Passage to the main fortress of the Old Camp in Gothic 1 Remake isn’t given away for nothing. To get Diego to put in a good word for you with the local guards and officially become a Shadow (part of the large-scale quest “Casting Shadows”), you’ll have to run around and collect guarantees. One of the fastest ways to gain reputation is to help the Whistler retrieve his favorite blade from a dealer’s clutches.

How to avoid screwing up the quest at the start?

It all begins in the marketplace. First, talk to the Whistler near his hut, then go find Fisk—he’s usually warming himself by the fire in the market. The client will generously hand you 100 ore nuggets for the ransom. It would seem like a classic “give and take.”

But there are some complications. The cunning Fisk immediately changes the terms of the deal and demands 110 ore nuggets for the return.

Fisk demanding more ore

Critical moment: don’t even think about complaining! If you even question the price, the merchant will tell you to get lost and flatly refuse to hand over the weapon. The outcome is predictable: the mission is a failure, with no replay option.

All the possible outcomes: is it possible to cheat the Whistler out of money?

This short mission offers plenty of unpredictable outcomes. The game allows you to play as either a reliable mercenary or an outright con man.

Choices and Consequences

Your Choice Consequences
Pay extra and return the sword to its owner Best choice. You receive 200 experience, and Whistler firmly vouches for you in front of Diego. The quest is completed.
Run away with 110 ore nuggets Whistler becomes furious and starts a fight. If you knock him out without killing him, you lose 80 experience. Funny enough, Diego will be genuinely impressed by your criminal talent.
Keep the redeemed blade for yourself No fight happens. However, the quest is guaranteed to be marked as failed.
Return the ore if Fisk refuses the deal A bloodless failure. Whistler takes his money back, but he does not become your enemy.
Start bargaining with Fisk He instantly refuses to sell. The task is ruined.

In short, the most profitable option is to add ten from your wallet, give the piece of iron to Whistler, and get some easy experience. The sword itself is frankly so-so in terms of stats, so there’s no point in ruining a playthrough just for it. Stealing someone else’s ore and getting punched in the face by a disgruntled quest giver is also a dubious pleasure. But the choice, as always, is yours.
