The second act expansion for Baldur’s Gate 3 has been postponed again. One of the most ambitious fan projects for the game is not on time for the previously scheduled deadlines — and, apparently, it will have to wait longer than the fans expected.

Ambitions have grown over the course of development

Modder SquallyDaBeanz, who is working on the Baldur’s Gate 3: Act Two Expansion project, confirmed that the original plan has grown significantly.

The idea to expand the second act of the game gradually turned into a much larger task. During the development process, the author began to recycle ready—made elements and add new ones, including additional quests and NPCs that were not originally planned.

This is a classic story for major mods: the further the work progresses, the more ideas appear — and the more difficult it is to keep the project within the framework.

The release goes to the right again

Back in September last year, the developer postponed the release to 2026. Now it became clear that this guideline turned out to be too optimistic.

According to the author, “things are going well,” but a release in the first half of the year is almost out of the question. There is no exact new date yet, which is not surprising for a project of this scale.

Restrictions for the sake of stability

In order not to inflate the development endlessly, the modder decided to “restrain” his ambitions a little.

The main change is that the new story choices will not affect the main game outside of the added location. That is:

  • New events will be offline;
  • The characters won’t move on to the third act;
  • The consequences of the decisions will remain within the expansion.

This approach allows you to maintain a balance between scale and realistic deadlines.

Why is this important?

Fan projects for Larian Studios often become almost full—fledged add-ons – and this case is no exception.

Act Two Expansion already looks like an attempt to rethink part of the game, rather than just add content. But it is precisely because of this that development is delayed: the level of ambition is growing faster than it is possible to produce a result.

For now, we can only wait and hope that the final version will really meet expectations.
