The car park has everything you could dream of: signature Hot Wheels cars, iconic cars like the DeLorean from Back to the Future, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles van, the Batmobile, and even legends like the Ford Mustang GT.

But this is not just a race. Unleashed has a fully-fledged track editor with a live environment — almost any object can be used as part of the track. You will also have your own room, which gradually fills with prizes and trophies — and, by the way, you can also ride in it. In addition to the single-player mode, the developers have also added multiplayer: you can fight two on one screen or arrange a large-scale race for 12 people online.

For some, the mention of this company will bring to mind the unsuccessful experiment with the HyperScan console. But most will be more interested in something else – we are talking about a racing game based on the legendary line of Hot Wheels toys.

The miniature cars first appeared in 1968, but they only gained real mass popularity in the CIS countries in the 90s. The shelves were full of fakes and nameless copies from Chinese factories, but licensed Hot Wheels were a rarity – and even more valuable.

Fans of the Forza Horizon series probably remember that similar toy cars have already appeared as DLC. Each vehicle in the game has five basic characteristics, which gives the races a certain depth. But at the same time, the controls remain simple and clear, especially at low difficulty levels. Even if you are far from being a veteran of arcade racing, you can get the hang of it in just a couple of minutes – the game feels great on both the standard Joy-Con and the Pro controller. Depending on the car, the accelerators also vary: some turn on more abruptly, others are a little more inert – adding to the feeling that each car has its own character.

But the tracks leave the most vivid impression. There are not just many of them – they are truly diverse and thought out. There is no feeling that you are driving in circles along the same routes. Even after several days of active play, completely new locations periodically appear, where every turn is a surprise. Somewhere the track winds through toys scattered on the floor, somewhere – through a labyrinth of books, mugs and other “home” exotics.

Comparisons with “Microcars” are obvious. The visual style and overall atmosphere seem to take you back to your childhood, when you laid out tracks yourself from everything that came to hand – from saucepans to shoe boxes. It seems that everything that happens in the game was invented and built by a small child who was left alone at home for a while.

It is especially pleasing that you can share the fun. There is a full-fledged Split Screen – you can arrange a race on one screen with a friend or family member. And if you want a real challenge, online multiplayer for 12 people is at your service. Finding matches takes a little time, but it works stably. The question of the availability of crossplay remains open – in the current version of the game, it is clearly not advertised.

The original obstacles on the tracks add additional charm to the races. The game constantly throws up unexpected challenges that require quick reactions and ingenuity. Here are just a few examples of what you will have to face:

• a giant spider whose web slows down the movement of cars;
• sticky puddles that are easy to get stuck in;
• moving objects that knock you off course;
• toy planes or drones flying past;
• suddenly opening doors and sliding boxes.

These elements not only add fun, but also make you constantly be on your guard – after all, no race will be like the previous one. All this makes the gameplay truly alive and exciting.
