Illari Overwatch 2 is a support character and the youngest heroine in the team. In the original it is called as Ilari with recognition among fans.

The history and origin of Illari

Illari became the 38th hero of Overwatch, and was added to the collection in August 2023. The developers made the first mention of it back in May of the same year, intriguing fans with short hints. At the time of release, Illari had few lines with other characters, and her story almost did not overlap with the main plot, which gave the heroine an aura of mystery.

The girl’s real name is Illari Quispi Ruiz, she is only 18 years old. She hails from the small Peruvian town of Runasapi. Her name is symbolic — in translation it means “dawn” or “beginning”, which perfectly reflects her path.

The Order of Inti and the Tragic Initiation

In Peru, there was an ancient order of Inti, worshippers of the Sun God. His students underwent a special ceremony, after which they received the ability to store solar power in their bodies, charge weapons with it, and control the energy of light. Illari was one of the most gifted students — the sages of the order saw in her the future of Inti.

But the day of initiation turned into a tragedy. When Illari stood on the pedestal, the ritual device could not withstand the power of her energy. There was an explosion, and in an instant the temple turned into ruins. All the participants of the ceremony died, and Illari remained the last of the order.

The burden of power and guilt

From that moment on, Illari gained the power of the Sun, but with it a sense of guilt. She blames herself for the deaths of her loved ones and still carries this pain. This can be seen even in her short dialogues with other characters, for example, with May, who lost her colleagues at the Arctic station. Their conversation is filled with quiet understanding and empathy— both know what it’s like to survive when you shouldn’t.

The Solar Warrior and her Chunyo

Having an inner pain, Illari was and will be a heroine of light. In the game, she has a pet llama named Chunyo. Sometimes, before a fight, she mentions him in remarks, and on the festive skins, you can see cute drawings of a llama — a touching detail that reminds you of her warm soul behind her harsh armor.

VPEsport recommends: Don’t miss the chance to play as Illari, a heroine in whose soul the light of the sun fights with the shadow of guilt.

Illari’s Abilities and Weapons in Overwatch

Illari’s plus weapon is the Solar Rifle. A long-range weapon with an automatic charge with damage up to 75 units per second at a distance of 30-50 meters. With an accurate hit to the head, the damage becomes 1.5 times greater. The magazine holds 16 charges, and it takes 1.8 seconds to recharge. The rate of fire depends on the degree of charge: from 1.11 to 2 rounds per second.

Illari’s abilities

Illari has a set of skills in her arsenal that make her dangerous even for experienced players.:

  • “Solar Rifle”
  • “Outburst of anger”
  • “The Captive Sun”
  • “Healing Station”
  • “Alternative fire support”

A quick dash towards the enemy with a chance to get closer, but also pushes the enemy away, dealing 10 points of damage. The skill can be used every 7 seconds. However, the effect does not work if the heroine is attracted to the Weaver of Life.

Illari's abilities Overwatch

“The Captive Sun”

Illari’s main ulta. The range is 8 meters, the cost is 2420 points. When activated, the heroine jumps, hovers in the air for up to 4 seconds and releases a fireball that causes powerful damage. Once hit, opponents slow down and take additional damage during the duration of the mark.

In the process of levitation, Illari is able to use her other skills, but if the heroine is stunned or uses the skills of rivals, the effect of the ulta is completely interrupted.

“Healing Station”

A special device that restores 50 health points per second to allies. The standard recharge time is 8 seconds, and if the station is destroyed — 12 seconds. Illari can fix it on some surfaces, but when the support is destroyed, the device falls to the ground.

An interesting detail: the station can be destroyed manually, as well as interrupted in other ways. For example, B.O.B. destroys the station in a collision, Brigitte’s shield strike or Reinhardt’s jerk stuns for milliseconds, and Sombra is able to hack the device for 10 seconds. However, abilities such as Kinetic Capture, Defensive Matrix, Spear rotation, or Deflection do not directly harm the station, but block healing rays.

“Alternative fire support”

Illari releases a healing ray that restores 120 health points per second to an ally if you hold it precisely on target. The skill is effective at medium range and fully recharges in 3 seconds. You can also activate it when it is not fully charged, reducing the duration of operation.

Tips and Tricks for Illari in Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 Illari Blast

Mastering the solar Illari rifle with the end of time. Maximum damage from the main shooting mode, you need to give the weapon a full charge. Each shot requires a short pause, like a breath before impact. Learn to take a pause of about a second between volleys and correctly combine it with reloading after secondary fire — this is the secret of stable DPS.

The only exception is when the enemy is about to disappear from sight and he has only a couple of drops of health left. In such a situation, you can shoot until fully charged: sometimes a moment decides the outcome of a duel. The same applies to the moments when the damage from Sunstruck is close to the threshold value — then an early shot is also justified.

