In one area, you can see giant structures that look like roots or plant trunks. In the other, there are complex mechanisms that seem to be embedded directly into the biological environment. Sometimes it’s even difficult to understand where nature ends and technology begins.

The first minutes of the game are spent in pure exploration mode. I literally stood still and just looked around. In VR, the scale of such locations feels completely different. When a huge structure grows up in front of you, which goes up somewhere and gets lost in the dark, it makes a much stronger impression than on a regular screen.

It is gradually becoming clear that this world was once part of an advanced civilization. Moreover, the technologies here are based on biological systems, and not on the usual electronics.

But now Bio-Chasm looks like a place that has experienced a serious disaster.

Some mechanisms are unstable, many areas are destroyed, and the creatures that cross the path are clearly not friendly.

The story here is presented quite neatly. There are no huge streams of text or endless dialogues. Instead, the game gives small hints through the environment and found elements of the world.

The mystery of the Grand Arborist and the Ruined Civilization

One of the central elements of the lore is a figure called the Grand Arborist. As you progress, this name begins to appear more often, and it becomes clear that it is related to the management of the Bio-Chasm ecosystem.

Apparently, it was this system that controlled the development of the world and the balance between biology and technology.

But it’s obvious that something didn’t go according to plan.

Some structures appear to be infected or damaged. Defense systems attack everything. Many mechanisms work strangely, as if they have lost control.

And the player gradually finds himself drawn into this story.

Arken Age is in no hurry to reveal all the cards. And this, in my opinion, is the right decision. When you find the fragments of the story yourself, there is a feeling of real discovery.

And sometimes it’s those moments that stick in my memory the most.

Arken Age gameplay — combat, exploration and VR physics

The main reason to play Arken Age is, of course, the gameplay.

The game actively uses the possibilities of virtual reality. Almost everything here is based on the player’s physical actions.

You don’t just press a button to pick up an item. You really need to reach out with your hand, grab it and use it. This may sound like a small thing, but in VR, such details greatly affect the feel of the game.

At some point, you start acting almost automatically. For example, if there is an object nearby, the hand reaches out to it to use it in battle.

Main gameplay elements:

• exploring locations and hidden areas
• physical battles with opponents
• using weapons and environmental objects
• interacting with the mechanisms of the world

Arken Age doesn’t try to make difficult puzzles every step of the way. But from time to time, the game offers situations where you need to think a little and use the environment.

At the same time, the dynamics remains quite high. Sometimes you calmly explore a location, and a minute later you’re fighting off enemies.

And it is precisely these transitions that keep the pace of the game well.

There is no usual attack button here. To hit an enemy, you really need to move your hand. Sometimes you have to get closer, sometimes you have to keep your distance.

The first few battles may seem a bit chaotic. But over time, you start to feel the rhythm of the battle.

Shooting also requires attention. You need to aim, control the position of the weapon and keep an eye out for enemies who may come too close.

Sometimes the game even makes you improvise. For example, if an enemy suddenly appeared nearby, you can simply grab an object and throw it.

And such moments make the battles more lively.

Weapons, modifications, and character development

The development system in Arken Age is quite moderate. It’s not an RPG with a huge skill tree, and to be honest, it’s kind of nice.

The game gradually provides new tools and features without overloading the player with complex menus.

As you progress, different types of weapons and upgrades are revealed. Some of them enhance damage, others add new features.

Among the tools that can be found in the game:

• energy weapons for ranged attacks
• blades and melee devices
• technological gadgets for interacting with the environment
• improvements that increase the effectiveness of the character

The most interesting thing here is how the weapon feels in VR. Even a small difference in shape or mechanics can change the style of the game.

And sometimes you find yourself just experimenting with different options.

Graphics, atmosphere and immersion in virtual reality

Arken Age does not try to impress the player with super realistic graphics. But the game has something that is sometimes more important — a very expressive visual style.

Bio-Chasm looks strange, a bit alien, and sometimes even disturbing.

Some locations resemble huge biological structures within which mechanisms operate. Sometimes it feels like you’re inside a giant organism.

And in VR, it feels especially strong.

When there are huge structures around you that literally hang from above, the scale of the world begins to be perceived in a completely different way.

It is worth noting the sound separately. In the game, you can often hear:

• quiet mechanical vibrations
• strange organic noises
• distant movements of creatures

Sometimes such sounds make you involuntarily look around.

And it’s these little things that create the atmosphere that makes the game world feel alive.

Is it worth playing Arken Age — the result of the review and impressions

After a few hours in the Arken Age, it still feels pretty clear: It’s a game that knows what it wants to be.

She’s not trying to compete with huge AAA projects or make hundreds of hours of content. Instead, the developers focused on creating an interesting VR action game.

And in many ways it worked out.

The game has several strengths:

• physically felt battles
• an unusual and atmospheric world
• good use of VR features
• a pleasant feeling of exploration

Of course, the project is not perfect. Sometimes you want a little more plot or more diverse situations. Besides, VR games always require some getting used to.

But if you already have a VR headset and want to try something atmospheric and unusual, Arken Age is definitely worth paying attention to.

This is one of those games that remind you why you need virtual reality at all. Not for the “wow” effect for five minutes, but for the feeling that you are really inside the game world.
