It just so happened that I got acquainted with many cult game series not from the first part, but from the second. This was the case with Heroes of Might and Magic, Gothic, Worms, Diablo… and Divinity was no exception. The plot of the new chapter unfolds two decades after the events of the original game. Order and peace have finally reigned in Rivelon. The Earth is recovering from a brutal war with the Dark Circle – the paladins are methodically finishing off the remnants of enemy forces.
However, during one of the purges, everything went wrong. A squad of paladins who tracked down a necromancer were almost completely killed by an archdemon named Samuel. The demon dragged the only survivor into the sinister world of Nemesis – not for salvation, but for torment. But the paladin was not so simple: he managed to escape from captivity and escaped from the guards, who were none other than the death knight. Unfortunately, the escape failed – the fugitive was captured again. Enraged, Samuel made a cruel decision: he bound the souls of the paladin and his overseer, punishing both. Now their destinies are intertwined forever – if one dies, the other will fall.

Beyond Divinity Free Steam Account
The first thing that catches your eye in the new part of the game is the change of genre. Now we have not just a single hack-and-slash, but a full-fledged team RPG. From the very beginning, we control not one, but two characters: the main character and the death knight. Both can choose their class, but the death knight’s equipment cannot be replaced. But as the level increases, his resistance to damage and elemental effects increases, which makes him an extremely tenacious fighter. Later, you can add magic dolls to your team – they summon various creatures, but, in fact, are useful only as walking chests. In order for the dolls to become stronger, you will have to spend the main character’s upgrade points on them, so their combat potential is debatable.
Classic characteristics like strength, agility, intelligence and endurance remain in place, but new ones have appeared: initiative (affects the turn order in battle), luck (responsible for critical hits) and survival skill (helps to resist the elements). The skill system has also changed. Now each active or passive ability can be developed in a certain direction. For example, did you prefer a one-handed melee weapon? Choose what is more important – pure damage, accuracy or critical attack chance.

The main thing is that the game is now better balanced. At the beginning and in the middle of the game, mages and warriors feel about equally useful. Although with magic, things are not so simple. On the one hand, a “spell designer” system has appeared, reminiscent of the one in Tyranny. It allows you to create the necessary effects manually, but the effectiveness of the spells themselves suffers a little. On the other hand, new schools, such as shamanism, have become both easier to master and stronger in practice. Some spells are especially good, for example, “Hammer”.
Thief skills are finally no longer just decoration: hacking, detecting traps, and even stealth are now really necessary. Want to lure an enemy out of an ambush? Hide and act carefully. A nice moment: leveling up is no longer permissive. Each class is initially limited to two or three development branches. You can expand them only if you find special books or pay mentors. But even then, you will only get access to new skills – the skills themselves will still have to be studied separately.
This innovation is reflected in equipment. Forget about vampire boots, shields with a bonus to blacksmithing, or armor that shoots lightning. Now equipment directly affects the character’s stats – that’s all. But there is much more of it, and it is displayed in detail on the hero’s 3D model. In addition to swords, axes, and maces, there are now magic staves and wands, the power of which depends on intelligence. And bows and crossbows now support ammunition with various effects – from fire to poison.

What is the difference between Beyond Divinity and Divine Divinity
The heavy war hammer is not just a formidable weapon. Not only does it deal devastating damage, but it also hits multiple enemies within the strike radius, temporarily stunning them. However, such power comes at a price — the mana consumption of this weapon is simply colossal. You won’t be able to use it thoughtlessly; you’ll have to calculate each swing. There will be someone to use all these deadly techniques on. Nemesis’ bestiary is striking in its diversity: here are classic enemies like skeletons, demons, and giant spiders, familiar from the first part, and completely new monsters. The monsters have become angrier, smarter, and, what’s especially unpleasant, many now have increased resistance to certain types of damage. Therefore, one set of weapons for everyone is no longer enough — each character must have at least one additional “elemental” alternative, and preferably two. This is no longer a whim, but a necessity for survival.
It has become more convenient to play. The developers have redesigned the interface: now the inventory, equipment and character parameters are collected in one window, without endlessly opening new tabs. At the beginning of the game, the player is accompanied by pop-up tips that help quickly get used to and not get lost in new mechanics. “Rats! My worst nightmare! Almost like that stone monster with four heads… or a barrel full of eels!” is one of the many grotesque, memorable dialogues in the game. It is such phrases that fill the world with humor, even if chaos and darkness reign around.

