The same familiar scene that captivates the weary souls who are exhausted by the endless gray skies, stained sidewalks, and wild passengers in cramped city vans, along with the smoky chimneys of factories amid the chaotic urban landscape. It remains a paradise with a languid sun, warm waters, and air shimmering from the relentless heat of the day. Everything stays unchanged: the lilac hues of the setting sky, deep blue waves of a calm ocean, and plump seagulls gliding gracefully above a frothy orange shore. A straw hat rests on the bald head of a guerrilla, who seems lost in thought, while three makeshift tables sit under the leafy shelter of swaying palms. A young man enjoys his pumpkin porridge, his unbuttoned shirt revealing a hairy chest, embodying the carefree spirit of the moment. Nearby, the fierce cries of Aunt Aleida rise above the sounds of laughter, as she passionately argues with tipsy Uncle Camilo, creating a vibrant tapestry of life that feels both chaotic and beautiful. For the fourth or fifth time, the author of these lines eagerly immerses themselves in the Tropico series, and yet again, a delightful sensation rises up from deep within, reminiscent of the feeling after downing a refreshing cocktail made with mate and tequila. This drink is beautifully served in a hollowed-out coconut, complete with a straw and an exquisite pineapple canapé. Yo-ho-ho and a bottle…? However, this time, there’s quite clearly an overwhelming amount of rum mixed in.

By the way, that impressive ship on the left is a majestic battle galleon, fully prepared and ready to embark on an adventurous journey.
After a whirlwind of changes in the creative team and a formal publisher switch, everything in Tropico has undergone a complete transformation. The only elements that remain familiar are the time-tested engine from Railroad Tycoon 2, which has endured three long years without any updates, and perhaps some of the delightful features previously mentioned. The chewed cigar, the bottle of Campari, and the ebonite fan are now mere echoes of a bygone era, fading into memory as we move forward.

Now, Tropico has shifted from being just a strategy game focused on a banana dictator to a genuine simulator of the challenging and often chaotic everyday life of a typical Caribbean pirate baron. Yes, that’s right—the kind of character who embodies the essence of adventure, complete with grog, flamboyant epaulettes, an eye patch, and a trained parrot perched on his shoulder. Just as in Tropico, our political journey will begin with character creation, allowing us to craft a persona that reflects our personal ambitions and navigates the current political landscape. This journey promises to be as engaging as it is unpredictable, filled with opportunities for mischief and intrigue. It’s essential to recall that we are in the enlightened 17th century, where pirates resemble a quasi-official maritime society—an organization that operates under the cover of legitimate privateering licenses issued by English, Spanish, or, at the very least, French crowns. The plan unfolds as it always has: establishing a thriving settlement, developing necessary infrastructure, producing various goods, and then—plunder, theft, and even more plundering! This time, however, the experience extends beyond mere “free building” or a series of disconnected missions—though both elements still remain in play. Every self-respecting pirate king can embark on a complete campaign composed of a sequence of fifteen intricate challenges, each designed to test their cunning, strategy, and audacity.
Indeed, ten of these represent a kind of independent training adventure, allowing players to dive deep into captivating “pirate” escapades while mastering the intricate nuances of island economies. The remaining five are clearly linked by a cohesive story, set within a specific timeframe from the early 17th century to the mid-18th century, perfectly aligning with the height of Caribbean piracy. Imagine a vibrant cultural and entertainment center: a lively tavern on one side, a bustling brewery on the other, and a charming building with whimsical towers—yes, it’s a brothel. Throughout this fascinating era, you’ll navigate from one barren isle to another, creating thriving colonies on each, all managed from a central hub that skillfully orchestrates their activities. You will face challenges and opportunities as you build your empire, making strategic decisions that impact your growing network of islands.

Throughout your building journey, you’ll frequently encounter legendary figures like the infamous Henry Morgan or the daring Red John. With a touch of diplomatic finesse, you might even manage to lure these celebrated pirates to rally under your black flag. The challenging yet thrilling life of a humble buccaneer is at the heart of Pirate Cove. Much like the original Tropico, this game aspires to earn the prestigious title of an intricate social simulator, but it does so with its own unique flair. Instead of the monotonous “eat-sleep-have fun” routine promoted by the eerie Tamagotchi of The Sims, it embraces a more adventurous and dynamic approach. After all, every genuine pirate dreams of filling their belly, which is why the lively coastline is bustling with a variety of eateries, vibrant bars, and enticing food carts ready to serve up delicious snacks. You’ll find a colorful array of options that keep your crew satisfied and ready for their next escapade on the high seas.
Naturally, captains and officers are unlikely to be satisfied with just any establishment. It’s essential to have a luxurious restaurant featuring a skilled chef from the Old World, serving fresh oysters and genuine grape wine rather than the usual sour grog that everyone dreads. Speaking of sourness, the need for periodic libations is also quite significant in the adventurous life of a pirate. In fact, the affordability and availability of fine spirits play a crucial role in their daily lives. A sober pirate is an angry pirate, and you’ll quickly understand this if you attempt to impose a tax on the free sale of alcohol. Furthermore, there’s the unreciprocated love of corsairs for all sorts of glittering treasures, vibrant fabrics, and shiny trinkets that catch their eye. This obsession adds excitement and a sense of purpose to their daring escapades on the high seas. Without a golden hoop in his ear and a flashy peacock feather in his trophy hat, few bold adventurers would willingly set sail into the open sea. Such trendsetters, indeed! Beyond the various outlets for selling their ill-gotten gains, the list of establishments also includes an array of gambling dens. Here, one can recklessly squander their hard-earned spoils on dice games or engage in spirited contests of skill and luck. Enslaved captives toil under the hot sun on the plantations, while the one who dares to refuse work dangles precariously from the yardarm, facing the perilous entertainment of knife-throwing. Lastly, among the essential needs of these notorious pirates are certain… ahem… “wenches,” which translates literally to “ladies of ill repute.” Such choices reveal much about their lifestyle. Draw your own conclusions from that, if you will.

