The scriptwriters, however, deliberately do not specify the exact time frame, creating the feeling of an independent, full-fledged chapter in a world where people have been replaced by anthropomorphic animals. It’s the turbulent fifties: the country has not yet recovered from World War II, but New York is bustling with life. This city combines the brilliance of shop windows and the soot of factory pipes, sparkling prospects and deadly traps, honest work and corruption corroding from within. And in a place like this, a private investigator never has a quiet season.

The beginning of another day looks almost routine: a cigarette is burning in my mouth, an angry rhinoceros is banging on the door demanding to destroy compromising photographs — a typical morning for Blacksad. And, of course, a new client. Joe Dunn, the owner of a local boxing club, was found hanged. Despite the fact that the city writes off someone’s life every day, John’s inner instinct clearly tells him that this is not suicide. Especially considering the strange behavior of Sonya Dunn, the daughter of the deceased, cold and reserved, as if she had lost a distant acquaintance, not her father. The detective had no time to take the first sip of coffee, as he had already found the first suspect.

Under the Skin takes its time. It’s a slow, viscous noir adventure that rocks gradually. It takes the first hour not even to find the killer, but to prove that Dunn’s death was indeed violent. Intuition—even feline intuition—is not an argument enough for others. Gradually, new characters appear in the frame: some are recognized by fans of the original comic, others are absolute beginners, but they all fit into the plot organically.

It’s easier to die here than it seems: you miss the QTE, you make a mistake in the dialogue, and the scene starts all over again. The moments when a weapon is aimed at the hero are especially dangerous: every word can be the last. It’s just a pity that it’s not always clear which options will lead to a hopeless situation. Sometimes the game offers a “choice,” but only one path is truly safe, which makes the fork a formality.

Sometimes the right step is not at all obvious. In the first half of the passage, the question periodically arises: what exactly does the game expect from you? There is a slight nostalgia for the old adventure quests. Perhaps this is the legacy of Péndulo Studios, the authors of the Runaway series. But the echoes of the past benefit the project: a detective needs to be able to think outside the box, compare evidence and build logical chains. This ability is even included in a separate mechanic.

And although it is impossible to misinterpret the evidence here, each player’s path still develops a little differently. Some decisions don’t give you complete freedom, but the fates of the characters change noticeably depending on the actions — and the script sometimes turns out to be surprisingly cruel. History is not afraid of bloody reversals and powerful plot blows.

Unfortunately, the impression is noticeably worsened due to technical problems, which are especially evident closer to the finale. The game’s sound regularly crashes, which is critical for a project that consists of half dialogue scenes. Sometimes only the voiceover disappears, sometimes the entire audio sequence disappears. At the same time, the game is unexpectedly demanding of hardware for its graphics. The publisher assures that the release patch will fix most of the bugs, and I want to believe that it will be so.

Blacksad: Under the Skin is both a high-quality adaptation of the original graphic novel and an independent game that can interest even those who have never held the original source in their hands. The only thing that spoils the final impression is the numerous technical roughness, which, hopefully, will be fixed by future updates.

The game is fully localized in Russian, but the localization quality turned out to be far from ideal. The text itself is translated with dignity, although from time to time there are mistakes like incorrectly agreed words. But most of all, dubbing knocks out the atmosphere.
