It’s hard to find a gamer who hasn’t heard of the legendary Need for Speed series at least once. For some, it’s the iconic Porsche Unleashed; for others, it’s the iconic Underground with its signature “eron-don-don,” which became the symbol of an entire era of street racing. Once you’ve tried this arcade racing simulator, it’s impossible to forget the feeling of speed, drive, and freedom.
However, time is not kind to even great series. After the release of Shift (2009) and Hot Pursuit (2010), the franchise gradually lost its former luster. New projects were released regularly, but rarely delivered anything truly remarkable. Competitors appeared on the horizon, each with their own bright ideas and fresh mechanics, and the battle for fans’ attention became increasingly fierce.
Nevertheless, EA has no intention of giving up its position. The company continues to release new titles, trying to restore Need for Speed to the very magic for which millions fell in love. The latest attempt to breathe life into the series is Need for Speed: Payback, a game that promises to be a new chapter in the history of the iconic racing game.

The plot in car simulators is rarely in the foreground. Usually this is either a story about how a daring novice makes his way step by step to the top of the racing Olympus, or a painfully familiar story about betrayal, money and the desire for a beautiful life. It’s pointless to look for charismatic characters, unexpected turns and dramatic denouements in the genre — racing loves other “turns”, the very ones that await the player on the tracks.
Need for Speed: Payback does not break this tradition. Here, too, there are beautiful girls, fast cars, and the obligatory dose of betrayal. The events take place in the fictional town of Fortuna Valley, the largest open world in the history of the series. This is where the street racing team enjoys the adrenaline rush: drift, off-road, underground racing. But behind the fun lies the downside — carjacking, dirty deals and fake races.
The idyll collapses in a moment. A criminal cartel called Dom, which controls the city, uses the racers for its own purposes and eventually betrays them. For the heroes, this is a blow below the belt, and they have no choice but to rise from the very bottom to prove that even the “little fish” have teeth with which to bite. The outcome is known in advance — the villains will be punished, justice will prevail. But the path to this will not be easy.

Interestingly, the plot is built around three characters at once.
-
Tyler is nominally the main character, a classic racer without unnecessary features.
-
Jess is a former police officer who has turned into a master of evading cops and craves risk.
-
Sean is a pro in drift and cross—country racing.
Depending on the type of check-in, the driver gets behind the wheel who is better at the task. Sometimes the game forces you to switch between them right in the middle of a mission, adding drive and dynamics.
However, there are also controversial points. The characters constantly communicate with each other right during the races. Instead of enhancing the atmosphere, the endless chatter sometimes gets off-kilter and looks strange: it’s difficult to perceive philosophical conversations when the car is racing under 200 km/h and barely enters a turn.
But in the end, it would be too naive to blame the arcade car simulator for the banality of the plot. The story here is just a backdrop for the main thing — speed, excitement and endless chases. But what the game can really be praised or criticized for is a separate conversation.

Open world and exploration in NFS Payback
In Need for Speed: Payback, everything revolves around specialization. And this applies not only to the heroes of the story, but also to their iron partners — cars. Each car here is designed for its own role: fast track racing, spectacular drift, straight-line drag, off-road conquering or intense chases. Missions are also divided into these classes — there are five types of them in total. Sometimes there are unique tasks: for example, to steal a sports car directly from a trailer on the move. But such episodes are a rare luxury. To get to the plot points, you will have to practice the races in the usual disciplines more than once.
Each storyline follows a pattern: a series of races plus a duel with the “boss” at the finale. It will not be difficult for experienced virtual pilots to pass them — the opponents are not too aggressive, and in some places they even play “giveaway”. You can drive perfectly or collect bumper turns, and closer to the finish line, for some reason, the leaders slow down, allowing you to bypass them without any problems.
For winning, the player receives car upgrade parts and a portion of virtual money. Losing is not so terrible — it also drips a little money, so you will not be able to completely “reset”. For those who like to take risks, there are side bets: for example, to stay first for a certain time or to drive a section on two wheels in a drag race.

