Elden Ring received a surprise patch—and it’s not about new content. FromSoftware quietly announced update 1.16.2, which will be released after maintenance. Servers will be down at 3:00 AM in New York City for three hours.

Technical Changes in FromSoftware Patch 1.16.2

The developers focused on stability. The official announcement (yes, on Twitter/X) listed “fixes for issues that could cause freezes, unexpected crashes, or rendering anomalies under certain conditions.” Sound boring? Actually, it’s exactly what was needed. Nothing throws you off your game more than crashing in the middle of a fight with Malenia.

FromSoftware thanked players for their patience. And this isn’t just polite—the patch should genuinely improve quality of life. Without bugs, even an old game feels different.

Reasons for optimizing Elden Ring ahead of its new release

Elden Ring was released in 2022, and in the four years since, we’ve had major updates, the massive Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, and crossovers. The game isn’t even five years old yet, but it feels like an eternity. So much content has been dumped on the table that some fans still haven’t unlocked it all.

And now, here’s a new update—no new weapons, no bosses. But there’s a catch. Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition is coming out very soon—a remaster, apparently with compiled patches. It’s only natural that FromSoftware is currently polishing the base game’s stability. This is to prevent newcomers from complaining about crashes, and veterans from ruefully remembering old bugs.

So yes, the patch is small, but timely. And if you’re still playing through Elden Ring for the tenth time, maintenance starting at 10:00 AM Moscow time is a good reason to take a coffee break.

Fan Theories About Secret Content

The comments following the announcement sparked heated debate. “Hmm, are you preparing the servers for something?” one player squinted. Another chimed in: “The fact that they specifically stated that the maintenance doesn’t bring new content actually gives me hope. Maybe they’re preparing for something bigger?” A third offered a whole theory: maintenance starts, and then—bam—additional content appears. Sounds like a conspiracy, don’t you agree?

FromSoftware is keeping mum for now. No confirmation, no denial.

Development of the game for Switch 2 and The Duskbloods

Apparently, the second option is closer to the truth—a pure quality-of-life improvement. The studio has its hands full right now: preparing Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition and simultaneously finishing the Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive The Duskbloods. Releasing surprise DLC for Elden Ring as well? Unlikely. Although… people used to think the same about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. And then Blood and Wine came out. But that’s more of an exception.

The game’s future after four years of support

For now, patch 1.16.2 remains a routine performance and stability update. But who knows. This is Elden Ring, after all. You can expect anything from it—even after four years and a ton of content.

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition Contents

The big announcement from the April 2, 2025, Nintendo Direct is slowly taking shape. FromSoftware’s iconic action game will officially arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2 portable platform sometime in 2026. The developers are adapting the graphics to the new system requirements and fully expanding the game’s content.

The new edition will include the original title and the massive Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. Plus, exclusive cosmetics will be added: three new skins for Torrent’s trusty steed, four armor sets, hidden combat techniques, and new weapons. Fans of unique builds will definitely appreciate the two starting classes—Heavy Knight and Knight of Ides.

Incidentally, there’s no need to worry about the port’s technical condition. At Gamescom 2025, early demos were incredibly laggy, dropping the frame rate in the open world to a disgraceful 15 FPS. The developers caught on just in time and delayed the release. Recent previews confirm that optimization has been improved to a solid level.

Tarnished Pack Release on PC and Consoles

Yes, the exclusivity will be temporary. FromSoftware confirmed that they have no plans to abandon their core fanbase. All new content, including the Heavy Knight and Knight of Ides classes, will arrive on PC, PS5, PS4, and Xbox as a separate paid bundle.

The bundle will be released under the name “Tarnished Pack” and will have a very modest price tag. The plan is simple: owners of the Nintendo Switch 2 hybrid console will receive the pack first, right at launch, and other platforms will pick it up a little later. You definitely won’t have to spend money on a new portable for a pair of armor.

Performance Optimization in Update 1.16.2

While the studio is polishing future releases, a purely technical update has been released for current platforms. The new patch, 1.16.2, is lightweight and focused entirely on engine stability. Gameplay mechanics, weapon balance, and boss AI have been left untouched this time around—your favorite build will remain intact. The developers have patched the main technical issues that have been actively reported by the community in recent weeks.

What Changed in the Game Current Status After Update 1.16.2
Desktop crashes and random game crashes Fully resolved on all platforms
Sudden freezes in heavy scenes Fixed, engine stability improved
Graphic artifacts and rendering bugs Localized and eliminated
Equipment and magic stat balance Left unchanged
PvP, PvE, and matchmaking algorithms No adjustments were made
Save files and in-game progress Fully safe and protected

Installing the update and transferring saves

The process is fully automated. The popular digital store Steam will automatically download the files as soon as you launch the game. The same automatic download scheme works on home consoles: PS5, PS4, and Xbox Series X|S.

However, there is one caveat. If the console is in power-saving mode and background update downloads are disabled, you’ll have to go to the game tile’s context menu and initiate the download manually. To ensure everything went smoothly, look in the lower-right corner of the main menu—it should read “App Ver. 1.16.2.”

As for saved progress, there were no unpleasant surprises. Technical patches in the 1.16.x series work exclusively with the codebase and memory optimizations, without affecting the structure of your character files. In three years of active support, FromSoftware has never broken any player saves with such patches. Of course, uploading a fresh backup to the Steam or PS Plus cloud is always a good idea, but this is more of a basic gaming habit than a real necessity.
