The Sniper: Ghost Warrior series from the Polish studio CI Games has always managed to impress with beautiful views and detailed simulation of the sniper craft, but it has always lacked something to truly open up. Even the third part, which sent players into the open world, received its share of criticism. However, Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts, although it did not become the embodiment of all the hidden potential of the franchise, still noticeably brought it closer to this goal and made a confident step forward

The game’s main advantage is not the quantity, but the quality of the missions. Wherever they unfold and whoever you have to eliminate, each of them feels rich and truly exciting. There is no extended open world like in the third part, but only five full-fledged missions and a training level. At first glance – a step back? In fact, it is a huge plus. The absence of meaningless runs through the “sandbox” and the careful development of each location only enhance the impression of Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts.
In addition to the main goal, there is always something else to do: plant explosives on an icebreaker, intercept secret data, destroy documents on cruel experiments, reveal evidence that children died in them, disable a train with missiles intended for provocative attacks on peaceful cities. There are also special orders – eliminate a specific officer, eliminate a group of soldiers, and also pass tests like “Interrogate three enemies”, “Kill five with one explosion” or “Complete all contracts in 25 minutes”.

The map of each mission is literally dotted with significant points. The locations are large enough to have room for fast travel points (which, however, are unavailable if the alarm is raised). And at the same time, the density of events and interest in exploration are much higher here than in the open world of the previous part.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts Leveling and Upgrade System
Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts has a fully-fledged and well-thought-out character development system. It is divided into four key categories – mask, suit, gadgets and support. Each of them has three branches of improvements, and although not all upgrades are equally useful, there are enough really useful ones among them. Particularly valuable are upgrades that enhance armor, modernization of the drone, which can not only conduct reconnaissance, but also hack electronics, as well as mask upgrades with the ability to mark enemies and highlight important objects – from shelters and fuel tanks on transport to mines.

To open and upgrade these skills, you need not only money, but also different types of tokens. The same resources are spent on buying weapons and installing modules – sights, silencers, magazines, underbarrel grenade launchers and various ammunition. All this costs a lot, and the flagship sniper rifle STURM Precision fully justifies the investment. But you shouldn’t forget about secondary weapons either – even on the average difficulty level, you can get seriously damaged if you’re not prepared for battle. Plus, to unlock the most powerful skills, you’ll have to earn stars by completing special challenges – without them, access to top skills will simply be closed.
That’s why in Contracts there are almost no situations like in the third part of the series, when money quickly lost its value, and additional missions or challenges were of no interest. Here, especially on the average difficulty level or in the “Liquidator” mode, each task and each bonus contract become important and truly motivate you to act.
Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts Tactics and Strategy
Yes, of course, no one forbids you to forget about most gadgets and skills, pumping up only armor and weapons. You can try to go straight ahead: lie down in a comfortable position and methodically shoot enemies one after another. Moreover, the shooting here is noticeably more pleasant than in the third part. You have to take into account the wind and distance, but the ballistics have become more honest, and the annoying red dot in the sight has disappeared. It’s just a pity that I still haven’t found how to turn off the bullet trajectory hint taking into account the wind in the “Standard” and “Liquidator” modes – it would be much more atmospheric.
But it’s better not to build illusions: even if you act quietly, with a silencer on your rifle, sooner or later you will be discovered. Then the alarm will rise, and enemies will literally materialize – not only out of thin air, but also from nearby shelters. Regular fighters with machine guns will start hitting at long distances, and along with them, snipers and enemy mercenaries under AI control will appear, carrying out the same contracts and willingly interfering with you. Yes, there are enough frankly unfair moments here (especially on the “Liquidator”), but in such a matter there is no impunity. Therefore, even in a forceful style, it is useful to use gadgets – for example, leave signal devices or install a sniper turret for cover. But it is much more effective to move carefully, use all the opportunities that the game offers, and look for bypass routes. There are really many paths to the targets here, which adds both non-linearity and replayability.

Let’s take an example. There is a target – a scientist with a double. You can climb higher, notice them both on the helipad and send two “hares” and half of the guards with one shot at the helicopter’s missiles. However, in this case, you will be quickly identified, chaos will begin, and most importantly, you will fail the two-star test, because the conditions require that only a real scientist be eliminated. It would be better to first obtain the documents that indicate which of them is the original and which is a copy. To do this, you can go down the rope directly into the complex or go around below, sneaking along the towers, eliminating the guards one by one, hiding in containers, and at the same time turning off the cameras with a drone.
By the way, the equipment here is turned off at a distance – it is enough to use special ammunition for a sniper rifle. There are heavy rounds (not affected by wind), explosive, armor-piercing, electromagnetic and even marks. Armor-piercing ones are ideal for dealing with turrets, and EMP ammunition instantly disables them. Thanks to this, the sniper game in Contracts feels much more diverse and flexible.
Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts – Is the New Part of the Series Worth Playing?
The problems of the new Ghost Warrior, as in the previous parts, are mainly in the technical side. Yes, the picture has become noticeably more pleasant for the eyes, but the optimization is lame – there are twitches, freezes and unexpected crashes. Sometimes the main character gets stuck in the textures at the most inopportune moment, as if he has grown to them. The artificial intelligence has become smarter than before, and generally behaves decently, but from time to time it still shows strange behavior – for example, it may not notice that a partner’s corpse is lying a meter away from it. And “sniper” bursts from a machine gun from a distance of 150 meters are already completely unfair. Sometimes the scripts fail. Shots do not always sound convincing, and the heads of enemies fly apart into pieces when hit, so that it looks more like a tropical fruit on the counter. The evacuation points are not ideally implemented either. And so on down the list.

However, all this, I want to believe, will be fixed with patches. In the meantime, one thing can be said – Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts remains the best modern game about snipers and, without a doubt, the most successful part of the series. And at the end of December, it can become even better, because the developers promise to add multiplayer.
