Without alchemy in Gothic 1 Remake, surviving the final chapters is practically impossible—the harsh magic system and vicious enemies will quickly deplete your health and mana reserves. Mastering this craft is crucial for any build, and for future Fire Mages, learning potion-making is a mandatory story requirement. Below, we’ll discuss how to master this art, where to find instructors, and how to effectively obtain recipes in the remake.

Where and how to learn alchemy in Gothic 1 Remake?
Alchemy unlocks the ability to create powerful elixirs from common herbs and laboratory flasks. However, you won’t be able to sit down at a workbench right at the beginning of the game—training will only unlock in Chapter 3, strictly after clearing the Old Mine during the “Miners’ Nest” quest.
Two main instructors will help you master the profession, depending on your chosen faction:
-
Cor Kalom. The Elixir Master in the Swamp Camp. If you’ve decided to join the Brotherhood, head straight to his alchemy lab. The price is standard: 10 Skill Points (SP) and 100 ore.
-
Damarok. He resides in the Old Camp, or more precisely, in the local Chapel of Innos, where the supreme Fire Mages gather. He will only begin training a mercenary or guard in Chapter 3, and only after you’ve spoken with Master Corristo. The requirements are the same: prepare 10 SP and 100 ore.
Once you’ve acquired the coveted skill, you can immediately approach any alchemy table. On PC, simply press the interaction key (E) to start crafting. If you have the necessary ingredients and the correct formula, the Nameless One will brew a jar without a problem.

Where can I get new recipes and how do I farm ingredients?
The starting set of formulas is quite meager. To expand your alchemical arsenal, you’ll need to visit magical goods merchants—it’s best to purchase new recipe scrolls from Kronos or Torrez. The logic is simple: the more powerful and useful the elixir, the more expensive its formula will be, and the rarer the plants required for brewing.
Resource management in Gothic 1 Remake is significantly simpler than in the original from Piranha Bytes. The developers of the remake have significantly toned down the hardcore elements:
-
Inventory refresh. Local merchants completely replenish their stocks of laboratory flasks and basic herbs every three days.
-
Plant respawns. Grass in Minenthal now gradually regrows after a few days of collection.
This approach gives players complete freedom of action. There’s no longer a need to save every root—alchemy has become an accessible and renewable source of a permanent buff.
The Main Mistakes Beginners Make When Learning Alchemy
Alchemy punishes fussiness far more harshly than blacksmithing or hunting. There’s simply no way to reset stats in the game—every training point invested will stay with you until the credits roll. Minenthal’s scarce flora also doesn’t forgive a halabroad attitude: a thoughtlessly plucked root will be useless in the final chapters.
We’ve compiled a list of the Nameless One’s most critical mistakes at the start, which can completely ruin a build.
Survival Checklist: How to Avoid Wasting Resources in Gothic 1 Remake
-
Early Use of Permanent Elixirs. Brewed a potion for a permanent stat boost and drank it right away? Congratulations, you’ve ruined your leveling. The problem is that training with trainers increases in cost with each new threshold, so an early sip will artificially inflate the cost of leveling with mentors. The right way: first, squeeze the maximum out of regular trainers, leveling Strength, Dexterity, or Mana with SP, and save the accumulated potions for the endgame.
-
Selling and mindlessly eating rare herbs. Chewing raw Royal Sorrel for a penny-dollar immediate boost is a crime against efficiency. In the right potion, this herb will bring many times more benefits, and merchants will buy it for next to nothing. The right way: create a separate chest, throw all suspicious plants in it, and don’t touch them until you have the desired formula.
-
Blind faith that a skill will unlock all recipes. Learning a craft does not make you an absolute master. The Nameless One can only prepare 10 formulas on his own out of the approximately 25 existing in the game code. Legendary Orcish potions or powerful permanents for Strength and Dexterity are often only obtained through loot or purchased from rare vendors. Incidentally, the exact formulas for some top-tier potions have not yet been confirmed by the community, so don’t waste ingredients.
-
Choose your faction without regard to the alchemy tree. The deepest and most varied potion-making path is available exclusively in the Swamp Camp. The local Brotherhood, represented by Kor Kalom and Baal Kadar, will squeeze the most out of the mechanics, while the Old Camp will only provide a superficial foundation. Want to play a pure crafter? Choose your camp early, before the point of no return.
Endgame Traps: Golems, Elixirs, and Scarce Sorrel
Permanent elixirs of the highest order will pose a separate trap for the player. Brewing Elixir of Life to boost health or Elixir of Spirit to boost mana in the early chapters is physically impossible—they require specific drops from Golems. Therefore, wasting rare reagents on early experiments is pointless.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that the current guides for the first week of release often confuse the names of ingredients for the same recipes. Trying to brew, say, Royal Sorrel based on unverified online guides, is a sure way to end up with nothing (and without a valuable resource). Strict discipline when allocating training points and a reliable stash for storing rare herbs will save you more frustration than any attempt at random.