A short novel written by Rhianna Pratchett, daughter of the famous Terry Pratchett, was also released for the game. This book became a bridge between the events of Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity, adding depth and completeness to the universe. If Divine Divinity told a fairly classic story about a hero chosen by fate to fight great evil, Beyond Divinity moved in a darker and more personal direction. Instead of a global conflict, there is a private tragedy: our hero and his forced companion, the death knight, find themselves bound by a magical chain. Their main goal is not to free the world, but to save their own souls: to escape from the demonic dimension of Nemesis, destroy the magical connection and return home to Rivellon.
As they flee, a terrible picture unfolds: chaos has won. The lands of Nemesis are distorted, and its inhabitants either perish or go mad, enslaved by archdemons. These are not just antagonists – these are real executioners, turning people into toys, breaking their will and mind. The world is lost, and every step of the heroes is a fight not only for freedom, but also for a drop of hope.
Beyond Divinity Plot
The plot is divided into chapters, and this only benefited the game. Now the passage has become more structured, and the story itself is integral and logical. Each act throws up new challenges: somewhere you need to escape from a gloomy prison, somewhere – pretend to be a soldier of the army of Chaos, and sometimes – investigate mysterious events or even study in the ruins of a once great academy, where only ghosts now live.
Side quests have become simpler in mechanics, but more meaningful in meaning. They are now closely connected with the main plot and complement it with important details. It is especially interesting to watch how former enemies become temporary allies – imps, undead, dark magicians, and sometimes frightening creatures like giant spiders or stone gargoyles will gladly entrust you with some dubious task for a generous reward.

And even monsters – from gargoyles to huge spiders – capable of engaging in dialogue.
The world of Nemesis turned out to be truly alien and frightening. The designers did a great job: bizarre architecture, distorted landscapes, alien flora and fauna – all this evokes a feeling of disturbing detachment from familiar reality. Locations like a hellish prison or a destroyed academy create a gloomy background and allow you to feel the scale of the demonic invasion. The soundtrack fits the atmosphere perfectly – the music has become darker, heavier, and rare scenes in the still untouched Rivelone emphasize this contrast.
Dialogues in Beyond Divinity have become noticeably deeper. Each important character has a personality, their own story, motives. The death knight was especially memorable – our forced companion, who has not only an opinion, but also fears, desires, internal conflicts. Listening to him is not an obligation, but a choice of the player, and this choice is often difficult.
Even the antagonists now have motivation. They are not simply “evil” for the sake of evil – they act based on their own logic, which has no place for pity or compassion. For some demons, people are just toys. For others, they are a resource, an obstacle, or a tool.
Is Beyond Divinity Worth Playing in 2025?
Unfortunately, the publisher’s interference seriously spoiled the development process of Beyond Divinity. Larian was literally rushed to release, and as a result, the game ended up in a classic “production hell”. The project came out raw and filled with bugs. Several patches only partially improved the situation, but even today you can encounter serious problems:

quest items can disappear without a trace,

scripts don’t work,

some equipment can’t be sold or transferred,

the trading menu noticeably reduces FPS.
The tight deadlines have caused some damage to details: nameless NPCs repeat the same couple of phrases, many don’t even have their own icons in dialogues. Visual variety is also modest – there is a noticeable lack of character models. Some mechanics have disappeared completely: for example, you can no longer simply break a locked barrel – only hacking.

Under pressure from the publisher, the developers took a strange step: they artificially extended the length of the game. You will have to walk a lot. A lot. Sometimes it feels like the game has turned into a walking simulator with some fights. This is especially annoying in the second half of the game: you take a side quest, and suddenly it turns out that the character or item you need is on the other side of the map. For example, the mission with finding a book almost drove me crazy. To complete it, you had to run through several NPCs, descend to the tower floors, and then wander through a confusing dungeon. And yet, Beyond Divinity is not without its merits. The stories that are told in the quests are well written, and the development of the world and atmosphere do their job. For me personally, these elements outweigh the technical rough spots.
The game can probably be recommended, but with reservations: first of all, it will suit ardent fans of the series and those who enjoy leveling and exploration, no matter what.
