The Bastion is not just a fortress, but an island floating in the sky, towering over the ruins of the country that was called Selondia before the Catastrophe. At its heart is the Monument, whose power was fed by special cores now scattered across the most remote corners of the world. This place was once conceived as a refuge where survivors could flock in times of great trouble. But fate decreed otherwise – only one man, known as the Lad, responded.

Waking up one day in a world that was falling apart, he saw only fragments of reality emerging from the void right under his feet. His name was simply – Lad. Grabbing his trusty hammer and throwing a homemade musket over his shoulder, he rushed towards Bastion. Along the way, he kicked away bizarre creatures and collected fragments of former greatness, unaware that he had already become the hero of someone’s story.
This story was told by the only living inhabitant of Bastion – the Storyteller. His hoarse, enveloping voice accompanied every step of the young man, turning a set of levels into a coherent story about betrayal, injustice and repentance. Today you rarely encounter such a technique, and for it to be done so masterfully – even more so.

When the voiceover fell silent, the baton was taken up by the music. Composer Darren Korb called his style “acoustic frontier trip-hop” – and this definition is probably the best one possible. In this mix, electronics meet acoustic guitar, banjo, Arabic motifs and rare ethnic samples. The eastern wind brings the melodies of the Wild West, and the music, like the game itself, brick by brick recreates Selondia from oblivion.
Even without sound, the game does not lose its charm. The screen remains bright, as if revived, picture, as if 16-bit classic Japanese RPGs of the 90s were revived with a stroke of a digital brush, turning into luxurious HD landscapes. It is easy to get lost in these worlds – in smoky swamps, gloomy mines, city fragments, icy wastelands and tropical islands. And all this – in an isometric view, which makes you forget about polygons and not take your eyes off the whole way, even for ten hours straight.

How Buildings and Upgrades Work in Bastion
What is Bastion when the Lad finally collects all the cores and builds six of its buildings? It’s not just about the appearance – each building changes the very essence of the gameplay, adding new opportunities and heating up the interest. In the arsenal, you can choose any two types of weapons, assigning them to the left and right mouse buttons, and season everything with a powerful super move. And the choice here is generous – Bastion throws new toys until the very end, be it a combat machete, an old bow or a pair of cowboy revolvers.
Blue fragments that fall out of monsters and junk are not just trash, but the local currency. It can be spent in the forgotten things shop on useful purchases or in the forge to improve weapons. True, for upgrades you also need rare materials, unique to each “barrel”, so sometimes you have to hunt.
The Memorial throws funny challenges at the player, such as hitting a target with 12 bullets without missing. Perseverance is generously rewarded with a hefty increase in your wallet. The Distillery offers magical drinks: one will increase your health, another will increase your chance of a critical hit, and the third will save you from a fatal hit. But there is a nuance – there are only ten potion slots, and they open as you level up, so it is useful to look into the strange Who-Knows-Where levels to gain experience and fight waves of enemies.

The Altar is for those who find the fights too easy. Activate one or more local deities, and the enemies will become faster, stronger, and… deadly explosive. Opponents who previously seemed harmless will suddenly start showing their teeth. But the reward for victory – increased experience and crystals – is worth it.
And if you want to take a break from serious battles, you can test yourself in mini-arcades for weapon mastery: smash a hundred objects with a hammer, knock down all the targets with a bow or repel enemy attacks with a shield, without missing a single one. It’s easy to get a bronze award, but silver and gold will require skill… and a couple of upgrades.
What awaits the player in Bastion besides the plot
The developers of Bastion — only seven people — did not even think about releasing DLC. The release included everything they had originally planned. Now the team only carefully fixes minor bugs and adds nice little things like support for non-standard screen resolutions.
Even without add-ons, the game is generous with surprises. One of the gameplay elements that any other studio would probably have used from the first minutes appears only closer to the end. The plot, the ending of which seems obvious, suddenly gives the player the right to choose. The lyrical, almost dreamy song accompanying the events gradually reveals its fighting character, and by the end it turns into a piercing and memorable final track.

And yet this is not enough — you want more. Even the “New Game Plus” mode with a full set of deities and potions is not able to quench the thirst for a sequel. You dream of additional features, such as:
-
a random map generator,
-
a system for obtaining rare items,
-
pumping up a hero with many parameters,
-
an abundance of additional quests.
But then it would be a completely different game. Bastion is, first and foremost, a complete, beautiful story with a clear introduction, a tense climax, and a worthy ending. As the gray-haired Narrator would say: “A proper story.”
