Video game developers are often thrown from one creative extreme to another. A striking example is the studio that gave us the dark and cynical Hitman assassin simulator, and then suddenly switched to the touching children’s tale Mini Ninjas. The American WayForward team seems to have decided to go this way in the opposite direction — and even on a much bolder scale.
Just a couple of years ago, the studio released the almost “sinless” platformer A Boy and His Blob, a poetic two—dimensional story about friendship, where the little hero constantly hugged his snow-white companion. The project was admired for its soft animation, cozy atmosphere and high-quality visual stylization, as if created by hand. But after such a kind and bright game, the opposite seemed to be asking for — a powerful, unrestrained action game full of drive, gloomy aesthetics and biting gameplay.
And WayForward seems to have decided to compensate for the previous “mimicry” as decisively as possible. After a long pause, the studio returned to the genre of dynamic slashers and is preparing a new installment of the bloody BloodRayne series for the publisher Majesco. In five years of silence, fatal Rain seemed to have “lost weight” by one dimension, moving into a stylish 2D plane, but her thirst for hunting, brutal attacks and trademark vampire charisma have not disappeared anywhere.
It seems that the heroine is eager to fight again — and very soon she will be ready to make a real break.

Rain had not been heard from for a long time — the heroine seemed to have disappeared into the shadow of the industry. Over the years, other bright characters have managed to occupy her niche. The same Bayonetta, for example, offered a much more refined mix of spectacular action and author’s madness: erotic plastic, baroque aesthetics, surreal scenes and the very dragon woven from hair. Against the background of this shocking production, the classic BloodRayne looked almost defiant — a real cocktail of fascists, demonic creatures, latex, groans and intentionally exaggerated thrash. The combat system was far from ideal, combos broke down midway, but the game was different — with a whiplash of energy, drive, and stylistics close to the aggressive Japanese anime of the mid-2000s.
It was this association that the developers decided to take to the logical limit — and made the rebirth of the heroine literally visual and conceptual.
Now BloodRayne appears in the format of a full-fledged anime slasher, a two—dimensional action film that can easily be put on a par with Dishwasher in terms of dynamics and tempo. But there is an important difference: about thirty professional artists and animators worked on the artistic style of Betrayal, each of whom brought his own handwriting. Gradually, we had to abandon the outright trash — the picture turned out to be too expressive, detailed and artistic. The studio took the bright, emotional energy of its previous project, A Boy and His Blob, and turned it into a gothic action story with dark scenery and a much more serious tone.

Using an improved engine, the game delivers such an impressive visual performance that only a few can compete with it, except for the art—house Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet. Betrayal feels like a meticulous job: one team deals with the characters, the other deals exclusively with backgrounds and surroundings, which allows you to achieve a truly complete artistic image. The cold gray backdrops contrast with the bright, sharp silhouettes of the characters, and the scarlet splashes of blood turn into expressive strokes, as if applied with a wide brush on the canvas of the screen. The blood here is part of the artistic language, a visual rhythm that highlights every clash and combo.
With such a powerful visual base, it would simply be unacceptable to turn the game into a messy, bad slasher — it grew out of this format.
Following a new direction, the authors brought aesthetics to an absolute finale — to the anime “D: Vampire Hunter” by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. The same dark romanticism, the same Gothic motifs, the moping hero, demonic creatures and bizarre architectural forms resembling cosmic spires or fantasy cathedrals. Everything here is subordinated to the mood of dark fantasy and vampire legends, where every scene seems to be written in blood. I think you already understand what this is all about — what we’re looking at is not just a relaunch, but a complete reinvention of Rain’s image.

BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites Plot
The plot of the new adventure is based around the classic conflict of light and darkness. Half-blood vampire Rain, an agent of the Brimstone secret organization, goes on the hunt again to stop Lord Kagan, a tyrant who seeks to resurrect the demon Zeta Gamma and take over the world. The story develops gradually, unfolding through a set of fifteen missions. However, there is no need to expect deep drama here: the characters are written rather superficially, the motivations remain at the level of general sketches, and there are practically no unexpected plot twists. This is the case when the narrative only sets the frame for the action, but does not become its driver.
But the gameplay is able to hold the attention much more confidently, although not without flaws. The mechanics are based on two key elements — dynamic combat and platforming, and as you progress, the balance shifts significantly towards jumps, traps, and precise maneuvers. This is where one of the main disadvantages of the game comes in: the Rain control doesn’t feel as responsive as it would like for a genre like this. Platform sections become a source of annoyance more often than boss battles or large-scale fights.

The problem lies in the specific game design. Some of the distances between the platforms are designed so that a standard jump is not enough, but using a jerk in the air leads to the fact that the desired point is behind. A similar situation occurs with traps: they are triggered faster than you can perform a maneuver, and the guns launch attacks at such a speed that the heroine cannot dodge even with the exact timing. It seems that back in 2011, the game did not have enough thorough testing, and in the re—release, the authors decided to keep the original complexity “as is” – apparently for the sake of authenticity.
Nevertheless, not everything is so gloomy. As compensation, the developers have generously placed checkpoints — fountains of blood, which serve as points of preservation here. Thanks to them, losses do not turn into long-term torment, and only small fragments of the level have to be repeated. This smooths out the roughness of the platforming at least a little and allows you to return to the battles for which many people launch BloodRayne.
Combat in BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites
The action game in BloodRayne: Betrayal leaves mixed impressions. At first glance, the system looks dynamic and spectacular, but after a few minutes you begin to notice its unpredictability. The logic of combos is not always amenable to analysis: you press the same bunch of buttons on the gamepad, and each time the Rain responds with a new movement. One minute she will swing her blades in both directions, then she will send the enemy flying with a powerful kick, then she will suddenly lunge, as if choosing a battle program according to her own mood. For a normal game, such a “creative variety” even works for the atmosphere: the battles look lively, intense, and the hack itself is elegant and plastic.
But once you set yourself the task of getting a high rating based on the results of the mission, the situation changes. At such moments, you want precise control over combat techniques, a clear understanding of which blow will be next — and not forced trust in the algorithm, which sometimes acts almost by accident. The lack of predictability turns from beauty into an annoying gameplay element.

As the story progresses, another problem arises — the lack of development of the combat system. You enter the first fights with the thought: “Now I’m just warming up, then new techniques will open up, and spectacular gameplay with cascading combos will begin.” But expectations remain expectations. Yes, Rain does gain new abilities, but the game uses them primarily in platforming and acrobatic sections. Among the new skills there are:

Although these skills enhance interaction with the environment, they have little effect on the combat system.
The only way to “upgrade” is to collect collectible items — red skulls. For every five trophies found, the game allows you to choose a boost: either increase your health reserve or expand the number of magnum cartridges. This adds a light element of progression, but it still doesn’t help the feeling that the system’s potential is only half full.
When they recall the original, the first thing they talk about is the frenzied complexity — and for good reason. Betrayal inherits the spirit of the old school, reminiscent of hardcore platformers with the NES and SNES, where any wrong move was punished immediately, and the ability to “read” enemy attacks was the key to survival. However, the new reissue has attempted to soften this approach. The updated difficulty level is noticeably more humane: going through the game in the redesigned mode, I had almost no difficulties in duels.
Out of curiosity, I then returned to the original complexity — and the difference was not as dramatic as one might think. The enemies really began to hit harder, but Rain still withstands an impressive number of blows, cuts and bites, while maintaining the ability to stand on his feet and continue the fight. The difficulty has increased, but it has not become destructive, as in the old schools, where one mistake could send you to the very beginning of the level.
