Four great nations meet on the battlefield: Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Germans and Slavs. Their conflicts unfold against the backdrop of villages, dense forests and gloomy monasteries of medieval Europe – exactly where the art of war was simple but brutal.
It becomes clear from the very beginning: this game is made with an emphasis on multiplayer. But despite the network focus, the developers from Destructive Creations also took care of the single-player campaign. Although it is not as long as in classic RTS, it is still gripping. Each campaign has only five missions, but they are presented as historical mini-dramas. First, you lead a squad of Vikings to capture a rich abbey – to rob, burn, smash. Then you are transported to Edward the Confessor’s England, where a civil war with the ambitious vassal Godwin is coming. And finally, you find yourself among the Eastern European tribes that Prince Rurik is trying to unite.
Historical accuracy? Let’s be honest – the plot here is more inspired by real events than based on them. Everything is subordinated to the gameplay. If you’ve played Dawn of War, you’ll have a rough idea of what to expect — but Ancestors goes its own way. There are no tanks, no guns, no armor penetration calculations. No trucks or supply chains, no engineering vehicles. Everything is much more “earthly”: just people, weapons in hand, and blood on the grass. The battle is not about damage in numbers, but about every movement of the sword.
Each squad in the game has a health bar divided into tiny fragments, one for each fighter. And these are not just numbers: each of these segments changes color depending on the wounds received. Green – the fighter is intact. Yellow – wounded. Red – almost dead. This allows you to understand at a glance who is holding on and who is about to fall. But more importantly, you only hurt the enemy if you physically hit him. There is no “hit / miss” in the abstract sense. Here you must see how the sword falls on flesh. If the blow is blocked or misses – no damage. Imagine a classic scene: two squads meet in battle. One soldier raises an axe, the second – a spear. A real duel begins. Are you aiming archers at an enemy squad that has clashed with your swordsmen? Expect trouble. Arrows do not distinguish between an ally and an enemy – everyone is under fire, without exception. Especially if the archers hit point-blank: in this case, the enemy may not even receive damage at all, but your people are guaranteed to fall first. The game does not forgive carelessness. Everything needs to be calculated: the trajectory, the moment of the shot, and the angle. Sometimes you have to move the shooters forward, behind the enemies, to give them a chance to shoot in a clear line without risking their allies. This is, of course, a risk – but often justified.

Ancestors teaches: don’t lead everyone into an attack in a crowd. Don’t hope that “the more people per one, the better.” It works exactly the opposite. If you throw three of your own at an enemy squad, they will simply get stuck: they interfere with each other, waste time on reorganization, and as a result, they work ineffectively. It is better to have one, but competently managed squad, than a useless crowd.
To make archers a truly formidable weapon, you need to master the art of control: when to give the command to shoot, when to turn it off, who to aim at manually, and when to trust the automation. You have to always be on the alert: monitor the situation, consider the angles, wait for the perfect moment. And always remember: one mistake – and you will lose them forever.
In Ancestors, the squad is not immortal. Each dead fighter is a real loss, and if you do not have time to withdraw the squad, it can be cut out completely. Therefore, the “retreat” button here is not a whim, but a tool for survival. Only with its help can you pull soldiers out of the meat grinder of close combat and save at least part of the squad. They can be replenished at the base – but treatment is also possible in the field. You just have to stop, make a rest – and the fighters themselves will begin to come to their senses. Without tents, without fires – just lie down on the grass and catch your breath.
Using Terrain and Traps to Win Battles in Ancestors
In Ancestors, relying on the landscape and environment as a full-fledged strategic tool is no longer as easy as we would like. There are no usual shelters or terrain that would give a tactical advantage. Forget about trenches, ditches or fortified positions – all this is absent. Even the difference in the type of soil does not affect the behavior of units. Only tall grass gives a small tactical advantage: it can hide your soldiers from the enemy’s eyes, and even shots from cover do not give away their location. But this solution does not work everywhere – grass does not grow in all areas of the map, and its usefulness is limited to quick micro-ambushes, and not full-fledged stealth gameplay. In such conditions, you have to think differently. All that remains is to choose smart points for defense and count on attentiveness. The most obvious example is a bridge. Narrow, easily controlled, critical for movement. An ambush on a bridge can become a deadly trap for the enemy. You can also use traps – dig a hole, fill it with stakes, spend resources on it… But in conditions of a shortage of wood, this solution is far from always justified. The developers took an interesting step – the bodies of fallen soldiers remain on the battlefield until the end. And when twenty minutes pass, and the player still holds an important pass, the heroes continue to stand, knee-deep in piles of corpses. This creates an almost documentary feeling of an exhausting battle – you feel not only the scale, but also the weight of each battle.

