Once upon a time, I already had the opportunity to go through the first BloodRayne. Then she left behind a whole bunch of emotions — from curiosity about the gloomy setting to fatigue from the same type of gameplay. The feeling of endless wandering through identical concrete corridors, where the hunt for Nazi officers sometimes turned into a monotonous routine, is especially tenacious from my memories. And yet — why did I decide to return to the Rain universe again and take on BloodRayne 2? It’s probably the same damn curiosity that drives a gamer to explore the sequel and figure out what’s changed in the plot, mechanics, and overall atmosphere of the game.

The red-haired dhampir Rain appears on the screen like a movie star: an elegant dress, realistic fabric physics that sets off her every step, and a luxurious hall where a private party for vampires and other undead takes place. The atmosphere of decadence doesn’t last long — in just a minute, the signature meat grinder begins, in which the game demonstrates its predatory nature and bloody action.
The starting location is really impressive. By PS2 standards, the levels look more than decent: the polished marble with neat reflections and luxurious interiors are mesmerizing. Almost every detail of the surroundings can be destroyed, from massive statues and carved cabinets to candlesticks and chairs. Sometimes you forget that all this worked on hardware back in 2004: the authors clearly got the most out of the aging console, surprising with its architecture and rich visual style.
But not only the graphics have been tightened — the combat system has received a powerful upgrade. The finishing moves here are staged like scenes from a brutal action movie: a variety of animations, unique strikes and a feeling of real physics with each hit. The harpoon chain stands out in particular – a real calling card of BloodRayne 2. In almost every room there is an interactive object on which you can effectively impale another bloodsucker. One has only to hook an enemy with a harpoon, and the next second he is already flying at the tip of a thorn or horn, as if in a slow—motion scene of a dynamic action movie.
And I haven’t mentioned the main star of the game yet. Rain still combines the power of a predator and the attractiveness of a femme fatale. The bloodsuckers themselves seem to be in a hurry to put their necks under her fangs, and each absorption of blood is accompanied by a characteristic, almost intimate moan. The stylish image, expressive facial expressions and languid voice of the actress make Rain one of the most charismatic characters of her genre, enhancing the atmosphere of Gothic action.

Acrobatics was also a pleasant surprise. Parkour in the game is simple but intuitive: Rain clings to the right objects, jumps without delay and lands unmistakably. For comparison, I once saw a stream of the old version on a PC before Terminal Cut — the player was desperately trying to just jump off the pipe in the right direction, turning the scene into a farce and sending the keyboard into the trash can. Now, the platforming has become friendlier, and the controls are much more responsive, saving fans from unnecessary gray hair.
And everything seems to hint at the perfect sequel: the annoying “clipping” from the first part has been fixed, there are fewer monotonous corridors, and a variety of mechanics, weapons, and gameplay features make the passage intense. The first boss instantly knocks down the pink glasses. The opening battle lasts for a few seconds: the enemy humiliated Rain twice, without even allowing her to join the gameplay. Trying to spy on tactics on YouTube didn’t save the situation either. In the video, the player turned on rage and simply sliced the enemy like a cabbage until it fell apart. I was complicating everything: I was looking for special techniques, trying to use new combos and even pistols that the game had given out before the battle. But it turned out that no tactics were needed — the boss was simply dying from the usual frenzied clicking of the left mouse button.
“Well, okay,” I thought, “this is definitely a warm—up.” And indeed, the next boss looked much more interesting, forcing you to use the environment and think about timings. But the joy turned out to be premature—it was just a brief distraction before what was to come next.

BloodRayne 2 Gameplay Issues
From the second chapter, the game seems to throw off the mask and show its true face. Rain opens onto the gloomy city streets, a place that looks more like a giant dump, inhabited by the dregs of society and bandits, as if they had escaped from Kingpin: Life of Crime. And if earlier it was possible to feed freely on the blood of enemies, now many of these thugs are armed with bats, nails and other scrap metal. As soon as the heroine tries to suck on another thug, she is immediately knocked to the ground, stunned, and while she is lying down, they behave, to put it mildly, unfriendly. In such conditions, the health scale melts before our eyes, and the constant restoration of blood becomes an essential element of combat mechanics.
Yes, Rain has techniques for knocking weapons out of her hands, but the trouble is that these are full-fledged combos: three strikes minimum. And while you’re doing these three damn moves, another opponent runs into the frame and punches you in the head — the gameplay turns into chaos. An elegant backflip? Sometimes it works, but more often it doesn’t. Moreover, the enemies never go one at a time: four or five muggers invariably turn out to be nearby, simply pinning Rain into a corner and breaking the rhythm of the battle.
But the main test is still ahead — the endless spawn of enemies. According to the developers, it should fit seamlessly into the gameplay: you can only move forward when you use the environment — you throw opponents into a huge fan or dump them into a garbage truck until it overloads and explodes. The problem is that it takes seven to nine “victims” to activate each such mechanism, and it’s not easy to do that.
Firstly, the lock-on-target system only works when Rain is looking directly at the enemy. To heal, you have to turn your character around and press a button—and while you’re doing that, you’re already being beaten, knocked off course, and thwarted by any attempt at strategic action.

Secondly, the circuit, which should be a reliable control tool, is frankly crooked. The control of throws is difficult and unintuitive: sometimes the enemy flies away to the side where there are no interactive objects, sometimes it hardly moves at all. If there are several opponents, the chain seems to “get entangled” in them, stops working or behaves randomly — it is almost impossible to control the trajectory.
As a result, the gameplay process constantly suffers from three key problems:

an inadequate lock that requires setting the Rain at an ideal angle;

unpredictable chain behavior during throws;

a high density of enemies, due to which any delay leads to instant stunning.
For a game where these mechanics are used at every turn, such flaws become a source of endless irritation.
And so, having overcome this mess in management, I get to the third boss, the ninja. But first you need to clear the arena of the next crowd of gopnik. Seeing that the enemies are climbing non-stop, I immediately look for interactive elements of the environment. I find two barrels of fuel, and it makes sense that they should explode. I throw one opponent into the barrel — silence. The second one has zero effect. And there’s nothing else in the room. While I was experimenting, Rain got hit more than in the entire previous location.
The second attempt. I decide to activate vampire vision — maybe I missed something important. And indeed, I notice a crossbar from which you can jump to the second floor. I get up, make a jump… and crash into an invisible wall. Excellent! While I’m trying to understand the logic of the local “platforming”, Rain is being mobbed again.
The third attempt. I think: “Okay, maybe the enemies aren’t endless. I’ll kill them all, and the cut scene will trigger.” And indeed, after a long, exhausting meat grinder, the moment finally arrives. But this, as it turned out, is not even the boss himself – it’s just a path to him.
