game that demonstrates from the very first minute that it is not going to pretend to be a serious action game. Everything is served with humor and light irony. The main character Max desperately breaks through the ruins of zombie-apocalyptic California for a goal that seems both strange and touching at the same time: to return his stolen cat. Not a global villain, not the salvation of humanity, but a cat and a stolen van become the reason for his bloody quest. And that’s exactly the charm of the game — it’s not afraid to be absurd and bright.
The story doesn’t overload here — the short cartoon clips between levels act more like stylized “screensavers” that poke fun at the player and show new improvements. The developers deliberately focused not on the narrative, but on the atmosphere and spirit of classic arcade games of the 80s. This is a real greeting from the past, addressed to those who still remember the machines with flashing screens and endless “Continue?”.
The gameplay is simple, but it catches with its rhythm. The battles unfold on three tracks, where Max gives punches to everyone: zombies, mutated animals and other evil spirits. At first, it seems that the game deliberately sets the difficulty threshold too high, but this is just a trick. After a couple of levels, you start to feel the tempo and rhythm of the attacks, and the timing combos turn into a little dance of rage. Gradually, the enemies become more cunning, the configurations are more complicated, and this is where the arcade essence manifests itself — reflexes decide everything.

At the same time, Dead Island Retro Revenge has its weaknesses. Three chapters fly by quickly, and the absence of bosses deprives the game of bright final accents. The level maps are tiny, there are not many enemies, and by the end of the passage it is noticeable that the scenery and techniques are repeated. Barrels, barriers and obstacles of the same type begin to merge into the familiar background. But Deep Silver tried to diversify the process through the points system: if you complete the level perfectly, without a single damage, the game rewards you handsomely. This element of the “challenge” makes you come back and try again to improve the result.
Special skills and weapons also look ambiguous. At first glance, they promise a variety: magical attacks, super strikes, and rare artifacts. But in reality, their impact on strategy is minimal — they decorate the process rather than radically change it. This is perhaps the main missed chance of the game.
Nevertheless, the project has a number of features that make it easy to love.:
-
an unusual plot with a cat instead of saving the world;
-
Dynamic arcade gameplay in retro style;
-
stylish animated videos between levels;
-
a point system that motivates you to re-complete;
-
light self-irony and an atmosphere of nostalgia.
And yet, despite the repetitions and modest scale, Dead Island Retro Revenge leaves behind the feeling of a fun old-school adventure. It was created not for long marathons, but in order to give the player the same drive of arcade machines in one evening. There are no pretentious monologues and plot twists, but there is energy, nostalgia and absurd humor. This is a small but honest project that knows how to entertain and remind you why simple arcade games once gathered crowds of fans around the screens.
