Perhaps the only attempt to refresh the genre in recent years was Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X., but even it remained merely a tentative bid for leadership. The true king of the arcade skies for two decades has been the legendary Ace Combat series, always considered a purely console domain.

And that’s where the surprise came in: the latest installment in the franchise, Assault Horizon, unexpectedly made its way to PC. For fans who’ve long awaited a breath of fresh air in the genre, this was a true gift. Whatever motivation Namco’s bosses may have found to break with decades-long console tradition, PC gamers can only rejoice: the iconic Ace Combat has finally entered their skies.

Ace Combat has always been more than just a series of flight simulators. Since their appearance in the early 90s, these games have made a whole generation of players fall in love with themselves, giving them a sense of the romance of flying and the drive of aerial combat. Each new part brought not only spectacular duels in the sky, but also original plots, because the developers came up with an alternative version of Earth, where the most incredible scenarios took place: from colossal flying aircraft carriers to falling asteroids and countries with bizarre names. Paradoxically, it was the plot, which seemed optional for the genre, that became one of the main “chips” of the series.

Assault Horizon, unfortunately, breaks out of this tradition. This is the second game in the franchise that takes place not in a fictional world, but in our reality (the first was Joint Strike on PSP). Because of this, the unrestrained fantasy that used to surprise and amaze disappears. No exotic states or crazy technologies — instead, we have a story about the latest weapons of mass destruction, Trinity warheads, comparable to a nuclear arsenal, but devoid of a radiation trace.

The first appearance of these warheads is associated with the joint operation of NATO and Russia in Africa, but it soon becomes clear that a large terrorist organization with the talking name Blatnoi (in the localized version — “New Way”) is behind them. And, of course, the goals of these guys are far from peaceful, and therefore the world is once again on the verge of a global conflict. Alas, there is little intrigue in the plot: it is straightforward, predictable and oversaturated with cliches. Even the participation of Jim Defelis, a military writer known in narrow circles, did not save the story from banality.

But once you take the helm in your hands, all these complaints melt away. Ace Combat has always been different — with fast-paced aerial combat, adrenaline, and scale. No wonder the game was nicknamed “Call of Duty in the sky”. Assault Horizon confirms this nickname one hundred percent: missiles cleave through the clouds, anti-aircraft gun tracers streak the sky, fighter jets maneuver in a frenzied dance of death, and bombers thunder at the target. Enemies appear in waves and immediately turn into clouds of sparkling debris under the blows of your guns. The difficulty is low — it’s not easy to die here, unless you make a mistake with the maneuver yourself.

The Close Range Assault system adds a special drive: when you get close to an enemy, you can literally hit his tail with one click and shoot him. It’s spectacular, even though the opponent knows how to retaliate. Sometimes the hunter becomes the prey, and at such moments the game catches especially strongly.

The developers have tried to dilute the usual aerial missions with new formats. Sometimes the player is given the opportunity to control a Comanche helicopter, raining down a barrage of fire on enemies, or take the place of a heavy weapons operator on an AC-130 and a Black Hawk. Yes, sometimes the camera and helicopter model interfere with the review, but it hardly spoils the gameplay experience. These episodes are perceived more as pleasant additions than as an obligatory part.

In terms of entertainment, Assault Horizon confidently surpasses competitors. Where other games offer standard missions, everything here is as cinematic as possible. Landing at the airfield? That means other planes should be taking off nearby. An aerial duel? Let it take place in the epicenter of the hurricane. Chasing ace? Of course, at extremely low altitude, with flights over the sights. Logic and realism are left out, but the show comes out on top.

As a result, the game is perceived as a continuous kaleidoscope of spectacular scenes, where each mission seems to be created for a trailer. Competitors like H.A.W.X.2 were exhausting and annoying, while Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, on the contrary, held attention until the very end. This is a project that takes place in one breath and leaves a feeling of vivid adventure — that’s why fans love the series.

Game modes and multiplayer features in Ace Combat Assault Horizon

Like it or not, every Ace Combat campaign eventually ends with the triumph of the “right” heroes. But what if your heart still aches for the sky and your thirst for aerial combat lingers? There are two paths to take: replay the story using already unlocked aircraft and new weapons, or head into multiplayer, where the adrenaline rush is overflowing and boredom is guaranteed.

There are four online game modes. Domination and Deathmatch—classics of the genre, but with a distinctive aviation flavor. There’s also co-op for up to four pilots. However, the real highlight is Capital Conquest, a reworked mode from Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation. Here, two sides—the New Russian Federation and NATO—fight for control of capital cities like Moscow or Washington. Each team defends its own base, and the enemy’s ultimate goal is to destroy it. The entire arsenal is put to use: from fighters and helicopters to B-1B and B-2 Spirit heavy bombers. The latter only appear in the later stages, and while they are vulnerable on their own, with the right support from allies they can be used to create a resounding and spectacular finale.

To add depth to battles, the developers implemented a talent system: accelerated gun cooling, advanced targeting systems, and much more. Points for these are earned in battle, and some upgrades can be shared among the entire team, turning a squad into a true fighting machine. Customization wasn’t forgotten either: you can customize your “bird” or choose from a selection of pre-made designs, ranging from the understated to the most extravagant.

Of course, there are critics. One of my colleagues recently jokingly chided me for raving about Assault Horizon: it’s all “BANG-BANG” without any soul. And to a certain extent, he’s right. There’s little new gaming experience here, the plot isn’t particularly dramatic, and there certainly aren’t any intellectual puzzles. But it’s worth looking at the project from a different perspective. Ace Combat is a vibrant action film in the vein of Michael Bay films, where the level of spectacle, the number of explosions, and the intensity of events are off the charts. In this genre, the game reigns supreme: H.A.W.X. is left far behind, Call of Duty looks modest, and Battlefield 3 and Medal of Honor: Warfighter are completely lost in the face of this unbridled action. The series has a special charm and appeal that can’t be faked. That’s its magic.

The bottom line is simple: Ace Combat isn’t about deep stories, it’s about drive, dynamics, and spectacle. And while we wait for new projects from Project Aces, there’s only one thing left to do: take a seat in the cockpit and soar into the sky. Welcome aboard!