It is worth remembering that the early parts of this game series did not receive the most flattering reviews – at most the infamous “Teen” rating. What an ironic story! Fortunately, now we do not have to exhaust ourselves with the most boring chores: building island infrastructure, processing loans, collecting taxes, introducing export duties or, God forbid, entertaining capricious, plump and sunny tourists. Forget about ridiculous souvenir shops, dirty pools and dull beaches – you no longer need to indulge their whimsical desires. Now we are in for a real pirate life! Among all the possible economic scenarios, the creators of Pirate Cove chose the brightest and most exciting – robberies in the vastness of the ocean. This is pleasantly refreshing: you can fully immerse yourself in the spirit of adventure, without being distracted by the dull routine of business management. All that’s required of you is to impose a toll on every pirate vessel that docks in the harbor, or (who knows?) even gather your own crew of swashbucklers. However, no venture—especially one as ruthless and daring as this—can truly succeed without adequate training for those involved. Yes, before launching daring raids against sloops, frigates, and galleons, our bearded comrades would greatly benefit from enrolling in specialized pirate skill enhancement courses. After all, the artisans of blade and axe are divided by their specific trades and levels of mastery in various piratical skills, ensuring that each member of the crew is well-prepared for the challenges ahead. This preparation can make all the difference on the high seas.
Engaging in a fierce brawl during a boarding action, mastering the art of cannon fire and promptly delivering gunpowder, honing navigation expertise, and swiftly rigging extra sails, along with skillfully wielding blades and muskets, and grappling in hand-to-hand combat—this is just the beginning of a grand adventure. Once the diverse crew is assembled, the focus shifts to constructing and outfitting the majestic vessel: heavy cannons, intricate rigging, sturdy masts, reinforced hull plating, primary and backup sails, a resilient keel designed to withstand the fiercest storms… Ultimately, after boarding the graceful schooner and securing the beautifully crafted daggers gifted by the governor, the valiant crew embarks on an extensive journey across the unpredictable seas, poised to unexpectedly reappear in port months later, unloading chests brimming with piastres, doubloons, and guilders… or perhaps to vanish forever, swallowed by the vast and mysterious depths of the ocean.

The brewery that produces the local universal currency—barley beer—raises a complex and contentious issue: in reality, you will find that your only means of earning a living will be through the constant outfitting of bandit expeditions. Even the few individuals who work tirelessly in the shipyards, forges, and arms and casting workshops aren’t genuinely considered workers… They aren’t really laboring in the traditional sense; rather, they are true victims of pirate captivity, having been seized from peaceful vessels and forcibly brought to the island, shackled for future resale. Their plight highlights the grim reality of survival in this lawless environment, where dignity is stripped away.
Of course, any unfortunate person doomed to a miserable existence under the yoke of a cunning corsair lives with one dream – to break free. And if you do not take care of hiring professional overseers, do not train a pack of vicious dogs, and for greater clarity do not surround the area with gallows, shackle pits and gloomy dungeons – do not be surprised if you soon face not just a wave of escapes, but a full-fledged uprising. Do you get the gist? We are not talking about a riot, but about something much more piquant – about a conscientiously recreated simulator of the slave trade! Moreover, allow me to record in the annals: this was done by the same craftsmen who not long ago offered us paid access to yachts, movie screenings under palm trees and mineral water from beach fountains. Truly, the paths of the gaming industry and its strict prophet, the ESRB organization, are mysterious… Let me conclude with a short sermon “in honor of the outcasts.” Computer games have long since crossed that invisible line that polite society calls by the dry term “political correctness” — and you know what? It’s amazing, damn it! Tell me, is there anything more gratifying in life than returning in the evening from a hated job to the arms of a grumpy wife, to sniffling children and a dull plate of sour borscht, sending everything to hell, turning on the computer and plunging headlong into the enchanting, exciting, completely safe (since it’s virtual!) extermination of pixel dummies fussing under the mouse cursor? Hardly. For this spark of freedom alone, it’s worth waiting for the release of Pirate Cove.
P.S. The ESRB is a ratings board that assigns age ratings to games, ranging from “teen” to “mature,” based on violence, sexual content, and other sensitive content.
