At first glance, the game seems straightforward and empty, but it’s worth turning on your brain a little — and tactics blossom with new colors. You can blow up a couple of buildings with dynamite to shorten the path for residents to evacuate. You can barricade several blocks, forcing the zombies to crawl along a long route. And sometimes you have to use a risky trick — distract the dead with lonely townspeople-bait, and then cover the horde with a powerful blow.

It is these decisions that turn the game into a real survival sandbox, where every step is given through adrenaline and strategy.

And here is where the main disadvantage of the game appears. Some units after a couple of upgrades turn into real monsters: zombies begin to fall not in dozens, but in hundreds. In my case, the artillery, pumped to the limit, fired so quickly that the cooldown practically disappeared.

Research enhances the effect. They can increase the size of the salvo or speed up the squad’s experience gain. But there are much more practical upgrades, including:

• expanding the capacity of the helicopter so that it does not overflow too quickly;
• accelerating the work of scientists, allowing them to deliver data to the rescue point faster;
• additional bonuses to the speed of unit upgrades, which opens up tactical advantages.

Such improvements make the upgrade system not only powerful, but also strategically important.

Of course, it’s not all that bad. You can play shorter games – up to 6000 points – and then the balance doesn’t have time to “break”. Or you can turn on mutators before the start of the campaign: random zombie spawn points or hardcore mode make each mission noticeably more difficult. Modifications also save the situation. The game is incredibly flexible in customization: any parameter can be changed directly in a text file, and thanks to the built-in mod exchange system, it’s easy to share your developments or download others. Convenient ratings allow you to quickly find the best modifications. For example, I tried the infantry-based mod, and honestly, it felt like I was playing a completely different project.

Overall, the game leaves a very vivid impression. Yes, it has some rough edges, but I haven’t seen the unique style of gameplay that it offers anywhere else.
