The first part of Darksiders is an example of a game that did not immediately receive the attention it deserved, but over time it gained a cult status. Its release coincided with the appearance of the more noticeable Bayonetta, which initially distracted the attention of a wider audience. The project reached the PC only a few months later, and it was then that many gamers first discovered its unique atmosphere. Despite obvious borrowings from other popular titles, the game surprised with a harmonious combination of borrowed mechanics, bright visual presentation and well-developed lore. Gradually, a fascinating story and charismatic heroes won the hearts of players, allowing Darksiders to firmly establish itself in the industry among competitors.

Darksiders saw the release of a sequel, which was re-released on modern consoles just last year. Launching the second installment without its predecessor felt like a puzzling decision, so the publisher THQ Nordic has now made amends by rolling out a remaster of the original, whimsically titled “Warmastered Edition.”
The central character of the original story is War, one of the legendary Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. He is accused of igniting a catastrophic conflict between Hell and Heaven, which leads to the devastating apocalypse on Earth. Facing a death sentence, War fervently implores the Council for a chance at redemption, and they consent by assigning an observer to monitor him. This guardian is prepared to eliminate the Horseman if he dares to break the terms of their fragile pact. Upon his return to a world he once knew, War discovers that more than a century has passed, humanity has been completely eradicated, and the forces of darkness have triumphed, leaving only a single angelic legion to stand against the overwhelming tide of evil that has consumed everything.

The appeal of Darksiders lies in its rare balance between intense action and engaging exploration, a symbiosis that keeps the game surprisingly fresh and relevant years after its release. The main character, War, travels through stunning, detailed worlds, engaging in battles with a variety of monsters, uncovering hidden secrets, and facing increasingly dangerous foes. Armed primarily with a massive sword, he slices through enemies with grace, showcasing fluid and responsive combat mechanics. Energy accumulated from successful strikes allows War to transform, growing in size and unleashing devastating moves capable of incinerating entire groups of enemies.
As the player progresses, new weapons are unlocked, including throwing weapons, each with unique combos that add to the combat system. Despite the lack of cel-shading like in, say, Borderlands or The Walking Dead, the game’s visual style is reminiscent of a graphic novel come to life. In the remaster, the developers took special care to preserve this expressive style: the transition to 1080p was implemented without losing artistic value. Moreover, improved lighting, advanced shadow effects, and spectacular special effects breathe new life into the almost seven-year-old game, giving it a modern sheen. Particularly noteworthy is the achievement of a stable 60 frames per second – a technical benchmark that not every remaster can boast. With its engaging combat system and memorable visual presentation, Darksiders continues to captivate both newcomers and veterans returning to a familiar world.
Lonely Wanderer
Regardless of the battles the player engages in, the locations they venture into, or the secrets they uncover, there’s never a sense that they’re dealing with “something outdated.” In the gaming industry, seven years can feel like an eternity; just look at the evolution between Assassin’s Creed II and Syndicate. However, if a game showcases a distinctive visual style and the genre hasn’t introduced much innovation during that time, its age won’t diminish the enjoyment of playing such an action-packed title, even after many years have passed. In Darksiders, players will discover a vast array of combos, weapons, hidden chests, and diverse enemies — once you immerse yourself in the gameplay, it becomes increasingly difficult to pull away. The engaging combat mechanics and rich environments create a compelling experience that keeps players invested.
This sense of engagement is further fueled by a constant feeling of progress. War, the protagonist, quickly picks up new techniques, acquiring fresh and creative methods to defeat the undead from a merchant who trades in the souls of the monsters he vanquishes. Many souls can be discovered in concealed chests scattered throughout the game world, but most are earned during intense battles. Each encounter demands the strategic use of the hero’s skills, although employing these abilities consumes Fury, which regenerates at a slow pace, adding an element of challenge to combat. After augmenting his arsenal and mastering various combos, the character can revisit previously cleared areas to uncover missed secrets. For instance, he won’t immediately learn how to shatter blue crystals, which adds an extra layer of exploration and discovery. This encourages players to continually engage with the world, enhancing the overall experience and ensuring that every playthrough offers something new to uncover.