In addition to the tasks, you can just drive around the map. She’s not big, but she’s nowhere near the scale of The Crew. Despite the promises of an open world and the availability of SUVs, there are always restrictions: somewhere a fence blocks the road, somewhere an invisible wall. So freedom is conditional — there are areas where you can break away, and there are places where “entry is prohibited.”
A separate entertainment is police chases. They appear either in special missions or as part of other assignments. Alas, there’s not much adrenaline here: opponents act predictably and are more of a hindrance than a real threat. These are not the legendary cops from Most Wanted, but rather extras who explode beautifully on the sidelines. Sometimes cartel cars are used instead of the police, but the essence remains the same.
There are other racers on the roads. You can challenge them and arrange a spontaneous competition. There are also old car bodies hidden in the world — you need to collect spare parts using only fragmentary hints on the map. These machines are not the fastest, but the search process itself is fascinating and motivates you to explore the map to the last corner.
Still, it’s difficult to call Payback a benchmark racing sandbox. Despite the scale, the game loses to the same The Crew, which even years later looks more whole and alive.
Tuning and customization in Payback: how to turn a car into a masterpiece
What can captivate a player in a car simulator besides fast-paced racing? The answer is obvious to those who once hung out in the iconic Underground: of course, tuning and customization! In Payback, the developers have devoted a whole layer of gameplay to this, dividing it into two areas — visual changes and technical improvements.
Visual customization: creating the style of your dreams
The garage opens up a whole world of possibilities for those who like to tinker with the exterior of the “iron horse”. Here you can go wild: change the body color, add unique stickers and vinyls, adjust the shade of the tinting, or even put an unusual license plate. For fans of the parts, replacement of body elements is provided — thresholds, bumpers, spoilers. The wheels are also not spared: vary the size of the tires, choose the discs and calipers to suit your taste.

All these features do not affect speed or handling, but they give you the feeling when your car reflects your style. After all, it is much more pleasant to race along the highway in a spectacular “car” than in a gray and faceless car, even if it is faster.
Technical tuning: a step deeper into mechanics
With the technical part, everything is a little more complicated and interesting. Firstly, the player can adjust the characteristics of the car for himself: adjust the sensitivity of the steering wheel, downforce and other parameters. This allows you to customize cars for different types of races and tracks.
Secondly, one of the six key parts of the car can be replaced in the workshops. Each of them has a different quality and directly affects the level of the machine, which varies from 100 to 400. It is this indicator that the game takes into account when launching story races, hinting at whether the chosen transport is suitable. But, as practice shows, it’s not always worth believing the numbers — a skilled racer can beat an opponent even in a car at a lower level.
Tuning problems: farm or donation
However, customization has a downside. When there are not enough funds to buy new cars, and spare parts for old cars are scarce, the player is faced with a choice: endlessly “farm” the same races for money and random parts, or open loot boxes. The latter, of course, generously give out currency, tokens and key elements, but in most cases they require real money. Free boxes are rare.
It turns out a dilemma: either invest, or ride in a circle until the excitement runs out. Many people end up choosing the third option — just postpone the game and wait for something more honest and exciting.

Multiplayer: the hope that failed
It would seem that the online mode should have been the salvation, but the situation there is no better. The matchmaking system does not hesitate to combine cars with a huge difference in level into one race. And again, to win, you have to return to the same exhausting farm of parts.
Is NFS Payback worth playing in 2025?
A variety of car models, an impressive fleet and rich visual customization options would seem to be an excellent base for a successful project. But in the case of Need for Speed Payback, this was not enough. Beyond tuning and car selection, the game loses momentum: the graphics look outdated, the physics of the cars are simplified to the limit, and there is no sense of drive in the controls.
The developers’ attempt to keep the players’ attention on the plot also failed. The story of revenge on the “House” with three different main characters does not cause emotions: you follow what is happening without much interest, and the protracted dialogues during the races even begin to annoy. Even worse, every time you repeat a task, you have to listen to it all over again.

The bottom line is simple: if you take the Payback apart, each of them will turn out to be only a weak repetition of familiar mechanics. We’ve seen all this before, whether in previous installments of NFS or in projects from other studios. Therefore, it is not surprising that many fans have a thought: maybe it’s time to give the legendary series a break?
Strengths:
-
a large selection of cars;
-
advanced customization options;
-
separate story missions.
Weaknesses:
-
boring and vague plot;
-
Repetitive and annoying dialogues during races;
-
artificially prolonged passage due to the pumping system;
-
primitive physics of machines;
-
featureless graphics.
