At the 2018 Independent Games Festival, the puzzle game Baba Is You caused a real sensation. It took home the awards for Best Student Project and Outstanding Design, but fell just short of the top prize, snatched by the cult classic Night in the Woods. But even without this triumph, the game generated enormous attention.
It initially captivated fans of unusual indie experiments, and a little later, after the announcement of the Nintendo Switch version, the buzz grew even louder. And this is unsurprising: what seemed strange and unique in the trailers becomes a source of constant delight in real life. The deeper you delve into the puzzle, the more you sense its uniqueness and charm.

At first glance, Baba Is You may seem somewhat similar to The Witness: both are built around a single mechanic that unfolds for dozens of hours in a row. But if in The Witness you draw lines on the panels and look for the right angle of view, then here you will find a completely different adventure. Baba Is You turns the usual rules of games into a constructor that can be disassembled and reassembled.
Each level in Baba Is You is a puzzle game where the rules are written directly on the screen in the form of words. And the most amazing thing is that they can be changed. In The Witness, you got used to the environment and tried to look at the task from a different angle. In Baba Is You, you have to literally rewrite the laws of the world, moving words and creating new combinations. What helped on one level is absolutely useless on the next, because there is a new limitation or unexpected condition. Sometimes you want to give up everything — the solution seems so incomprehensible. But it’s worth returning to the task after a pause, and suddenly everything adds up to a perfect chain: “How did I not figure it out earlier?!”.

The game is based on the construction of simple phrases. They are usually connected via “is”, which sets a property for the object. For example, “water is sink” — water absorbs everything that gets on it. “Baba is you” means you control a small white creature that looks like a sheep. But the rules can be rewritten: instead of Baba, put a robot, cog, or key, and you’re already controlling a robot, gear, or key.
Later, new elements appear. The conjunction “and” allows you to combine objects: “wall and door is stop” prohibits passing through walls and doors. But once you move the word “is” or “stop”, the rule ceases to exist. In the end, the goal always boils down to the phrase “is win”. If it says “flag is win”, touch the flag and win. And if “skull is win”, you’ll have to hug the skull.
Baba Is You is not just a puzzle, it is a simulator for the mind. It forces you to think outside the box, break down the usual framework and look for solutions where they would seem to be impossible. That is why it is called one of the most original and ingenious puzzles of our time.

Baba Is You Gameplay
In this game, no one promises complete freedom of action — and rightly so. If every riddle could be solved in a dozen ways, then the very essence of the puzzles would disappear. The developer carefully limits the space, arranging the conditions so that they cannot simply be removed or dragged. Sometimes the necessary elements are hidden behind walls and pipes, sometimes they lie directly in plain sight, and then you have to experiment: connect nouns, adjectives or interjections and see how the world changes.
The mechanics are based on simple phrases. For example, it’s easy to get “baba is float” from “baba is you”, and then your character turns into a flying lamb that can hover above the ground and pass through traps. These rules work both vertically and horizontally, which opens up dozens of combinations and unexpected results.

Each level surprises with its originality. It seems that you have already figured out all the rules and know exactly what the new combination will give. But suddenly the game throws up a new word — and the usual logic collapses. What helped turn a woman into a key or move walls yesterday is no longer working today. You have to rebuild your strategy, try different moves, experiment with characters and objects. Sometimes you have a small location with a minimum of possibilities, sometimes a huge arena with dozens of words, doors, traps and additional heroes.
The game quickly begins to test your strength. After the fifteenth puzzle, easy victories end — solutions do not come in a couple of attempts. You need to carefully study every detail, think over a plan and take into account all the limitations. Sometimes the most ridiculous option turns out to be correct, and complex combinations only confuse. But that’s exactly where the pleasure lies: every “Congratulations!” after a successful completion gives you a real sense of victory and confidence that the efforts were not in vain.
Baba Is You’s Level and World System: What’s in Store for Players
It’s probably clear to everyone that playing Baba Is You with hints means depriving yourself of the main pleasure. This game is designed for you to try, make mistakes, experiment, and unexpectedly find the right solution. It is at such moments that the real feeling of victory comes. The levels here can be restarted in just a couple of clicks, and each action is easy to undo with a single tap, as if rewinding time. You will definitely encounter tasks that at first glance seem unsolvable, but that’s what makes the process so exciting. The developers have provided everything and built the structure of the game so that you don’t feel stumped.
There are about two hundred puzzles scattered in Baba Is You, combined into several worlds. To open new locations, it is not necessary to go through absolutely everything — it is enough to solve some of the tasks. At the same time, with each completed level, not one, but several neighboring episodes open at once, so you always have a choice: continue to rest on a complex puzzle or switch to another and return later. However, it won’t work to quit the game halfway through — in order to move on, you need to at least gradually close the “tails”. And for some stages, there are more complicated versions: outwardly they seem to be the same, but it is enough to remove one word or change the condition — and the usual solution no longer works.

The main magic of Baba Is You is its uniqueness. It is so unlike anything that has been released in recent years that it is almost impossible to find a worthy analogue. Yes, puzzle games with moving objects have been known since the days of Sokoban on the Commodore 64, but here the principle is completely different. You don’t just push boxes or move objects — you change the very rules of the world. Each object has its own meaning, and it can be radically transformed. This is not a one-time brilliant idea that gets boring after an hour: it is a rich collection of 200 unique levels, each of which teaches new things through experience and experiments, and not through boring hints or long instructional texts.
One more point is worth noting: Baba Is You exists only in English. It is almost impossible to translate it into other languages, because the meaning is tied to short phrases and grammar. In Russian, for example, because of the cases, everything would simply fall apart. But even if you know English at a basic level, it won’t be a problem. The words here are simple, but it’s enough to look into the translator a couple of times to fully understand. In just a few minutes, you will begin to grasp the meaning without prompting and will understand how each word affects the game.
Is Baba Is You Worth Playing? Pros, Cons, and Impressions
Despite all its uniqueness and bold originality, Baba Is You never quite managed to break through to a wider audience. It wasn’t nominated for “Game of the Year,” and foreign publications practically ignored it before its release, despite the project already having won prestigious awards. This is a shame, because in terms of gameplay, few games can match the level of creativity that Baba Is You offered players. It’s the kind of game that remains in the memory of “that crazy indie puzzler someone heard about but never tried.”

And that’s a shame. Hearing about it isn’t enough. This puzzle game requires personal experience, or even better, playing it with friends to debate solutions, share discoveries, and be amazed each time at how flexible game rules can be when they become part of the gameplay itself.
Strengths of Baba Is You:
-
A completely fresh, innovative idea that breaks the mold of puzzles.
-
Each puzzle requires a unique approach; it’s impossible to settle into a routine and solve them.
-
There’s plenty of room for experimentation—almost every scene unlocks new combinations.
-
Convenient level structure: if you get stuck, you can always return to other tasks and avoid spending hours stuck in one place.
-
Nearly 200 unique puzzles, enough to keep you entertained for long evenings.
Cons:
The only serious drawback is that Baba Is You sometimes seems to mock the player, hinting, “You’re not as smart as you think.” For some, this is a challenge, while for others, it’s an irritant.
