Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will be released on August 27 – and now you can already evaluate what the prequel looks like in action. VGC published thirty minutes of new gameplay, and the video gives a clear idea of what to expect from the new part. The action takes place fifteen years before the events of the original duology, and the main character was Sofia, the same pirate who helped Amicia and Hugo in Requiem. Only now she is not yet a captain, but a smuggler who embarks on a dangerous journey to understand her own past.

Analysis of thirty minutes of gameplay of the prequel A Plague Tale

The video appears to have been cut from the fifth chapter. Sofia, together with her friend Leni, explores ancient ruins – there are gloomy vaults, ruins all around, and in the air hangs that very oppressive atmosphere for which the series is loved. But instead of the usual stealth and tactical hiding from rats, there are more open skirmishes and active exploration. The heroines fight enemies, solve puzzles – and all this looks more dynamic than in previous parts.
How does the Minoan Sphere work in the new Resonance?
One of the key features will be a mysterious artifact called the Minoan Sphere. It is used to activate mechanisms and puzzles that involve light – sort of like an interactive flashlight, only with trickier interactions. It is around this area that a significant part of the research elements is built. It looks intriguing: the developers are trying to diversify the gameplay without losing the spirit of the originals.
Dual Timeline mechanics and passage for Theseus
The Minoan sphere turned out to be just the tip of the iceberg. VGC journalists and Wccftech authors, after personally getting to know the game, confirmed that the developers rolled out a ton of mechanics that have never been seen in the series. The main surprise is the Dual-Timeline system, which completely changes the perception of the narrative. While exploring the dark labyrinth of the Minotaur near Crete, Sofia suddenly catches flashbacks and is transported back in time. In these segments, control passes to Theseus, the legendary hero who cleared this labyrinth two thousand years before the events of the main game.

Theseus has his own style entirely. The hero received a unique motion set, exclusive opponents and fierce arena battles with an emphasis on mythology. The demo version only shows a short episode, but the very fact of regularly changing eras and protagonists looks unprecedented for the franchise.
Combat system Resonance action mechanics Sofia

The combat has finally mutated into a full-fledged action game. Now Sofia skillfully wields a pair of blades. A regular sword is responsible for basic attack chains, and a dagger is used for Critical Strike – crushing finishes on exposed targets. Battles are tied to the control of two enemy scales – Life and Stun. The stun parameter gradually decreases, but if you fill it to the limit, the enemy will be knocked out for several seconds. The easiest way to fill this scale is with a perfect parry. A standard parry fills it drop by drop, but a well-timed block of the “yellow attack” instantly knocks out the opponent. This trick will not work with red attacks – only dodging will save you from them. Classic hardcore logic.
The arsenal of techniques has expanded significantly. A regular kick easily destroys an enemy block, and a multifunctional harpoon (grapnel) allows you to attract targets to traps or push unwary archers off cliffs. Stealth faded into the background. In the 30-minute gameplay, stealth worked only as a spectacular opening to the battle – Sofia jumps on the enemy from above and eliminates him, but it is no longer possible to quietly massacre the entire camp. But any knocked-out weapon can be picked up and launched at the next enemy in order to inflict damage and Stun on him.
Upgrading your character Resonance Points and all perks
Character development is built around Resonance Points, scattered in secret corners of locations. In the test build, journalists examined three of the six available perks:
Each skill has two additional specialization paths. In addition, Sofia can equip six types of accessories with the following bonuses:
-
Beads – gives a passive chance that an enemy arrow will fly past;
-
Arm Bands – significantly expands the timing for successful parrying;
-
Bracelets – increases critical damage from Critical Strike;
-
Trinkets – leaves a unit of health when receiving a fatal blow;
-
Seals – increases the likelihood of throwing items dropping from corpses;
-
Pierced Coins – unique coins that remained blocked in the preview.
Riddles of Daedalus and horror elements of the labyrinth
The gameplay and exploration of locations are tied to the properties of the Minoan sphere. The island was designed by the architect Daedalus as a huge puzzle, and Sofia constantly consults her ship’s notebook so as not to get lost in the passages. There is a clear taste of the cult Tomb Raider.
However, in the sixth chapter the rules change dramatically. Sofia falls to the lower tiers of the island, where pure horror begins: the heroine is pursued by an invulnerable creature that is afraid only of bright light. It’s a direct nod to the rat infestation and Prima Macula curse from previous installments, but transferred to a completely new action framework.

The story of the smuggler Sofia in the game’s plot
For fans of the series, the appearance of Sofia as the protagonist is a pleasant surprise. In Requiem, she was remembered as a daring and charismatic ally, and now we will be shown how she became that “captain”. Judging by the first impressions of journalists, Resonance places more emphasis on adventure and action than on stealth. But the rats, of course, are not going anywhere – the atmosphere of hopelessness and plague remains with us.
Release date for Resonance A Plague Tale Legacy on PC and PS5
The development is carried out by Asobo Studio, which did not disappoint this time either. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is set to release on August 27, 2026. The game will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC – and, best of all, will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. So subscribers of the service will be able to pick it up at no additional cost. It looks like a warm summer awaits us, and it will end with a powerful dose of adventure in a world where plague and rats are far from the most terrible enemies.