Particular attention should be paid to fire. When a fire starts in a village, it is not just an effect, it is a spectacle. Everything happens in stages: first the thatched roof catches fire, then the flames spread to the walls. The building literally crumbles before your eyes, section by section — only charred beams and flickering heat from within remain. It looks really lively, almost cinematic. However, if you look closely at the details, it becomes noticeable that the models and textures of the environment are not the strongest element of the game. Unreal Engine 4 copes well with the soldiers: their movements, combat animations, reactions — everything looks very convincing. But the surrounding world seems unfinished in places — the detailing of background objects leaves much to be desired.
Nevertheless, Ancestors takes the atmosphere and the plausibility of battles. This is not a game about superhuman abilities — it is a story about a dirty, protracted war, where every log, every piece of land and every corpse on the battlefield matter.
Why Villages Matter in Ancestors Legacy
One of the main advantages of Ancestors Legacy is its unique system of territory control, which has gone far beyond the banal capture points. Here, each control zone is not just a mark on the map, but a full-fledged village, with its own structure, logic and vulnerabilities. When you capture a point, it means that you take control of a real settlement. In the center, marked with the conventional letter “A”, live the peasants, there is also the main house – a kind of fortress, where the inhabitants hide at the first alarm. But the most interesting thing begins on the outskirts. All resources – be it grain, wood or iron – are located far beyond this center. Wheat fields are spread out behind the forest, sawmills are hidden on the edges, and mines are in the hills. In order to establish mining, you need to send peasants there. Pay them a small bribe – and here is a group of commoners, grabbing simple tools, trotting through the thicket along narrow paths to the place of work. Their path is not easy: slow, vulnerable, often deadly.
This arrangement of villages adds a layer of strategic depth to the game that many RTS lack. Holding only one central point is not enough. It is important to control the entire area: fields, mines, forests. Otherwise, your economy will burst at the seams. And even worse – the loss of peasants. One enemy strike, and your hard-working farmhand dies, and production stops. Sometimes you have to save the outskirts at the risk of the lives of troops, because if they are not protected – goodbye food, iron and the ability to hire new troops.

Even if you managed to clear everything clean, it is too early to relax: the enemy can come with a quick raid and burn out the outskirts. This is especially annoying for those who like to play defensively – it seems like you have foreseen everything, and then bam – and half of the resources are again under threat.
On the other hand, the same system works great in attack. No way to take the center of the village with a frontal attack? Then come from behind, kill the peaceful workers, burn the wheat fields or plunder the mine. This will not only undermine the enemy economy, but also slow down the replenishment of the army. Without food and resources, the morale in the enemy camp drops, and hiring new units becomes simply impossible. Thus, even with fewer fighters, you can gain the upper hand strategically.
And the visual implementation of the villages is simply pleasing to the eye. Everything is thought out to the smallest detail: between the huts – trampled paths, in the corners – carts, wooden fences, stalls, fires with benches around. It seems that a tired peasant with a mug of beer is about to come out, sit by the fire and start grumbling about life. These details create a feeling of real life – not just a military map, but a living world for which you really want to fight.

Despite the fact that the project does not shine with modern technologies and sometimes feels a bit “yesterday”, it surprises with a mature approach to game design. This is not another gray RTS, but a game with character, in which you can feel respect for the player and love for detail.
The gameplay is centered on the struggle for control over regions. And it’s not just about capturing points for the sake of it: you manage entire areas where peasants live and work. These unarmed workers extract timber, collect wheat and become a vital part of your economy. The loss of such an area is not just a strategic omission, it is a blow to your entire army. The game constantly forces you to keep macro- and micromanagement in your head at the same time.
But Ancestors Legacy is not about massive armies and giant battles. Everything here is intimate, even homely: the maps are small, the squads are modest in number. However, this is what makes each battle intense and tense. You monitor the location of the squads, their health, activate skills manually, take into account the damage to your own when attacking, and are constantly forced to adapt to the situation. This is not a strategy about construction and slow resource gathering, this is a game about instant decisions and competent positioning.

However, at some point you begin to notice the boundaries. The game, alas, is compact not only in scale, but also in content. The choice of units is limited – there are only a few types, and they differ from each other quite slightly. Construction is practically absent: you can only build a few defensive structures like towers, which are easily destroyed. Base development as such is absent. After about 4-5 hours, you come to the understanding: in front of you is not brilliant minimalism, but rather just an unfinished framework that seems deeper than it actually is.
Nevertheless, the game has one undeniable advantage – honesty. Every battle, every shot, every hit is shown with due attention. There is no feeling that everything is decided by one line of code. If a soldier falls in battle, his body will remain in place until the end of the match. All actions are visually supported: misses, hits, blocks – everything is felt and perceived. And this creates a special atmosphere of “handwork”, when the strategy becomes something more than a set of mechanics.
Visually and atmospherically, Ancestors Legacy does not disappoint either. The medieval setting is made with love for detail: villages live their own lives, traces of battle remain on the fields, rain and mud affect immersion, and the music and voice acting enhance the overall feeling of participation in a real conflict.
