Their artificial intelligence is not inferior to the enemies, and therefore battles often turn into spectacular mini-spectacles. If you want, you can replay individual skirmishes, trying new tactics to save as many comrades as possible. But here lies the main drawback of the game: keeping your squad in line is not an easy task. Sometimes the fighters get stuck, refuse to go further, or run into an invisible line that they will not cross. Sometimes it is impossible to understand what exactly the problem is, and because of this, precious time is lost. This is annoying, because in all other respects Opposing Force is almost flawless and leaves behind exactly the feeling for which we once fell in love with the original Half-Life.

All the features and gameplay of Opposing Force

Opposing Force adds nine completely new, in their own way, deadly types of weapons to your arsenal. Here you will find everything: familiar guns, strange experimental devices and mysterious alien artifacts. Each of them has its own features, and almost always they are really useful. The improved grappling hook deserves special mention – it often helps out both in dynamic shootouts and in solving tricky puzzles. And the alternative shooting mode of one of the experimental samples even sends you to a small section of the alien world of Xen, where you can replenish your health and ammo right in the middle of the battle.

Although Opposing Force does not have unique multiplayer modes, the package includes a set of maps for the network game, created by the “star” team of Gearbox mappers. Among them are such masters as Tom “Paradox” Mustaine and Levelord. It is not surprising that the maps turned out to be at least solid. Many new types of weapons and characters are also available in multiplayer, but still the main value of the add-on is the single-player campaign, which remains a bright and self-sufficient adventure.

Yes, Opposing Force doesn’t make a step up from the original in terms of graphics and technology, but it makes up for it with creative design.
