Founded by natives of Capcom, the PlatinumGames studio quickly established itself with a high-profile partnership: in 2008, it signed a deal with SEGA to release four new projects at once (later another one was added to the list). As a result, the stylish black-and—white action game MadWorld for Wii, the space role-playing game Infinite Space for DS, as well as two future hits, Bayonetta and Vanquish, originally released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, were born.

If the company hardly remembers the first two titles today, then Bayonetta and Vanquish have become the hallmark of the studio. These games have been re-released more than once: in 2017, they reached the PC, and later Bayonetta was released on both the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch. Now it’s the turn of the current home platforms — the anniversary edition has been named Bayonetta. & The Vanquish 10th Anniversary Bundle became a logical continuation of the history of the cult dilogy.

Admittedly, the authors decided not to break something that already works great. This is not a revolution, but neat remasters. Bayonetta and Vanquish received 4K support, doubled frame rate and tightened graphics, familiar from the PC versions. And that’s it — without unnecessary experiments and unnecessary innovations.

It’s not worth waiting for any additional content. Therefore, if you have already played both games more than once in recent years, it is unlikely that the collection will give you new impressions. But for those who want to regain their vivid emotions or get to know these hits for the first time, remasters are perfect.

Bayonetta’s plot

Vanquish remains an example of what a dynamic action movie should look like even years later. This game doesn’t get old: something is happening here every minute, and it’s just impossible to stop. Modern shooters can rarely offer the same frenzied pace and spectacular shootouts. The main character, Sam Gideon, controls a high—tech combat suit with boosters. It allows you to rush through arenas at extreme speed, quickly reach enemies or effectively glide to cover. Complete freedom, of course, is limited by the overheating of the system, but even with this limitation, the battle feels non-stop and driving.

The smart suit reacts to any damage: in case of serious blows, the time dilation effect is activated, giving a chance to survive and turn the tide of battle. The player can turn on this mode manually, but they have to act lightning fast — when the hero overheats, he becomes vulnerable and turns into an easy target. The essence of the gameplay is simple and at the same time incredibly exciting: acceleration, shooting, hiding places and constant battles with groups of opponents. Some attack with standard weapons, while others sit behind turrets or use special tactics. Vanquish does not let you get bored, constantly throwing up new situations: you need to clear the zone, then hold a strategic object, then cope with the next wave of enemies.

There were also weaknesses. The plot, alas, remains a weak link. Russian Russians and the Order of the Russian Star, headed by Viktor Zaitsev, sounds caricatured and does not catch on. Even the numerous cutscenes in which the villain says “Goodbye!” in a comical accent don’t save the day. Behind the roar of explosions and the avalanche of shootouts, the plot twists and turns dissolve and are perceived more as a background.

Another disadvantage is the duration. The campaign runs for 6-8 hours, and after the credits there are only a few bonus challenges. They can tickle the nerves of those who dream of knocking out a platinum trophy, but you should not count on a full-fledged endgame.

As for the Vanquish remaster, it almost completely repeats the PC version. Some problems like frame drawdowns in the videos have remained. But these are more minor quibbles than serious flaws. The picture has become cleaner and brighter — no “soap” since the PS3 era, the filters have been removed, and the game itself is stable. The cut scenes are limited to 30 frames per second, but they look very decent. Overall, the remaster is a great opportunity to once again immerse yourself in one of the best action games from PlatinumGames.

What makes Bayonetta one of the best games ever

Bayonetta can hardly be called just a good game. It’s much more than that. Even a decade later, it remains one of the best action games in history, and for many, it is an unsurpassed benchmark of the genre. It is enough to go through just the prologue to understand why she is so enthusiastic. From the very first minutes, you are covered by the whirlwind of the production, the drive of the soundtrack, the filigree choreography of the fights and the mesmerizing videos. The controls are intuitive and responsive, so every fight feels like a well-honed dance. Unsurprisingly, Bayonetta still deserves to be rated “Amazing” and strongly recommended to all Devil May Cry fans who, for some reason, still haven’t gotten to the early masterpiece of PlatinumGames.

However, the original version looked, to put it mildly, imperfect, especially on PlayStation 3. The Sony console then caused developers a lot of problems — to recall at least Mafia II without grass. Even Japanese studios couldn’t always figure out its architecture. As a result, Bayonetta on the PS3 worked at 30 FPS with constant drawdowns, while the Xbox 360 produced a stable 60 frames. The resolution on both platforms was limited to 720p, and the picture suffered from the then-fashionable “diseases”: a dull palette and textures, as if covered with a brown filter.

The reissue did not become a carnival show of colors, but it gave a clear picture, a stable frame rate and an eye-pleasing resolution. The Bayonette in the updated version looks even more impressive: its smooth transitions from one crazy move to another are literally mesmerizing. True, videos (as in Vanquish) are still limited to 30 FPS, but this is a small thing against the background of the overall picture.

Of course, the Bayonetta also has rough edges. The camera sometimes behaves strangely, individual episodes leave a feeling of crumpling, the plot does not pretend to be deep, and sudden QTEs can “kill” the heroine at the most inopportune moment, if only because the player was distracted by scratching his nose. But all this pales before her main strength — the battles.

The signature trick — activating slow-mo when dodging at the last moment — turns every encounter into a gambling challenge. Coupled with a rich arsenal of combinations of light and heavy punches, the fights always remain fresh and driving. Especially when they unfold against a backdrop of magnificent scenery, and the enemies are creatures with a truly fantastic design.

The technical part of the reissue deserves a separate discussion. On consoles, it is almost identical to the PC version, but with one annoying nuance: in extremely rare cases, the game may crash after death. This was also observed in Vanquish, but the bug was promptly fixed with a patch. Bayonetta has not yet received an update at the time of writing, but there is no doubt that the fix will not be long in coming.

The Pros and Cons of Bayonetta

Bayonetta & The Vanquish 10th Anniversary Bundle is a real gift for those who, for some reason, never managed to complete these legendary action games or once ran them only on old consoles where the games worked with difficulty. Now everything is different: smooth 60 FPS, a clear 4K picture and a full set of impressions for which these projects have become iconic.

If you already have Bayonetta and Vanquish on Steam, then there are few reasons to buy the collection. There are no additional modes, bonus content, or special features, as was the case, for example, with the re-release of Devil May Cry 3 on Switch. But for beginners and those who dreamed of evaluating both games in the best quality, this is a great chance to catch up.