The secondary shot of the solar rifle will have a different energy balance vector, as when controlling the overheating of the Oriza thermonuclear core. Use the healing ray in short bursts to pull your allies from the brink of death and give yourself time to recharge. At this time, your pylon or the support of other healers will help them, replenishing the rest of their health.

Illari’s fire will be less powerful, and since the heroine has no self-defense skills, the Outburst becomes her salvation. The style allows you to jump back, confuse a jumping DPS or attacking tank, and, if necessary, step aside, dodging AoE damage.

Captured Sun: The Art of Timing

Like all Illari’s weapons, her Captive Sun ulta requires a perfect sense of the moment. The more enemies are exposed to Sunstroke, the higher the chance of setting off a chain reaction of explosions, where one detonation pulse triggers another. When combined with ults capable of grouping enemies, such as Orisa’s Terra Surge or Dawn’s Gravitonic Surge, the effect becomes devastating.

The Best Illari Combinations in Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 Illari and other heroes

Illari + Orisa

Orisa is mostly the best with Illari: her self-defense abilities will give the dome a barrage of damage while Illari replenishes her health. And the combination of Captive Sun and Terra Surge makes this duet a real storm.

Orisa’s main problem is that enemies often manage to escape from the range of her ulta. But if they are hit by a Sunstroke, one precise finish is enough — and a chain reaction will destroy everyone who gets into the radius.

Illari + Zarya

Zarya, like Orisa, is able to withstand the pressure of opponents while Illari replenishes her health reserves. Her Graviton surge literally gathers the enemies into one pile, creating ideal conditions for the Captive Sun.

If the enemies are already under the effect of Sunstroke, a series of explosions is successful.

Illari + Sombra

The combination of Illari and Sombra seems unusual, but it works amazing. Sombra’s Ulta — EMP — perfectly complements the Captive Sun. Although the Reaper’s Death Flower and Headlight Squall deal more damage, AMY’s advantage is in speed and range.

It quickly removes 40% of enemies’ health and can trigger an explosive Sunstruck reaction. Moreover, AMY disables purification abilities, depriving enemies of a chance to escape from the Captive Sun.

Illari + Sigma

Sigma acts the other way around: its Gravitational flow should be activated after a Sunstroke. The radius of the ulta is large, and this is enough to finish off the enemies marked with the effect. Damage caused by falling from a height can cause a series of secondary explosions, turning the battlefield into blinding chaos.

Illari + Cassidy

One of Cassidy’s weak points remains the vulnerability of his Dead Eye — experienced players easily hide themselves. But the Sunstroke effect compensates for this, adding up to 120 damage points even with a partially charged ult.

As a high-damage point shooter, Cassidy works well in tandem with Illari, their coordinated attacks destroy weakened opponents. And even without an ultimatum, two shots to the body or one to the head can cause a Sunstruck condition.

Opponents to be on your guard against

Illari has solar-powered enemy parameters and is strong in front of tank heroes when trying to “dive” into melee combat. Her low rate of fire and lack of defensive skills make her an easy target for fighters like D.Va, Winston and the Fist of Rock. These heroes not only quickly close the distance, but also know how to effectively neutralize her abilities.

Doomfist is able to chase Illari using the Flash. The Winston barrier does not heal the healing pylon, but the protective matrix D.Va easily absorbs the “Captured sun” in flight.

Among the heroes of DPS, Illari does not have an easy time against dexterous opponents like Genji — it is difficult to shoot him at close range, and quick attacks easily penetrate the healing pylon. Echo is also dangerous, whose flights allow her to shoot down even a well-installed pylon. In addition, Illari becomes an excellent target for her ultimate “Duplicate”.

The heroes that Illari is able to defeat

Heavy hitscan damage makes Illari a formidable opponent for many DPS heroes. In the hands of an accurate player, she is able to literally hold the enemy at gunpoint. Like Baptiste, Illari can exert pressure on the Headlight, forcing it to retreat or fall in the air under the aimed shots of the solar rifle.

Illari has no priority for close combat, Tracer and Sombra remain strong ahead of a series of accurate shots. Their poor vertical mobility and short health often leave them no chance. Even if Sombra tries to hack Illari, it won’t stop her healing pylon, which will continue to support her allies.

In battles against tanks and support forces, Illari relies on a combination of mobility, damage, and sustained healing. Reinhardt only becomes a problem when her pylon is out of range of his Rocket Hammer, in which case he has to either retreat or waste his abilities. This Zenyatta, with its large hitbox, weak defense, and limited health, becomes easy prey: Illari’s solar rifle pierces it almost effortlessly.

Conclusion

Illari is a support character in Overwatch who appeared in the game in 2023. Her abilities make her a powerful ally: she can not only heal her comrades, but also inflict significant damage on enemies.

You can unlock Illari at level 1 of the paid Battle Pass or at level 45 of the free one.

Overwatch 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