There are several technical issues with the re-release that will most likely be fixed in the next updates. First of all, on the PS4 console, there is a desynchronization of audio and visuals in certain cutscenes. Initially, it seemed that this was limited to the introductory video, since such failures had not occurred for a long time. However, after a certain period of time, the problem suddenly made itself known again. Surprisingly, some PS4 owners did not encounter these problems at all, which only complicates understanding the cause. The second problem is the complete lack of sound effects in certain scenes. This is especially noticeable in one of the key and emotionally charged episodes, the name of which I will deliberately omit to avoid spoilers. And here again, a paradox arises: some users who completely completed the game were amazed to learn about this error only from online discussions, since in their case everything functioned without failures. In general, we can say that audio defects on PS4 exist, but they are clearly not widespread and are not always reproducible.
Darksiders: When a Slasher Becomes a Platformer with Soul, But the Camera Gets in the Way of Enjoyment
Darksiders is a hack-and-slash game that feels quite accessible and not overly challenging for players. With just one attack button, the combos and moves available for the weapons are rather limited. War can utilize a different weapon through a second attack button, but the chances of effectively linking the main and secondary attacks into meaningful combos are quite rare.

The dodge mechanic, which keeps the gameplay dynamic and requires a bit of skill, is only introduced in the sequel. In this first installment, you have a dash move instead. While the dash can help you evade enemy strikes effectively, it often disrupts the fluidity of combat like a house of cards collapsing under pressure. Interestingly, instead of relying solely on the dash, you can also avoid direct hits by blocking and then performing a counterattack, allowing for a more strategic approach to combat.
This blend of mechanics provides a unique rhythm to battles, though some players may find themselves longing for deeper combo systems and more engaging evasive maneuvers. Overall, the game strikes a balance between accessibility and action, making it appealing to a wide range of gamers.
What’s wrong with the game camera? In regular fights with ordinary enemies, it functions quite well, offering a view that helps you comfortably navigate what’s happening. However, everything changes when bosses enter the scene – and real chaos begins. Imagine the situation: you want to keep the enemy in sight in order to react in time to his devastating attack, while continuing to move. But here’s the problem – as soon as you release the right stick, the camera automatically returns behind the character, ignoring your attempts to control the angle. This behavior manifests itself in every such episode. No matter how hard you try to adapt the camera settings to yourself, it invariably seeks to take control of the situation, introducing confusion and disorientation, especially in the most tense moments.

In terms of gameplay, slasher elements are organically intertwined with platform mechanics, adding liveliness and tempo to the project. In addition, a slight touch of Metroidvania makes the passage even more exciting. As War navigates new areas, he must leap across ledges, solve spatial puzzles, battle persistent enemies, find useful artifacts, and return to previously completed areas to unlock previously inaccessible areas. This hybrid combination of gameplay styles provides a rich and multi-layered experience, encouraging the player to constantly explore and immerse themselves in a world full of surprises and challenges. In this game, players are faced with a rather mysterious situation: a mysterious Guardian appears on the way to two new areas. He would gladly allow you to proceed further, but he is bound by an ancient and powerful spell, completely depriving him of the ability to move. In order to free him, you will have to go to another dimension and go through a series of difficult tests. Interestingly, these tests are suspiciously similar to mechanics usually found in additional content: destroying enemies using certain methods, protecting allies from death, and defeating the strongest enemies in strictly allotted time intervals. Unexpectedly, these side quests become the key to progressing through the main story. Fortunately, the reward for completing them is a large number of souls – a valuable resource needed to purchase healing items and improve abilities. This approach not only gives meaning to what is happening, but also maintains balance, making the passage rich and exciting.
Conclusion
Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is a great opportunity for players to immerse themselves in the world of a series that has left a noticeable mark on the industry. Although the project does not pretend to be radically innovative, it masterfully combines familiar mechanics from other popular games, forming a coherent and exciting adventure. This is a classic “hack-and-slash” with a rich storyline that keeps your attention until the very end. Moreover, this version serves as a worthy introduction before moving on to the second part, which many fans rightly consider the pinnacle of the series.
In terms of technical execution, the remaster is confidently above average. Graphic textures have become sharper, the frame rate is stable, and the visuals have received a noticeable update, making the game much more attractive. However, there are still minor rough spots that could have been eliminated. In addition, some bugs from the original have not been fixed, which can disappoint those who were hoping for a flawless experience.
This version is especially suitable for those who have not played the original Darksiders before. They won’t have to deal with outdated graphics, low resolution or unstable performance – all of this has been successfully optimized. On the other hand, series veterans who are already familiar with the plot and gameplay may not find a compelling reason to play through it again, especially against the backdrop of new high-profile releases that have appeared this fall. However, if a wave of nostalgia hits and there is a desire to return to the gloomy universe of Darksiders, Warmastered Edition will be an excellent reason to feel the spirit of adventure again.
